Elfstedentocht 1954 - Reportage door de Friese smalfilmclub Kleare Kimen - uit de collectie van het Koninklijk Friesch Paarden-Stamboek (KFPS). Film in beheer van Fries Film Archief. De tiende Elfstedentocht werd verreden op 3 februari 1954. Winnaar was Jeen van de Berg in een recordtijd van 7 uur en 35 minuten. De ontknoping van de wedstrijd verliep chaotisch. Vlak voor de finish, bij de Noorderbrug in Leeuwarden, was het voor de kopgroep van vijf man niet duidelijk of er gekluund moest worden. Jeen van den Berg zag als eerste de loopbrug naar de wal. Zijn achtervolgers botsten op hem en aan de andere kant van de brug greep Anton Verhoeven Van den Berg bij zijn trui. In de chaos kwam kanshebber Jan Charisius ten val en was uitgeschakeld. Van den Berg en Verhoeven zagen in de verte bij de Prinsentuin een groot bord met 'Eindstreep' erop. Minder duidelijk was de vermelding 'nog 500 meter'. Toen de twee mannen langs het bord schaatsten, begonnen zij te juichen. De duizenden toeschouwers schreeuwden hen toe dat ze verder moesten. Jeen van den Berg herstelde zich als eerste en stoof op de finish af. Verhoeven, die al tussen het publiek stond en dacht dat hij had gewonnen, werd door Aad de Koning, Jan Charisius en Jeen Nauta gepasseerd en eindigde als vijfde.- published: 29 Jan 2014
