National Television Commercial created in Crazy Talk Animator Pro (1 of 3)
A few months ago I was lucky enough to get a chance to work on this project for a national television network in Canada. I created a 60, 30, and 15-second spot in under 40 hours using Crazy Talk Animator Pro. The final edit for the spots were done in a professional Avid suite. It was a fun project to work on, and I even provided the voice of the announcer. The big challenge in doing a project like this is making sure that it looks good on HD television. I've learned quite a few tricks along the way to achieve this type of quality. I even came up with a template that I use to make sure that the projects are SD and HD title safe. I can't wait to start working on my next project! June Issue 2012 Surfing Magazine Trailer
Foreword
BRUCE IRONS MEDITATES. Did you know that? Anytime he desires, he closes his lids and stares into his late brother’s eyes. I didn’t see that coming, not from Bruce. But I think that’s maybe the best thing I’ve heard all month. The best thing I’ve seen, well, that’s a toss-up between the girls of Stab, who we’re seriously considering including in next year’s Swimsuit issue, and SURFING photographer DJ Struntz’s Costa Rican score.
Babes. Waves. It was a good month. A month of reinvention.
This issue celebrates the zags in a world of zigs. During the magazine’s creation I was reading The Gang That Wouldn’t Write Straight, a book that details the New Journalism movement of the 1960s. New Journalism was a transformation led by a group of brazen writers and editors who tired of traditional, dry journalism and took to writing nonfiction like novels. Hunter S. Thompson. Tom Wolfe. Gay Talese. Guys we now consider legends because they changed the game. The movement was met with angry letters and uproar from conventional journalists who held tightly to their rigid story templates like the last sips of water in the Sahara. New Journalism was a paradigm shift. It was change. It was scary.
What you’ll find in this magazine isn’t so scary (unless you’re talking about Dorian’s Maverick’s barrel), but it’s change nonetheless. Fun change. A collection of articles, interviews, profiles and photos that celebrate approaching the things we’ve done for years in a new and exciting way. Like Costa Rica, for instance. A beaten path if there ever were one, DJ and crew put a new spin on it when they went to the Caribbean side and rediscovered waves that were comparable to Cloudbreak. Reward for risk, as it should be. Like Stab dolling up half the women’s World Tour and revealing them revealing almost all, and making us question our stereotypes of girl surfers. And like Chas Smith’s profile on Julian Wilson, who is hitting the reset button and changing his tour approach this year with a renewed sense of belonging. The angle that Chas took with the article — its setting and structure — is one that would make the New Journalists proud.
So much new. So much change. So much fun. —Taylor Paul
Inside this Issue
COSTA REDUX
You’ve been to Costa Rica. So has your cousin, the one with the soft top. And your yoga teacher. But have we all been missing something? A whole other coastline, perhaps? Despite rumors of crime and fickle waves, SURFING senior photog DJ Struntz, CJ Hobgood, Balaram Stack and Eric Geiselman venture to right-side waters. Guided by Jah and His local prophet, Gilbert Brown, the crew loots a local treasure.
JULIAN WILSON SAT BETWEEN TWO BLONDES
Chas Smith and a pair of ladies dine with Julian Wilson in San Francisco’s Chinatown. It is there that Julian talks of expectations, a tumultuous rookie year and his hope for the future. A future that, as Chas Smith graciously surmises, will be brighter than all the rest.
REINVENTING THE SURF GIRL
From girl next door to Aphrodite, no one does a makeover like Stab. Sam McIntosh and Derek Rielly lend us the goods on their swelteringly sexy fashion shoots. (We’re not giving them back.)
REINVENTING THE BIG-WAVE LINE
Shane Dorian, big-wave surfing’s Ferdinand Magellan, continues to brave new passages on stalwart craft. He discusses how he rides Maverick’s like the right at Pipe and we listen, intently.
REINVENTING THE SURFBOARD DIMENSION
It’s a measurement of liquid and the reason why you float. But why is it vacant from the stringer? Rusty Preisendorfer explains the lost dimension.
REINVENTING THE RIVALRY
Tired of “good sports” in competitive surfing? Samesies. Where are the rivalries of old? Here — according to Chas Smith, who says that Kolohe hates John John and John John hates Kolohe. So it is written, so it shall be.
LIGHTBOX
Among these images is one that photo editor Peter Taras says is one of the best photos taken all year. Can you guess which one?

Embedded UX - A Nerdery Interactive Primer
Matt: Welcome everybody to this month’s interactive primer. This month we are talking embedded UX. We’ll get to the definition of that in a little bit. Just to explain who we are, we’re The Nerdery, we are an interactive development shop that works with agencies and Fortune 1000 companies. We work with anybody, really. But what we do is, we’re kind of the backend developer to a lot of projects. You guys’ll come up with art and stuff like that and then we will take your idea and develop it for you. A few stats on us, and actually these are probably like 2 months out of date again but, it says we have 176 people working here I’m pretty sure it’s at like 196 or we might be over 200 within the next few days. Over 100 of those people are developers, so it’s like an army of developers here. We’ve worked on tons of projects. Right now it says 3600, I think it was 3800 when I checked it this morning, but, we’re doing tons of work and like I said that’s a 2 month difference so 25 people and an extra couple hundred projects in 2 months.
A little housekeeping on the presentation today: This webinar is broadcast only so we can talk to you but you cannot talk back to us. There will be a slide coming up on ways you can submit your questions. Other things, we are recording this right now. We have the video, we have slides, we have all this stuff, and expect that on our blog sometime in the next week. Let’s introduce our speakers today. First up is Mike.
Mike: Hi guys, this is Mike. I’m the Director of User Experience here at The Nerdery. I’ve built a 13 person UX team, 13th guy is starting in May. What’s up, Zack? We’ve been doing UX for about 3 years here at The Nerdery. A year and a half of that was just me. Demand has increased tremendously. In the last year we did 5500 hours of UX-only work, which is roughly 3.7 person years if you stack it end to end. If the direct sales team here meets their goals we’re expecting to double by the end the year. My co-presenter here is Nick Tietz.
Nick: Hi, I’m Nick. I’m the Senior User Experience Designer here at The Nerdery. I’ve been here for about 2 years, and we’re just kicking ass and taking names.
Matt: All right, so here’s the slide. If you guys have any questions there’s 3 ways you can send them in. Feel free to send them in, if they’re in the middle of talking about something and an idea pops into your head don’t feel worried that you’re going to interrupt them. I’m moderating them but you can send them using the questions panel in the GoToMeeting app, send them to us on Twitter @The_Nerdery or send us an email at primers@nerdery.com
Mike: All right, so let’s kick this off. Here at The Nerdery we have a concept we like to call Project DNA. We work with a lot of different types of clients. We’ve got the agency partners, which Matt touched on briefly, where we’re essentially the technical back side of the project and the designs come all baked from the agency and we just execute on them. We work with direct clients, big corporations, smaller companies that have ideas and strategies that they need executed and part of that is UX and design. So, we’re used to engaging in a variety of different scenarios. The way we like to look at it is all of our clients have something they can bring to the table. Whether they have a freelance designer they hired or they’ve already done all their market research or they want to use our research. We’re totally open to that, we don’t force our clients into a specific streamlined process. What we like to do is kind of identify what you guys bring to the table and fill in the gaps to create a complete project. That’s something we do on a lot of different projects and if there’s a conflict, if we work with an agency and “hey, we do user research and you do user research” that can all be figured out during the planning phase to figure out who does what. Just a quick “what is UX?” for those who are fairly new to it: UX is user experience and, as a field, it’s fairly new. I guess you could call it an emerging field. It’s been incubating for years under different guises. When people think of design they traditionally think of how something looks or how pretty something is but in UX we’re really more concerned with how something functions. We want things to work well, we want them to accomplish goals, so the simplest definition of UX that we’ve come up with is we want to take the goals of your users or your customers, we want to take the goals of your business, how you want to make money, and we want to align that with the application or the interface that we’re developing for you.
Nick: So, for example, you want to make it easier for your users to sign up, or find information, or register. Our goal is really to understand, using a user-centered design processes: What do your users need to do? What do you want them to do? What do they want to do? Then mak

Jumping through Hoops for IT Services - ITSM weekly the podcast EPISODE 88
Craig Wilkey joins the Hooper and Beran to talk all things IT Services. You just have to make it through the first 20 minutes of chris's antics.
ITSM Weekly The Podcast bringing you news, insight, analysis and information from the the world of IT Service Management. Your host, Matthew Cooper, Chris Dancy and Matt Beran. IT Service Management Weekly The Podcast starts now.
Welcome to ITSM Weekly The Podcast for the week ending April 27th. News gator, that open, that spirit, Frank Wilke.
Oh, you're gonna burst a bubble.
I don't think I've ever seen you turn that shirt to red dress.
We don't have any real news. Can we get a newspaper sound?
How about a news purr?
How about crickets?
Can we get crickets? And just to spite them, give us some news poodles. You do this in the other shows right? They all have those sounds.
Yes.
I guess before you guys get started, 'cause I can spend five minutes from you. Have you been watching the Twitter string?
A little bit.
Not today.
Of course not you have a tool that curates it for you why would you
pay attention.
Yeah.
It obviously wasn't important enough.
Never is.
I'm high profile.
Does Mrs. Hooper, call the phone?
She has to text.
I texted you and you didn't call me back for three hours.
Yeah, I got you in a different life mode.
Isn't that a phony? Yeah. Yeah. What life mode do you have being Dancy's puppet.
I don't know.
Okay.
I don't have a life mode.
So yeah. A couple interesting things. Stephen Mann has single handedly turned into the PR department for every conference ever given. I mean all he's doing is repeating stuff from vendors for a sits.
Yeah. The Forrester stuff that was coming out there was fantastic.
From out of what?
Out of. Not the SDITS or however you said it. The other one that they were at yesterday.
Wilkey, do you watch the stuff? Do you follow the Steven Mann?
I follow him but I haven't really been paying attention to the stream. I'm on vacation. I just look for mentions.
Dude I just realized it's 4.20 you got sunglasses on, you you're inside, what's up with that?
I wish, I got no contacts out here. Do you have any?
Contacts? No.
Don't ask Hooper if he's got marijuana while he's recording a podcast that's gonna be on the internet. Mrs. Hooper that's the strike number four. I think for her ever listening to the show.
Yeah. Well, actually, that wasn't a bad one 'cause I had no idea what he was talking about.
So that actually goes in my favor.
So, Hoop, I have to ask with that plunging neckline and the gorilla crawling out of your shirt. How does that work?
It's called being a man.
I wouldn't know much about that.
It's beautiful here. Actually, my short-sleeves which is almost never happens.
Ah, and you go to that gym. I see you check-in all that old. So yeah Steven Mann's tweets are kind of hot. He's really the analyst of analysts. The only thing is, did you guys see? You didn't, but here's this really cool app or application I saw today called OneDesk. And it takes engagement management, feedback, customer service, project development, support cast and social media monitoring and puts it in one tool.
What's it called again?
OneDesk. That being said it is the interface is junky looking, but you know you can skin anything, ask Michael Meyers.
Interface is continued, and we talked about this before, continued to be overrated. If it doesn't have the functionality and the power, everyone talks about, "Oh, it's gotta have this sexy UI.
It's gotta be delightful." Give me a break. If it doesn't scale and it doesn't work functionality I don't care how anything looks.
First off, Mrs. Hooper might scale, but she's damn sexy, so I know you can.
She's here for me.
Hey, when it comes to selling, you got to have both.
Yeah. Even when I think about Matt's wife, she's hot.
Oh yeah, quite.
Yeah you should see my wife. All right. So, back to what we were saying. So yeah, to the UI point, what's his name, who's the guy from New Zealand who's always complaining. The IT skeptic. I couldn't think of his name out, I just go ahead and type descriptors.
I love how everybody has a beer but me. See, he tweeted today that since he started the update on his site, it's made no difference in his bounce rate. So content is still king.
Well, yeah. I don't follow him on Twitter either so content is still king.
So again, I don't follow, I don't check out Skep’s site because I get everything to RSS feeds. I get all of the stuff plugged into me so I don't know what this new site looks like.
I think I will check it out.
I mean it's nice.
It is.
I mean I kind of wanted to tell them it made a difference to me because it's easier on the eyes.
Because you're shallow and superficial. And you only care about looks.
Oh burn.
Speaking of shallow and superficial I don't but because I'm getting ready to go to London I just have my nose waxed.
Oh yeah?
My face was my nasolabial has

7:25 minutes Todd Royal
9:51 minutes Barbara Monahan Burke
11:31 minutes Rita Villa
13:24 minutes Michael McCue
I feel much like Rita Villa, quite sad that people on both sides of the issue, that I know and respect, have reached such a tragic impasse.
The petitioners’ arguments are weak while many professed admiration verging on love of McCue.
I feel self importance, emotion and personality has dominated many on the boards thinking.
If, in fact, bad behavior on McCue’s part has been prevalent these past years, the board should
have censured him for those incidents. This could have led to a robust discussion of acceptable behavior and put McCue formally on warning. If in fact that was warranted.
An email was authored and sent by the Ben Neumann, SCNC President, to ALL board members PRECEEDING the board meeting. The email accused McCue of lying and misrepresenting the facts.
Clearly the intent of the email was to influence the board’s decision. Is that not condoned under the Brown Act? Is not the very purpose of the Act to disallow discussion of items on an agenda out of public view.
Since McCue is a candidate for reelection to remove a board member this close to the election smacks of retribution, character assassination or an attempt to influence the election.
Yes, i know, hard to reconcile with their professed admiration of him.
Frankly, SCNC needs a better procedure for what is the most extreme action a neighborhood council board might take – firing a board member, and overturning an election.
McCue if successful in the May election would be back in 5 weeks or so. What then, hmm? More fireworks or will Wednesday’s event prove to be a catharsis for both sides? Allowing the SCNC to get back to real business.
I certainly hope so. Yet McCue is certainly within his rights to challenge many aspects of SCNC Board’s procedures and decisions in this matter.

McCue’s Removal: The Epilog
August 18, 2010 by Paul Hatfield
A grievance committee headed by former Studio City Neighborhood Council member Jane Drucker released its findings regarding the removal of Michael McCue from the SCNC Board last April.
The point I and many others made in the weeks following the proceeding, including those who attended the removal hearing, was that there was no specificity in the removal petition. In other words SCNC acted spuriously.
The grievance committee concluded that the petition lacked specifics. The lack of detail made it impossible for McCue to prepare a defense going into the hearing.
In other words, he had to wing it. That’s not justice.
Ms. Drucker also warned the Board that removal actions affect stakeholders and must be weighed carefully. A neighborhood council “is not a private club” where members can be removed simply at the discretion of the board.
About twenty-five stakeholders attended the meeting, which was quiet and well-run - in sharp contrast to the removal hearing, which was poorly managed and raucous, including an inflammatory statement by a board member that punctuated the travesty that evening.
Although the grievance report contradicts the SCNC’s decision, nothing can undo the train wreck the board created.
But there is still time to make amends. The eight members who voted for removal (including one who was defeated in the last election) should do the right thing and issue a public apology to the stakeholders and Mr. McCue (who reclaimed his seat in the election).
As I stated before, no neighborhood council is prepared to deal with a removal, much less one lacking basis.
Of even greater concern was the role played by the City Attorney’s Office. SCNC should have been advised to step back and reconsider. Instead, it appears the council was given a green light - perhaps a dim green light, but it still amounted to tacit support.
The grievance committee deserves the thanks of the stakeholders for not only finding against the council’s deeply flawed process, but, more importantly, for recommending by-law changes to prevent a reoccurrence.
There was a little turnover on the SCNC as a result of the election. Perhaps more sensible views will prevail going forward. Let’s hope so.
