Voices from the Grave - The Troubles (Full Documentary)
Award Winning Documentary. Some consider it the Best Documentary of the Troubles. The story of the Northern Ireland Troubles through the unflinching testimony of two men who played key roles on opposite sides of that bloody conflict. Nearly ten years ago the two paramilitary leaders told their stories on condition that they could never be revealed while they were still alive. The stories told by the Irish Republican Army's (IRA) Brendan Hughes and Ulster Volunteer Force's (UVF) David Ervine tell us of the motivations of the participants, the planning of campaigns of violence, the misery of a hunger strike, the tracking and killing of informers and the duplicity that ended a conflict that had lasted too long. It is also a narrative of the fate of combatants when their wars are over. BBC Documentary RTE Documentary- published: 28 Nov 2013

Worst Massacre of the Troubles: UVF Bar Bombing (BBC Documentary)
The Mcgurk's Bar Bombing - BBC Spotlight Hard-hitting investigations on the major stories affecting life in Northern Ireland. Julian O'Neill investigates the continuing fallout from the 1971 attack which was initially blamed on the victims. On 4 December 1971, the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), a loyalist paramilitary group, exploded a bomb at McGurk's Bar in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The pub was frequented by members of the Irish Catholic and nationalist community.[1] The explosion caused the building to collapse, killing fifteen Catholic civilians and wounding seventeen more. It was the highest death toll from a single incident in Belfast during the Troubles.[2] Despite evidence to the contrary, the security forces publicised the theory that a bomb had accidentally exploded while being handled by IRA members inside the pub; inferring that the victims themselves were partly to blame. A report later found that the police were biased in favour of this view, and that this hindered their investigation. In 1977, UVF member Robert Campbell was sentenced to life imprisonment for his part in the bombing.- published: 27 Nov 2013

How Fr Alex Reid helped end the Troubles - 14 days - BBC Documentary
Irish History Documentary about the 14 worst days of the Troubles. The Troubles (Irish: Na Trioblóidí) is the common name for the ethno-nationalist[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] and sectarian[14] conflict in Northern Ireland that spilled over at various times into the Republic of Ireland, Scotland, England and mainland Europe. The Troubles began in the late 1960s and is considered by many to have ended with the Belfast "Good Friday" Agreement of 1998.[15][16][17][18][19] However, sporadic violence has continued since then.[16][20][21] The key issues at stake in the Troubles were the constitutional status of Northern Ireland and the relationship between its two main communities. Unionists and loyalists, who mostly come from the Protestant community, generally want Northern Ireland to remain within the United Kingdom. Irish nationalists and republicans, who mostly come from the Catholic community, generally want it to leave the United Kingdom and join a united Ireland. The former generally see themselves as British and the latter generally see themselves as Irish. The Troubles involved republican and loyalist paramilitaries, the state security forces of the United Kingdom and of the Republic of Ireland, and politicians and political activists. More than 3,500 people were killed in the conflict.- published: 22 Nov 2013

Northern Ireland and the Troubles
Northern Ireland and the Troubles
Between 1969 and 1998 the world watched in despair as Northern Ireland collapsed into a quagmire of political division, sectarianism and paramilitary violence. The Troubles, as it became euphemistically known, was a complex and seemingly irresolvable conflict between Irish Republicans, the British Army, local police and Ulster Loyalists. Three decades of assassinations, terrorism and retaliatory violence rocked Northern Ireland and claimed hundreds of lives, many of them civilians killed in error or caught in the crossfire. It took a monumental peace agreement between the leaders of four different nations to end the worst of the violence, though the Troubles continued to reverberate into the new millennium. Today the people of Northern Ireland live in a fragile but hopeful peace. On October 28th Alpha History will unveil a comprehensive educational website on Northern Ireland and the Troubles, 1968 to 1998. It will feature more than 400 different resources including an topic pages, documents, videos, image and mural galleries, a glossary, timelines, a who's who, quotations and online activities.
