Qutb Complex Delhi
A day trip to the Qutb Minar (قطب مینار), at 73 m the tallest minar in India, built c. 1192 by Qutub-ud-din Aibak immediately after the defeat of Delhi's last Hindu kingdom (an inscription over its eastern gate informs that it was built with material obtained from demolishing '27 Hindu temples'.) A 7 m high iron pillar stands in the courtyard, dated to a few centuries before the Qutb Minar and attributed to local Tomar kings. The Seljuq-style Alai Darwaza, Iltutmish's Tomb and other nearby buildings constitute the Qutb complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Minar is made of red sandstone and marble; it has a base diameter of 14 m, which narrows to about 3 m at the top. Construction was started in 1192 by Qutub-ud-din Aibak and carried on by his successor, Iltutmish. Ala-ud-din Khilji made several extensions to the complex. In 1368, Firoz Shah Tughluq constructed the fifth and the last section.- published: 07 Dec 2013
