How Detroit became America's Warzone
Industrial Ghosts - USA: Unemployment, poverty, gangs and drugs are just a few of the many problems facing the city of Detroit, labelled by some as 'America's warzone' For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/videopageonthewebsite Detroit was once the symbol of America's industrial power; the birthplace of Ford, the assembly line and the home of GM. But now it feels more like a ghost town littered with abandoned buildings. In 1913 Detroit was booming but when the Great Depression hit, this abruptly ended. Between 2006 and 2008 four of GM's plants in Michigan closed, and more than 15,000 are homeless in the city. "There's no work in Michigan... all you see is vacant houses" explains one homeless resident. As industries move to areas with cheaper labour, former assembly line workers and buildings are left useless. Bankrupt - How Cronyism and Corruption Brought Down Detroit
www.detroitbankruptmovie.com Detroit U.S.A.: Once the most prosperous city in America. With a booming manufacturing sector and cultural magnetism, the city had bright horizons after World War II. But as the 1960′s rolled in, the marriage of Big Business and Big Government overtook Detroit. The central planners in government needed the powerful corporations, and the powerful corporations came to depend on the bureaucracy, too. The marriage worked well for the politicians and for their corporate cronies, but Detroit itself entered a decades-long decline. America watched as Detroit slowly bled people, jobs and revenue. Politicians tried spending money. They tried raising taxes. The more they taxed and spent, the faster the city declined. Detroit still had its "Big Three" auto manufacturers, until two of its crown jewels, General Motors and Chrysler, imploded in 2008 under the weight of reckless and subsidized mismanagement. Instead of allowing market forces to rebuild Detroit and the auto industry, the United States handed billions of dollars to General Motors and Chrysler. Five years later, the city of Detroit is bankrupt and almost $20 billion dollars in debt. Meanwhile, General Motors has a cash balance of over $20 billion, still owes the taxpayers over $10 billion dollars that outgoing CEO Dan Akerson said will not be paid, and the company continues to benefit from an unprecedented $18 billion tax gift from the bankruptcy. Why is General Motors walking away with billions while Detroit dies? How did so much money change hands between the world's most powerful corporate leaders and government officials while delivering on so little of the promise sold to America by central planners? Bankrupt: How Cronyism & Corruption Took Down Detroit answers this question, and many others. Complete with the candid analysis of pundits, journalists, analysts and government officials, sourcing of historical news and government archives, and on-scene interviews with everyday Detroiters, Bankrupt sheds light on what happened to Detroit, and who is to blame. And most importantly, it asks "What is next for the Motor City?"- published: 01 Feb 2014

How the American dream went wrong in Detroit
Detroit - Ain't too proud to beg: What happened to the previously booming industrial city of Detroit, and can it be saved? For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/videopageonthewebsite The city of Motown and big cars is turning into an industrial wasteland. As General Motors sinks to its knees, this story asks can the fortunes of the US car industry still be turned around? Motown legend Martha Reeves believes there's hope for Detroit. 'The Motown mood is a good time and a party. There's sunshine in the music' she says. Yet driving through the city a different story is told - derelict buildings, deserted streets and abandoned factories. 'That's something you feel in your stomach every day'. At the centre of it all is the iconic General Motors empire. 'There were 17000 people when it started' says a former employee 'it's gone down to 16000.' Thousands like him grieve for the company as for a loved one. The company's lack of innovation may be to blame. "When there was a situation where you could do something that was hard or do the minimum amount, they always took the latter path' says former GM executive, Robert Kleinbaum. With more competitive, greener products in the pipeline, GM still believes in its future. 'We are two, three years ahead. We can build very compelling vehicles'. But under the surface plans to file for bankruptcy are being put in motion. 'Detroit has always been the industrial base. We can't just give it all away' says long-time resident DJ Dick. It seems that the days of the classic Pontiac are truly over. The Truth Behind Those $1 Detroit Homes
The Truth Behind Those $1 Detroit Homes
Downtown Detroit is seeing a revitalization of sorts sparked by Dan Gilbert's $1 billion investment in the area. Since 2010, Gilbert's investment has created an estimated 6,500 jobs in downtown, and, as a result, it's nearly impossible to find a vacant apartment as residential occupancy rates reached as high as 99.4% for the downtown area. But what about the rest of the city? You can buy a bunch of homes outside of downtown Detroit for under $500 and some are even listed at just $1. Problem is: these prices are incredibly misleading. The homes are in abysmal condition and there are few city services in and around these neighborhoods. Detroit realtor John Lewis took us to the Brightmoor neighborhood to show us what these $1 Detroit homes are really like. ------------------------- Produced by William Wei ------------------------- Music: "Space Coast" by Topher Mohr & Alex Elena via The YouTube Audio Library ------------------------- Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------- published: 28 Jan 2014

Real Scenes: Detroit
You can't talk about electronic music without mentioning Detroit. That's why in the second edition of Real Scenes, RA and Bench went to the city which birthed the genre we now call techno.
Detroit has always had a creative streak, due in large part to the boom and subsequent bust of the auto industry. Quite simply, Detroit is a city of extremes, and its music reflects that. These days, Detroit's importance in the global electronic music scene is often referred to in the past tense. When we visited the city, though, we found a number of artists with their eyes (and ears) firmly set towards the future. After our time in the Motor City, it's clear to us that Detroit will endure and innovate for years to come.
