I finally moved away from using soldering pencils to a soldering station. Here is a quick review of the newly updated FX-888D. Basically it's the same as the 888, but now with a digital display instead of the analog dial of the older version. You can also fine tune the temperature adjustment digitally instead of using a set screw the older model used. The included tip is a 1.5mm chisel tip.
The best part is this unit performs as well as $200+ soldering stations but only cost me $91 shipped from amazon and also came with a small wire cutting tool for free.

Short version: buy an FR-801 used or an FR-810. The all-in-one FM-206 station utilizes the terrible FM-2029 hot air nozzle. Hakko's standalone hot air stations such as the FR-801 and FR-810 are excellent, but the one built into the FM-206 is awful.
Here I go over the Hakko FM-206 station with an FM-2029 hot air pencil, and contrast it to a Hakko FR-801 at maximum heat settings for each.
I do not solder at maximum heat, but wanted to give a comparison of the potential of each. In my opinion most 3 in one stations for soldering, desoldering, and hot air are worse than having separate discrete hot air and soldering stations and this experience has been no different.

I have recommended the FR-801 for the longest time, but it is now discontinued and unavailable. Hakko's successor to the FR-801 is terrible for many reasons I will discuss in this video, and actually costs more than the Weller WHA900.

Straight out of the box the fake unit has presets enabled, whereas the genuine Hakko needs these to be enabled in the menu first.
The buttons (and everything else) are nicer on the genuine.

I finally moved away from using soldering pencils to a soldering station. Here is a quick review of the newly updated FX-888D. Basically it's the same as the 888, but now with a digital display instead of the analog dial of the older version. You can also fine tune the temperature adjustment digitally instead of using a set screw the older model used. The included tip is a 1.5mm chisel tip.
The best part is this unit performs as well as $200+ soldering stations but only cost me $91 shipped from amazon and also came with a small wire cutting tool for free.
