This is kind of a nutshell description of what the device purports to be, particularly because it hammers home the notion of "free access to 5,000 TV stations". Misleading advertising or clever marketing ploy? Rabbit TV is a small USB stick ($10 online or at retailers like Walgreens or Walmart) that has been designed to simplify access to streaming TV shows and movies from existing (and legal) websites. It also throws in 9,000 Internet radio stations, too. To be clear, this isn't access to some secret site that hosts everything under the sun on the sly. All it does is index the free content available through sites like Hulu, Netflix, Crackle, Spike TV, G4, the major networks and others, and lays it out in one user-friendly interface. The initial $10 cost covers the device and a year of service. It's a $10 annual subscription thereafter. That simplicity is key in the marketing message because it's supposed to work with little know-how. Anyone plugging it in — including grandma on a PC or Mac laptop or desktop that she barely knows how to use — can easily access streaming TV content through simple selections. Rabbit TV also has a sort of Internet TV guide that indexes content and tells you when it's available. Users are also covered for piracy because all the content links are legal, so grandma doesn't have to live in fear that the Internet police will break down her door and arrest her (since that happens all the time, right?). Detractors of the device have been quick to judge it a scam, mainly because it doesn't offer anything that isn't already freely available on the Web. The sentiment is understandable, but the criticism is still a little off the mark. If it were a scam, it would either not work as advertised at all or have extra hidden costs that quickly erode the notion of anything actually being "free". Others might also not like that it doesn't offer unique access to content that wouldn't otherwise be available. It obviously doesn't help that the company's ads are higher on rhetoric and vague references than actually explaining how the thing works. Not to mention they gloss over the fact it's a $10 annual subscription after the first year's up. But the bottom line is that it does do what it's supposed to in that it brings streaming content from a number of sources onto your computer. There are, of course, some notable caveats to consider. Since Rabbit TV can only show movie content which is already freely available on the Internet, the selection is less-than-enticing. Also, though the Rabbit TV says it offers access to local TV stations from across the nation, that doesn't appear to be entirely true. There's precious little available from New York, and Oregon isn't represented at all. Is Rabbit TV's commercial and website shady?
