Ezra Levant on Neil Young & the Alberta oilsands
OTTAWA -- - Responding to Neil Young's anti-oilsands tour, the Prime Minister's Office says the rocker and political activist should mind his own carbon footprint before opposing projects it says present First Nations with economic opportunities unprecedented in Canada's history "The resource sector creates economic opportunities and employs tens of thousands of Canadians in high-wage jobs, contributing to a standard of living that is envied around the world and helping fund programs and services Canadians rely on," Prime Minister Stephen Harper's spokesman, Jason MacDonald, told QMI Agency. "Even the lifestyle of a rock star relies, to some degree, on the resources developed by thousands of hard-working Canadians every day," MacDonald noted. A vocal environmentalist and critic of Canada's oilsands, Young, a longtime resident of California, partnered with First Nations groups in Alberta for his Honour the Treaties Tour, which includes four shows beginning Sunday in Toronto, then Regina, Winnipeg and Calgary. Proceeds of the sold-out concerts go toward the yet undefined legal actions by the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation to fight the expansion of the Shell-owned Jackpine Mine, 70 kilometres outside Fort McMurray, Alta., approved last month by the feds. In September, Young caused a bit of an uproar in Alberta when he said at a National Farmers Union event in Washington, D.C., "Fort McMurray looks like Hiroshima. "Fort McMurray is a wasteland," Young said. "The fuel's all over, the fumes everywhere -- you can smell it when you get to town. The closest place to Fort McMurray that is doing the tar sands work is 25 or 30 miles out of town and you can taste it when you get to Fort McMurray," he said. "People are sick. People are dying of cancer because of this. All the First Nations people up there are threatened by this." In a press conference Sunday, Young accused the Canadian government of breaking its promise to First Nations. Allan Adam, chief of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, told the CBC his community suffers high levels of cancer, lupus, skin rashes, asthma; he wants the government find out whether nearby oilsands activity is connected. Shell says the expansion will create 750 new full-time positions plus construction jobs. "We meet regularly with aboriginal communities to discuss projects, training and business opportunities," Shell spokesman David Williams said. "Conversations are open, regular and most often constructive."- published: 14 Jan 2014

Ezra Levant rebuts Neil Young's oilsands myths
Neil Young says 'rock stars don't need oil' Neil Young is not backing away from his criticism of the Harper government and the expansion of the oilsands, responding to a statement from the prime minister's spokesperson with a point-by-point refutation. Young blasted the government's approval of a mine expansion plan in northern Alberta during a news conference Sunday, where he said Stephen Harper's government was choosing money over integrity in its ongoing approval of oilsands projects. Harper's spokesperson responded to Young's claims in a statement issued Sunday, saying even "rock stars" use the resources that are being recovered in Alberta. Jason MacDonald also noted the oilsand projects are only approved when they are deemed safe for Canadians and the environment, and added that Canada's resource sector strengthens the economy with high-wage jobs. "Even the lifestyle of a rock star relies, to some degree, on the resources developed by thousands of hard-working Canadians every day," MacDonald said. Young issued a point-by-point refutation of MacDonald's claims on Monday. The 68-year-old rock music legend said he had an issue with the government "breaking treaties with the First Nation and plundering the natural resources the First Nation has rights to under the treaties." Young also noted that "rock stars don't need oil," pointing out that he drove his electric car from California to the oilsands and on to Washington without using any oil at all. "And I'm a rock star. My car's generator runs on biomass, one of several future fuels Canada should be developing for the post-fossil fuel age," he continued. "As to the thousands of hard-working Canadians, we have respect for all working people. The quandary we face is the job they are working on. They are digging a hole that our grandchildren will have great trouble digging their way out of . . . There are better jobs to be developing, with clean energy source industries to help make the world a safer place for our grandchildren." Young is in the middle of a four-date tour benefiting Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Legal Fund. His goal is to raise $75,000 to help the First Nation in its legal challenge of two Shell Canada mine projects in Alberta's Athabasca tar sands region. Young's statement included allegations of the toxic environmental effects of the oilsands and pointed out that the "oil is not going to Canada, but to China where the air quality has been measured at 30 times the levels of safety established by the World Health Organization." "Is that what Canada is all about?" he asked. "As a Canadian citizen, I am concerned that this government is not acting within the advice of science." Young closed by responding to another of MacDonald's statements, in which he said the government "recognizes the importance of developing resources responsibly and sustainably and we will continue to ensure that Canada's environmental laws and regulations are rigorous." "When people say one thing and do another, it is hypocrisy," Young replied. "Our Canadian environmental laws don't matter if they are broken."- published: 15 Jan 2014

Ezra Levant on Saskatoon's sharia-compliant taxis
Guide dogs are not the point. Dogs as pets, alcohol, pork - Muslim cabbies cannot be allowed to dictate what a person may bring into a cab. ========================================= A man who says he and his guide dog have been having trouble with a Saskatoon cab company has filed a complaint with the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission. Mike Simmonds says the problem started two months ago when a dispatcher for Comfort Cabs told him he would need a pet-friendly taxi. He says he's been told twice since then that drivers weren't comfortable with his seeing-eye dog because of their religious beliefs. He called the manager to complain and received an apology. Simmonds says the manager suggested there must have been a misunderstanding. The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code prohibits discrimination against people with service animals. "It baffles me that in this century people have such problems with guide dogs," Simmonds said Friday. "If you're driving a taxi in this country, you have got to know that you're open to service dogs." Cliff Kowbel, operations manager at Comfort Cabs, said that the company continually informs its drivers that working dogs are not pets. He said the company has a policy that the dogs are not to be refused. Simmonds said he was on his way to the airport two weeks ago when he was turned away by a driver who said a larger cab was needed. "I said, 'Here, the suitcase goes in the back or in the trunk and he's designed to go under my feet. We've got to get to the airport.'" Simmonds said he could tell the driver was obviously uncomfortable, so he asked him if he had a problem with dogs. The driver replied that associating with dogs was against his religious beliefs. It was the third time Simmonds was refused a ride that pushed him to file the human rights complaint. He had called ahead for a taxi to pick him and his dog, Graham, up at a bus stop. When the cab didn't show up, he called the dispatcher again. He said she told him she was having a hard time finding a cab for him because of the drivers' religious beliefs. Simmonds had to wait an additional 20 minutes outside for a taxi to come from across the city. "That's where I said, 'Enough is enough. Three strikes, you're out,' and I'll make my pitch." Simmonds said he has never filed a human rights complaint before, but feels he needs to this time to make sure guide dogs are welcome. "I find great offence in people not wanting to let him — and therefore me — into their business. That's wrong." The issue of service dog owners being refused taxi rides has come up recently in Regina as well. Kelly Scherr, the city's director of construction and compliance, says the city is making changes to its taxi bylaw. "We're told that there are some challenges with people being refused trips when they have a service animal with them," Scherr said. "Although there is provincial legislation ... we are bringing our bylaw into line with the provincial legislation just to provide some additional support." Proposed bylaw amendments are to come before council in February.- published: 10 Dec 2013
