The Russian poems Ivan Turgenev
Russian poems
The great Russian writer and poet Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (Иван Сергеевич Тургенев) was born on November 9, 1818.

"A marvellously sweet occupation it is to lie on your back in a wood and gaze upwards! You may fancy you are looking into a bottomless sea; that it stretches wide below you; that the trees are not rising out of the earth, but, like the roots of gigantic weeds, are dropping -- falling straight down into those glassy, limpid depths; the leaves on the trees are at one moment transparent as emeralds, the next, they condense into golden, almost black green. Somewhere, afar off, at the end of a slender twig, a single leaf hangs motionless against the blue patch of transparent sky, and beside it another trembles with the motion of a fish on the line, as though moving of its own will, not shaken by the wind."
"Round white clouds float calmly across, and calmly pass away like submarine islands; and suddenly, all this ocean, this shining ether, these branches and leaves steeped in sunlight -- all is rippling, quivering in fleeting brilliance, and a fresh trembling whisper awakens like the tiny, incessant plash of suddenly stirred eddies. You don't move -- you look, and no word can tell what peace, what joy, what sweetness reigns in the heart."

Patrick Marber, Amanda Drew, Mark Gatiss, Royce Pierreson, Cherrelle Skeete and John Simm talk about the summer setting, Turgenev's inspiration on Chekhov and unrequited love in this short film for Three Days in the Country.
Summer love. A passionate comedy.
A handsome new tutor brings reckless, romantic desire to an eccentric household. Over three days one summer the young and the old will learn lessons in love: first love and forbidden love, maternal love and platonic love, ridiculous love and last love. The love left unsaid and the love which must out.
Ivan Turgenev’s passionate, moving comedy, A Month in the Country, has been a source of inspiration for films, a ballet and the plays of Chekhov. It's presented here in a new version by Patrick Marber whose work includes Closer and The Red Lion.

Ivan Turgenev’s passionate, moving comedy, A Month in the Country, has been a source of inspiration for films, a ballet and the plays of Chekhov. It's presented here in a new version by Patrick Marber whose work includes Closer and The Red Lion.

A Sportsman's Sketches
Ivan TURGENEV (1818 - 1883), translated by Constance GARNETT (1861 - 1946)
A Sportsman's Sketches (Russian: Записки охотника; also known as The Hunting Sketches and Sketches from a Hunter's Album) was an 1852 collection of short stories by Ivan Turgenev. It was the first major writing that gained him recognition. He wrote this collection of short stories based on his own observations while hunting at his mother’s estate at Spasskoye, where he learned of the abuse of the peasants and the injustices of the Russian system that constrained them. The frequent abuse of Turgenev by his mother certainly had an effect on this work. The stories were first published in The Contemporary with each story separate before appearing in 1852 in book form. He was about to give up writing when the first story, "Khor and Kalinich," was well received. This work is part of the Russian realist tradition in that the narrator is usually an uncommitted observer of the people he meets. - Summary by Wikipedia

Russian poems
The great Russian writer and poet Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (Иван Сергеевич Тургенев) was born on November 9, 1818.
Note. This poem was written by Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev in 1843.

How, and How Not, to Love Mankind [Theodore Dalrymple]
Another of my very favourite TD essays, this one compares two 19th Century thinkers - Karl Marx and Ivan Turgenev. I believe that the observations, the wisdom, and the thorough takedown of Marx as a human being, are of great value.

Heres a virtual movie of the Russian Novelist, poet, and playwright Ivan Turgenev reading in English his philosophical poem "The Dog" Dog guardians the world over will understand what this great Russian poet was getting at. the interdependance that exists within the relationship between dog and man. The frienship one recieves from a dog is to my mind perhaps highest level of friendship we shall ever experience as I say you have to be a companion to a dog to know how special that bond is this poet knew this fact well.
Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (Russian: Иван Сергеевич Тургенев, IPA: [ɪˈvan sʲɪrˈɡʲeɪvʲɪtɕ turˈɡʲenʲɪf]) (November 9, 1818 -- September 3, 1883[1]) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, and playwright. His first major publication, a short story collection entitled A Sportsman's Sketches, is a milestone of Russian Realism, and his novel Fathers and Sons is regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction.

THE DOG
by: Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883)
S two in the room; my dog and me. . . . Outside a fearful storm is howling.
The dog sits in front of me, and looks me straight in the face.
And I, too, look into his face.
He wants, it seems, to tell me something. He is dumb, he is without words, he does not understand himself -- but I understand him.
I understand that at this instant there is living in him and in me the same feeling, that there is no difference between us. We are the same; in each of us there burns and shines the same trembling spark.
Death sweeps down, with a wave of its chill broad wing. . . .
And the end!
Who then can discern what was the spark that glowed in each of us?
No! We are not beast and man that glance at one another. . . .
They are the eyes of equals, those eyes riveted on one another.
And in each of these, in the beast and in the man, the same life huddles up in fear close to the other.

Lucy Worsley concludes her history of the Romanov dynasty, investigating how the family's grip on Russia unravelled in their final century. She shows how the years 1825-1918 were bloody and traumatic, a period when four tsars tried - and failed - to deal with the growing pressure for constitutional reform and revolution.
Lucy finds out how the Romanovs tried to change the system themselves - in 1861, millions of enslaved serfs were freed by the Tsar-Liberator, Alexander II. But Alexander paid the ultimate penalty for opening the Pandora's box of reform when he was later blown up by terrorists on the streets of St Petersburg.
Elsewhere, there was repression, denial, war and - in the case of the last tsar, Nicholas II - a fatalistic belief in the power of God, with Nicholas's faith in the notorious holy man Rasputin being a major part in his undoing. Lucy also details the chilling murder of Nicholas and his family in 1918, and asks whether all of this horror have been avoided.
Lucy also shows how there was a growing movement among the people of Russia to determine their own fate. She traces the growth of the intelligentsia, writers and thinkers who sought to have a voice about Russia. Speaking out came with a risk - after Ivan Turgenev wrote about the appalling life of the serfs in 1852, he was sentenced to house arrest by tsar Nicholas I. Lucy also shows how anger against the Romanov regime created a later generation of radicals committed to overturning the status quo. Some would turn to terrorism and, finally, revolution.
As well as political upheaval there is private drama, and Lucy explains how Nicholas II's family life played into his family's downfall. His son and heir Alexei suffered from haemophilia - the secrecy the family placed around the condition led them into seclusion, further distancing them from the Russian people. It also led them to the influence of man who seemed to have the power to heal their son, and who was seen as a malign influence on Nicholas - Rasputin.

We chat to Mark Gatiss about his current project Three Days in the Country at the National Theatre.
Ivan Turgenev’s passionate, moving comedy, A Month in the Country, has been a source of inspiration for films, a ballet and the plays of Chekhov. It's presented here in a new version by Patrick Marber whose work includes Closer and The Red Lion – also playing at the National.

This video should be of interest to people who are very knowledgeable about Russian literature, language and culture. For the others we provided remarks to help them out understand people and events mentioned in Zhirinovsky's speech.
Russian politician Zhirinovsky spoke at the Federation Council about what everyone should do to protect Russian language from borrowing too many foreign words, when there are pure Russian alternatives.
Aired live on RT on: 24/12/2014
Many thans for translation and description to Zahinho https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0ICG5D24Y0URj5hnYMwK2Q
Remarks:
1. ‘’Dead souls’’ (1842), by Nikolai Gogol. Now, don’t get too excited about this. This is not some horror story with dead rising from their graves. This is a novel of Gogol, which basically shows some fraudster, who goes around, buying documents of peasants who already died, for cheap, to re-sell to others as living, to make money. You can read the English translation, and download it for free here (considered public domain):
https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/g/gogol/nikolai/g61d/index.html
Or read more information about it on WP page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Souls
2. ‘’Woe from wit’’ (1823), by Alexander Griboyedov. I haven’t read it, nor saw the play (maybe I did, but I don’t remember). I don’t know what’s it about. You can read the actual play here, although idk if you will understand anything:
http://spintongues.vladivostok.com/griboyedov.htm
Or read more information about it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woe_from_Wit
3. ‘’Mumu’’ (1852), by Ivan Turgenev. So, this is a short story everyone is talking about. Shortly… It’s about a deaf and mute serf yardman – Gerasim, who was working at some rich noble woman, and who had nobody, but this 1 little dog that was constantly barking. So, cuz he was deaf, he didn’t mind, but the woman at some point got tired of it, and told him to get rid of it. So he went on a boat and drowned it.
The ‘’official’’ morale and explanation of the story, which Zhirinovsky doubts, is to show the cruelty of rich people towards poor and miserable.
You can read it translated here:
https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/t/turgenev/ivan/mumu/
4. If you don’t know who Vasilyeva is. She’s this middle age bitch, who was involved in corruption case in defense ministry. They, together with this fat corrupted defense minister Serdyukov stole billions in defense contracts, if not trillions. Vasilyeva got 3 years or something, but it doesn’t matter now, cuz she went to prison for 2 months, and now she’s free. Serdyukov got released, didn’t served any time. It’s Russia for you, guys. The more you steal, the less time you do. Paradox? Consistent pattern? Pick your poison.
If you wanna read more about these 2 turds (not that you would want to), here is WP pages:

I just wanna point out, that Yesenin is a very very good poet. I’m a huge admirer of his work. It’s such an easy read, and extremely clever play of words. Unfortunately, you can’t fully understand it, unless you can speak fluent Russian. I don’t know how would they translate him to English, but if you can find any translations, I highly recommend it.
7. Medinsky is the minister of culture. Livanov - there are 3 Livanovs. All of them are related to theater, cinema, writing, etc. Idk who Z is referring to.
8.In Soviet Union, a 5 grade system was introduced in all schools and universities. But in reality, it was 4 grade system. 2 - fail, 3 - pass, 4 - high pass, 5 - perfect.
9. As you can already tell, these words are written with a hyphen, after a word you want, and before these words guy asked him about. In particular: ...-кое, ...-то, ...-либо, ...-нибудь, ...-таки.

Classic Stage Company said Tuesday that "Game of Thrones" actor Peter Dinklage and Taylor Schilling from "Orange Is The New Black" will co-star as Rakitin and Natalya in the revival, which kicks off Jan. The play, set on a country estate in 1840s Russia, deals with a bored, older and married woman who falls for a younger man, her son's tutor, who is idolized by the woman's vulnerable ward.
