Grace Metalious (born Marie Grace DeRepentigny, September 8, 1924 – February 25, 1964) was an American author, best known for her controversial novel Peyton Place, which stayed on The New York Times bestseller list for 59 weeks. It sold 20 million copies in hardcover and another 12 million as a Dell paperback.
She was born into poverty and a broken home in the mill town of Manchester, New Hampshire, writing from an early age. At Manchester Central High School she acted in school plays, and after graduation, she married George Metalious in a Catholic church in Manchester in 1943, thus becoming a housewife and mother. The couple lived in near squalor but she continued to write. With one child, the couple moved to Durham, New Hampshire, where George attended the University of New Hampshire. In Durham, Grace Metalious began writing seriously. When George graduated, he took a position as principal at a school in Gilmanton, New Hampshire.

Basically Return to Peyton Place is a high-class soap opera. The screenplay preserves the nature of Grace Metalious' novel, alternately building three or four separate but related story veins into individual crescendos, then welding the moving parts into a single grand climax in which everything falls neatly into place. The basic stories are: (1) Carol Lynley's, as the tyro novelist whose close-to-home fiction produces civic repercussions and whose romantic relations with her editor-publisher (Jeff Chandler) accelerate her maturity; (2) Tuesday Weld's, as the emotionally-troubled girl whose past misfortunes are soothed when Lynley's book sheds new light into the matter; and (3) Mary Astor's, as a super-possessive Peyton Place mother who attempts to wreck the marriage of her son. Jose Fer...

PEYTON PLACE (1957) "The book that could never be filmed!" In 1957, screenwriter John Michael Hayes faced this kind of stigma over the film version of "Peyton Place", Grace Metalious's scandalous bestseller about the dirty secrets of small town life in America. Hayes however, beat the odds and turned in an Oscar nominated screenplay that eventually earned the film the reputation of being "The best film ever made from a bad book!" In the lead role of Constance, the repressed mother, director Mark Robson cast Lana Turner against type and she received her only nomination as Best Actress. For the teenagers, he cast virtual unknowns, Diane Varsi, Hope Lange and Russ Tamblin, all nominated as well, along with screen veterans Terry Moore, Betty Field, Mildred Dunnock and Arthur Kennedy w...
Read your free e-book: http://copydl.space/mebk/50/en/B001LRPTMK/book The juicy biography of the scandalous novelist who lifted the lid off a New England town Indian summer is like a woman. Ripe, hotly passionate, but fickle, she comes and goes as she pleases so that one is never sure whether she will come at all, nor for how long she will stay. . . . So begins Peyton Place by Grace Metalious (1924-1964). In September, 1956, it burst onto the American scene as the most controversial novel of the century. Its publication was also an extraordinary story of personal triumph. Grace Metalious, an unpretentious housewife from the wrong side of the tracks, had written an explosive bestseller. From a cottage in a small New England milltown, she zoomed to national stardom. She met movie stars, famo...

A LibriVox recording of How to Live on Twenty-Four Hours a Day, by Arnold Bennett. Read by Mark F. Smith "Which of us lives on twenty-four hours a day? And when I say 'lives,' I do not mean exists, nor 'muddles through.'" Arnold Bennett knew a "rat race" when he saw one. Every day, his fellow white-collar Londoners followed the same old routine. And they routinely decried the sameness in their lives. So Bennett set out to explain how to inject new enthusiasm into living. In this delightful little work, he taught his fellow sufferers how to set time apart for improving their lives. Yes, he assured them, it could be done. Yes, if you want to feel connected with the world, instead of endlessly pacing the treadmill (or, "exceeding your programme", as he called it), you must do so. For time...
