Social Class in America 1957 McGraw-Hill Text-Films
Social Class in America 1957 McGraw-Hill Text-Films
more at http://quickfound.net Shows the differences in the life experience of three male babies from three different social classes. One young man succeeds his father as president of the family manufacturing company. Another, a middle-class white-collar worker at the same company, leaves the town of his birth and moves to New York City where he becomes a respected advertising art director, thus rising in social status. A third, born into the working class, trains as a mechanic and holds an influential job at a service station. The sociological tone of the film does not mask a sobering narrative of the limitations that social class divisions inflict on all Americans.' Public domain film from the Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_class_in_the_United_States Social class in the United States is a controversial issue, having many competing definitions, models, and even disagreements over its very existence. Many Americans believe in a simple three-class model that includes the "rich", the "middle class", and the "poor". More complex models that have been proposed describe as many as a dozen class levels; while still others deny the very existence, in the European sense, of "social class" in American society. Most definitions of class structure group people according to wealth, income, education, type of occupation, and membership in a specific subculture or social network. Sociologists Dennis Gilbert, William Thompson, Joseph Hickey, and James Henslin have proposed class systems with six distinct social classes. These class models feature an upper or capitalist class consisting of the rich and powerful, an upper middle class consisting of highly educated and affluent professionals, a middle class consisting of college-educated individuals employed in white-collar industries, a lower middle class, a working class constituted by clerical and blue collar workers whose work is highly routinized, and a lower class divided between the working poor and the unemployed underclass... Some definitions of class look only at numerical measures such as wealth or income. Others take into account qualitative factors, such as education, culture, and social status. There is no consensus on which of these variables is essential and which are merely common correlates. It is also disputed whether sharp lines can be drawn... Social class is sometimes presented as a description of how members of the society have sorted themselves along a continuum of positions varying in importance, influence, prestige, and compensation. In these models, certain occupations are considered to be desirable and influential, while others are considered to be menial, repetitive, and unpleasant. (In some cases, non-occupational roles such as a parent or volunteer mentor, are also considered.) Generally, the higher the ranking on such a scale, the higher the skill and education levels required to perform it... In other cases, class or status is inherited... Upper class This term is applied to a wide array of elite groups existing in the United States of America. The term commonly includes the so-called "blue bloods" (multi-generational wealth combined with leadership of high society) such as the Astor or Roosevelt families. Twentieth century sociologist W. Lloyd Warner divided the upper class into two sections: the "upper-upper class" (or bourgeoisie) and "lower-upper class" (or "scoobs"). The former includes established upper-class families while the latter includes those with great wealth. As there is no defined lower threshold for the upper class it is difficult, if not outright impossible, to determine the exact number or percentage of American households that could be identified as being members of the upper-class(es). Income and wealth statistics may serve as a helpful guideline as they can be measured in a more objective manner. In 2005, approximately one and a half percent (1.5%) of households in the United States had incomes exceeding $250,000 with the top 5% having incomes exceeding $157,000. Furthermore only 2.6% of households held assets (excluding home equity) of more than one-million dollars. One could therefore fall under the assumption that less than five percent of American society are members of rich households. The richest 1% of the American population owns as much as the combined wealth of the bottom 90%, or perhaps even more...- published: 18 Nov 2013

75% of Koreans say it's difficult to move up social class 국민 75%, "노력해도 계층 상승 어렵다"
Click "CC" for Scripts Subscribe to Arirang News! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=arirangnews A new report shows three-out-of-four Koreans think they're unable to climb the social ladder,... no matter how hard they try,... with those in their 30s giving the most negative responses. Our Kim Min-ji explains what's behind the pessimism. Lee Ho-bong,... who is self-employed,... went through all kinds of hardships for 20 years,... before becoming the owner of a small franchise. It was his belief that "effort makes everything work" that kept him going. "I started my business when I was 28-years old with only a few hundred dollars. I tell my children to work hard and with passion." Although hope can be a driving force in life sometimes,... many Koreans these days are finding it hard to think positive. According to a survey by the Hyundai Research Institute,... 75-percent of Koreans said that moving up social class will be difficult regardless of how much effort they put in. Respondents in their 30s answered most pessimistically at about 80-percent,... likely due to increased economic expenses after starting a new family and having been through the intense competition in the job market. "There are many opportunities for the people in the higher tier. For those stuck in the middle,... there aren't many opportunities available even if you try hard." The survey takers cited increased living expenses and unfair hiring practices as the main reasons for not being able to climb the social ladder. About 21 percent of the participants also said they have fallen in social class during the past year,... while only 2-percent said they have moved up the ladder. "If more people think moving up social class is difficult,... they will put in less effort and thus the dynamics of the economy will fall. Tensions could also rise between the different social classes." Experts say the government needs to strengthen public education, reduce housing expenses, and create stable jobs,... in order to provide a bridge for citizens to move up in the world. Performance Art by Kyrahm and Julius Kaiser

The barter of jewles in exchange for injuring the flesh represents the atavistic theme of the differences of social classes and of the power games associated with gender roles
However, also represents the brutal violence often carried out on women leading to murder
Violence on women does not belong to an era, it has no boundaries, it is endemic and spares no race, no nation, no country, whether industrialized or emerging. Violence on women has no social-cultural limits, victims and aggressors belong to every social class. The greatest danger is often within the family – husbands, fathers, followed by friends, neighbours and work colleagues. According to OMS, one out of every five women, in their life time has been a victim of physical or sexual abuse by a man (Sdamy).
With this performance I’ve tried to shift the attention to the baby: the arguments between the parents, it’s the children who suffer the consequences.
The work is a new of the performance “The Jeweler” (Il gioielliere) pand the baby projected on the tummy is the same video art version of Human Installations.

Bicycle Portraits - everyday South Africans and their bicycles.
Stan Engelbrecht & Nic Grobler are publishing the best 165 portraits and stories of the over 500 portraits of cyclists they’ve photographed during their 2 year journey around South Africa. Divided over 3 books, each will contain a different 55 stories, and also two essays each by local South African and major international cycling figures. The books are designed by Gabrielle Guy (www.gabrielleguy.com) and they have also collaborated with celebrated South African artist Gabrielle Raaff (www.gabrielleraaff.com) to create an individual hand-painted watercolor map, based on Google Maps, to indicate the location of each of the portraits.
When they started the project, Bicycle Portraits aimed to be a study of South African commuter culture, and they wanted to find out who rides bicycles, why they ride bicycles, if and why they love their bicycles, and of course why so few South Africans choose bicycles as a transport option. But Bicycle Portraits has turned into a portrait of a nation through the bicycles that they own and ride every day - revealing all manner of social, class, historical and cultural nuances never imagined.
