How to Make a Pink Zebra Cake Tutorial from Cookies Cupcakes and Cardio
Read blog post here: http://cookiescupcakesandcardio.com/?p=4839 Learn how to make a pink zebra cake recipe. Zebra cake ingredients & equipment: • 2 ½ cups all purpose flour • 2 cups sugar • ¾ cups vegetable oil • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 2 ¼ teaspoons baking powder • 4 eggs • 1 cup milk • white, pink, and black gel paste • vanilla buttercream • black fondant • pink buttercream • Wilton tip 1A *white colouring is optional if you wish to have a lighter batter, you can use the batter as is *you may also choose to omit the pink portion, and just use it as black Procedure: Preheat oven to 350F/170F. In the bowl of a stand mixer combine, flour, sugar, baking powder, vegetable oil and vanilla on low/medium until ingredients are mixed together. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing on low in between additions. Slowly add the milk while the mixer on and mix until all ingredients are completely combined. Divide batter into three different bowls with one bowl having half of the batter and the other two have a quarter each. Colour the large bowl with white colouring, and the smaller two with black and pink respectively. Mix colouring until no light streaks remain. Spray two 8" pans with non-stick spray and line bottom with parchment/baking/wax paper. Place four tablespoons of white batter into the center of each pan. Then, directly into the middle of the white batter, place two tablespoons of black batter. Directly into the centre of the black batter, place two tablespoons of pink batter. Repeat white/black/pink batter additions until all the batter is used up or pans are ⅔ full. Place pans into oven and bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes, remove from pan, and cool completely on a wire wrack. Once cake is cooled, level, stack and cover in white buttercream. To cut the fondant pieces, roll fondant out very thinly and using a rolling cutter (pizza or pastry) slice long, narrow stripes and arrange on white cake as desired. To finish the cake off, using the pink buttercream with Wilton 1A tip, pipe a small beaded border along the bottom of the cake. How to Make Valentine's Day Cake Pops!
How to Make Valentine's Day Cake Pops!
Hi guys! These Valentine's Day cake pops are super adorable, and I'll share with all my secrets to super smooth candy coating for easy dipping! I love the taste of cake pops too -- they taste like a super moist cake to me! Have fun mixing and matching different sprinkles and colors of candy coating while making these, and they would be a great addition to any Valentine's Day party! Enjoy, and don't forget to share your creations with me on my Facebook page (http://on.fb.me/14LNQ1d) Recipe Makes 12 cake pops Half of a 9" x 13" cake 1/3 cup frosting Candy coating in various colors Lollipop sticks Sprinkles Optional: EZ Thin candy thinner (purchased at Michael's), shortening, or canola oil. Directions: 1. Crumble cake into fine crumbs. Add in frosting and combine. 2. Using an ice cream scoop, scoop out cake balls and roll into a ball with your hands. For heart-shaped cake pops, flatten out the cake ball and form tip into a V-shape. Then use your pinkie finger to create an indent at the top. Make sure it's still about 1 cm thick to insert your lollipop stick into! Refrigerate the finished cake balls for 20 min. 3. Melt your candy coating in the microwave on low power, stirring every 20 seconds. Dip your lollipop stick ½" into the coating, and insert into your cake ball. 4. Mix in 1 T. EZ Thins, shortening, or canola oil to thin coating. Dip cake pops into coating, and immediately decorate with sprinkles if desired. MAKE presents: The LED
Take a tour through the world of the light-emitting diode. Learn - who invented it, how to use it, and how to make your own.
Collin Cunningham: People are fascinated by light. I mean just glancing over at a display of flashing lights can grab my attention. Do you ever remember sitting around a campfire? Staring at the flames and just being totally transfixed, almost like if you're watching TV. It's comforting, and it can even by hypnotic. Recently, technology has made creating light a whole lot easier to do. For that, we have this little guy to thank. The light emitting diode, or LED for short.
LEDs have a lot of different uses, from a simple power on indicator to traffic signals. LEDs use about ten percent of the energy of a traditional light bulb, and they can last about thirty times longer. That makes them a pretty big hit with businesses looking to do large scale visual communication.
The first person to ever report the effects of a light emitting diode was researching another form of communication. In 1907, a man by the name of H. J. Round was researching radio waves for Marconi Labs. He was using a device called a cats whisker detector, which no, does not contain any cats or part of cats. Round was searching for a sweet spot on a crystal silicon carbide when he noticed something odd. Part of the crystal started to glow, it lit up a pale yellow, and that was an LED.
H. J. Round's crystal experiment was so cool and simple that I had to try it myself. So I got a piece of silicon carbide, then I hooked that up to the positive lead on my power supply. That's an alligator clip. I hooked a little sewing needle to the ground on my power supply. Then I began to search for light emitting zones.
I built my own sort of cats whisker detector in order to keep the needle in place on a particularly bright spot I found. Now I can sit back and enjoy the warm glow of a homemade LED anytime I choose, even though it's pretty dim, but it's still cool.
As far as we know, Round's research into light emitting crystals ended here, which is a shame because he was definitely on to something. But of course that's not the end of the story. Fifteen years later, in imperial Russia, a scientist and inventor named Oleg Vladmirovich Losev noticed that certain diodes in radios started to glow a bit when in use. Losev conducted a lot of heavy research and published his findings in several languages. But, sadly, they seem to have gone unnoticed. It wasn't until 1962, that a visible light emitting diode was made practical by Nick Holonyak working at General Electric. He's widely known as the father of the LED.
The technology that Holonyak brought to the public is remarkably similar to our crystal experiment. A thin metal wire connects one side of the circuit to a small piece of semi-conductive material on the other side. The LED's two leads are cut to different lengths to show you how it should be connected. The longer is called the anode, and that connects to positive. The shorter is the cathode, and that goes to negative. To power an LED, you can just use a simple coin cell. This is a CR2032. And just make sure the longer lead is on the positive side, which is wider and smoother, and negative is on the other. If you plan to use a battery, let's say a nine volt, you'll also need a resistor to limit the current so we don't burn out the LED. Connect negative to the cathode, the shorter lead, and we'll put a 470 ohm resistor between the positive battery and the anode. For more useful info, check out the LED Center, and there's a lot of great history at the LED Museum. For all types of project ideas, info, and inspiration head over to Makezine.com.

How to Make a Fire Tornado
How to Make a Fire Tornado
This demonstration has been around for a few years now and I figured it was about time I gave it a shot myself. Many have made fire tornado's using nothing more than a bowl of liquid alcohol for the flame, but I found that to be dangerous as the burning liquid could spill and cause a serious fire. The addition of cotton balls removes the risk of splashing. Care should always be taken around fire to be sure nothing flammable is nearby and that there is proper ventilation. A fire extinguisher should always be within reach whenever performing an experiment like this! Stay safe! So I'm going to show you how to mix baguette dough by hand. You start out with baguette dough doing an autolyze, and an autolyze is essentially a way to help the gluten in the dough form, and so I'm taking 72 degree water and I'm going to scale out 850 grams of it. Now into the water I'm going to scale out what is called poolish, and poolish is a preferment. And in bread bakers language a preferment is any kind of dough that's fermented, before the main dough is fermented, so a sourdough starter is a preferment, a poolish is a preferment, a sponge is a preferment, all of those things that you do ahead of time. with any type of yeast are called preferments. And so this poolish is equal parts flour and water, with the tiniest, tiniest bit of fresh yeast, and so I need 700 grams of poolish in my recipe and what I did, about 12 hours ago was I mixed 500 grams of bread flour with 500 grams of 70 degree water, with approximately... I didn't even scale up the yeast. I just used a very, very tiny, tiny pinch of yeast, and so that ferments. You can see it's really ripe right now and I need 700 grams, and so I'm going to scale this into my water. Great, and if you can see, this poolish is floating in the water and that's a sign that it's well fermented, because that carbon dioxide helps it to float. And so then into this, I'm going to pour in 1400 grams of all-purpose flour and I like to use all-purpose flour instead of bread flour, because the all-purpose flour helps split the fermentation. It ferments faster because the protein content isn't as high, it doesn't take as much for the yeast to feed on it. And so now I'm going to omit my salt and my yeast for the moment and I'm going to just sort of with my hands, just these three ingredients, combine them. And you just want to hydrate the flour. I'm just going to keep my one hand free for now and my other hand I'm just sort of using a circular motion to incorporate the ingredients, and then I'm going to sort of start to squeeze the ingredients together. I'm only using a metal bowl right now, because it's wide and it's easy for me to use. But you can use any type of bowl. This makes a lot of dough. This makes about three kilos of dough and so you want to use a big bowl, but it could be a ceramic bowl or any type of earthenware bowl is fine. So I just want to hydrate my flour, and it's going to be a shaggy mess when I'm done, because I'm not going to knead it right now. I'm going to let it rest for about 20 to 30 minutes during an autolyze period, and during that period of time my gluten will form and it will be easier for me to finish kneading it. So this shaggy bit of dough should look just pretty much like this. You don't have to go any further with the mixing. I'm going to clean my hand off and then I'm going to sprinkle my 36 grams of salt right on the surface, and that sort of helps the salt to start to dissolve, but it doesn't interfere with the gluten-forming process. Then I'm going to hold back my yeast and so I'm going to let this dough sit for about 30 minutes. Okay, so our baguette dough has been resting for 20 to 30 minutes, and now we're just going to sprinkle the yeast on and that's 8 grams of yeast. And so I'm going to use my hands to get it going, and then once I feel like the gluten has developed, I'm going to knead it on the surface of the table. Once it feels like it's not quite so sticky, I'm going to transfer it to the table. Okay, so I'm going to move it to the table. I'm going to add a little-- it's sticky right now so at this point I'm just going to get a little flour underneath just to help get it going, and now I'm going to start kneading it. And so I'm just sort of going to take my hands and I'm going to sort of rotate it as I go, and I'm going to knead it until the gluten is developed, until it passes the window pane test and is about seven minutes. So I'm using a lot of pressure as I knead it, and I sort of want to make sure, because my salt still needs to be incorporated, so I also want to make sure that my salt is incorporating. And if it sticks to the surface, just use your bench knife to get under it and add a little bit more flour. This bread doesn't take multiple days to make. This bread you can make the same day. You need to mix your poolish the day before, but we're going to make this bread all in one day. After we're done kneading it, it will ferment for two hours and then we will divide it, and shape it and proof it. The proofing time on this bread is really fast. It's only about 30 minutes and we'll proof it and th- published: 04 Feb 2014
