If you will open your Bible to the gospel of Luke and the twentieth chapter, we're going to return to the passion week, the week of our Lord Jesus Christ's crucifixion, and look at the next in the series of texts that Luke gives to us to record both the earthly and the spiritual history of this great week. Luke chapter 20 and I want to begin reading in verse 9 which will embrace the parable that we last studied because it's an essential one to what follows what we'll look at this morning.
Luke chapter 20 and verse 9: "And He began to tell the people this parable. A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey for a long time. And at the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers in order that they might give him some of the produce of the vineyard. But the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty handed. And so he proceeded to send another slave and they beat him also and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty handed. And he proceeded to send a third and this one also they wounded and cast out. And the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son, perhaps they will respect him.' But when the vine-growers saw him, they reasoned with one another saying, 'This is the heir. Let us kill him that the inheritance may be ours.' And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What therefore will the owner of the vineyard do to them? He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, 'May it never be.' But he looked at them and said, 'What then is this that is written? The stone which the builders rejected, this became the chief cornerstone. Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.' And the scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on him that very hour, but they feared the people for they understood that He spoke this parable against them. And they watched Him and sent spies who pretended to be righteous in order that they might catch Him in some statement so as to deliver Him up to the rule and the authority of the governor. And they questioned Him, saying, 'Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly and you are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?' But He detected their trickery and said to them, 'Show Me a denarius, whose likeness and inscription does it have?' And they said, 'Caesar's.' And He said to them, 'Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.' And they were unable to catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people and marveling at His answer, they became silent."...

Honor the Lord with Your Possessions
One Sunday a pastor told his congregation that the church needed some extra money for a special mission project. He asked the people to consider putting a little extra in the offering plate. He added that whoever gave the most that day would be able to pick three hymns in the worship service. When the offering plates were brought forward the pastor glanced down and noticed that someone had written a check for $1000. Excited, he immediately shared this news with the congregation and said he would like to thank personally the person who gave such a large gift. He asked who the donor was. A shy, elderly woman sitting in the back slowly raised her hand. The pastor asked her to come to the front of the church. She stood there nervously as the pastor praised her and then he asked her to pick out three hymns. Her eyes brightened as she looked over the congregation. Pointing to the three best looking men in the building, she said, "I'll take him and him and him!"
This morning I’m going to talk about that dreaded five letter word…tithe. Before you close your ears, I want you to consider a different way of looking at the tithe.
Imagine you're up on the 70th floor of the Empire State Building. Suddenly a man opens the window and says he's going to jump. You call out, "Stop. Don't do it." "Try to stop me and I'll take you with me."
Noting that the guy is 6-foot-5, you say, "No problem. Have a safe trip. Any last messages?" He says, "Let me tell you my troubles. My wife left me, my kids won't talk to me, I lost my job and my pet turtle died." After an hour of stories like this, you're so depressed you're ready to jump with him. Finally he turns to you and says, "Tell me - why should I go on living?"
What do you say? Suddenly you get a flash of inspiration. "Sir, close your eyes for a minute. Now I want you to imagine that you are blind. No colors, no sights of children playing, no fields of flowers, no sunset ... Now imagine that suddenly there's a miracle. You open your eyes and you can see. Are you going to jump ... or will you stick around a week to look around?" "I'd stick around for a week to see." "What happened to all the troubles?" "Ah, I guess they're not so bad. I can see."
I want us to close our eyes about tithing and then open them with a new outlook.
PROVERBS 3:9 TELLS US TO HONOR THE LORD WITH OUR SUBSTANCE. NOW WE USUALLY THINK MONEY, BUT SUBSTANCE MEANS MUCH MORE. IT REFERS TO EVERYTHING WE OWN, EVERYTHING WE HAVE UNDER OUR CONTROL. I AM HOPING YOU WILL PUT A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON A SUBJECT THAT USUALLY CAUSES PEOPLE TO SQUIRM IN THEIR SEATS, AND AVOID EYE CONTACT WITH THE PREACHER.
ACTS 27:9
Now when much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous because the Fast was already over, Paul advised them, saying, "Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives." Nevertheless the centurion was more persuaded by the helmsman and the owner of the ship than by the things spoken by Paul. And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised to set sail from there also, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete opening toward the southwest and northwest, and winter there. When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their desire, putting out to sea, they sailed close by Crete. But not long after, a tempestuous head wind arose, called Euroclydon. So when the ship was caught, and could not head into the wind, we let her drive. And running under the shelter of an island called Clauda, we secured the skiff with difficulty. When they had taken it on board, they used cables to undergird the ship; and fearing lest they should run aground on the Syrtis Sands, they struck sail and so were driven. And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship. On the third day we threw the ship's tackle overboard with our own hands. Now when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest beat on us, all hope that we would be saved was finally given up. But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, "Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss. And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, saying, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.' Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me. However, we must run aground on a certain island." Acts 27:9-26 (NKJV)
IF WE ARE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO HONOR GOD WITH OUR SUBSTANCE, WE MUST UNDERSTAND WHAT PAUL MEANT WHEN HE SAID "GOD, WHOSE I AM, WHOM ALSO I SERVE."
I think that most Christians don’t really understand what it means to really b

20130526 - Grace Summit Sermon - Unfair, God!
As we celebrate Memorial Day tomorrow, we are thankful for those who have served – both from our congregation and throughout the country – and for those families who have children who are service. Thank You for that. Father, we are grateful – we have hearts of praise – you have given us all we have – help us to be people of grace and to recognize that all we have has come from You and we should be grateful. As we begin this series on GRACE, help us to realize how blessed we are to know You. Jesus gave His life for me and saved me – and if that is all He ever gives me, it is enough. Help us to have that attitude.
I am going to read today’s passage – you can either read along or close your eyes and visualize it. Try to put yourself in the shoes of those who are hearing it for the first time. Imagine being the first to hear it – what are you hearing? Listen and think – what is He saying – not so much theologically, but how does it hit your heart?
Matthew 20: 20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 And after agreeing with the workers for the standard wage, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 When it was about nine o’clock in the morning, he went out again and saw others standing around in the marketplace without work. 4 He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and I will give you whatever is right.’ 5 So they went. When he went out again about noon and three o’clock that afternoon, he did the same thing. 6 And about five o’clock that afternoon he went out and found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why are you standing here all day without work?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go and work in the vineyard too.’ 8 When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the workers and give the pay starting with the last hired until the first.’ 9 When those hired about five o’clock came, each received a full day’s pay. 10 And when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more. But each one also received the standard wage. 11 When they received it, they began to complain against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last fellows worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us who bore the hardship and burning heat of the day.’ 13 And the landowner replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am not treating you unfairly. Didn’t you agree with me to work for the standard wage? 14 Take what is yours and go. I want to give to this last man the same as I gave to you. 15 Am I not permitted to do what I want with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
As you hear that story – what do you think? Not fair! If we are honest – that is what we think – it makes us uncomfortable – and that is the point of most parables! If you are not shaken by it, you only THINK you understand it! I’d like to explain all that is going on in the story and then we’ll look at some practical applications from it.
The landowner must be a person of some wealth.
The landowner goes down to the unemployment office – and there are people waiting there.
You had landowners, and some who owned shops - and day-laborers – the day-laborers would just hang around the market until someone would hire them for the day. He comes to an agreement – a denarius. This was standard fare for a day laborer – enough to pay for rent, food, and utilities, generally speaking. They were glad to work for 12 hours for a denarius.
About the third hour he goes out and finds more standing around – he doesn’t promise this group a day’s wage, rather, what is right/proper/fair – I will give you.
And what is amazing – they go, without a contract – without an agreement. This should tell us something about the landowner. He is trustworthy. He will do what is right and just. And they jump at the chance. There must be something about this landowner that indicates that they will get what they deserve.
And he goes out the 6th and 9th hours – and they agree to the same thing.
About the 11th hour – we have that phrase, don’t we – it comes from here – And he says to them – why have you been standing here idle all day long – because no one hired us. – and he says – go out into the vineyard too.
With the first group – a day’s wage, a day’s work. Second group – I’ll do what is right. This group – he says nothing about pay. He just says go out.
And the owner says to his foreman – wouldn’t the foreman normally be the one to go to the marketplace? It would normally be beneath the landowner’s reputation to go into the marketplace to find the laborers. This is kinda’ like the boss undercover guy tv show.
