How philosophy can save your life: Jules Evans at TEDxBreda
When Jules Evans was in his late teens, he started to be plagued by panic attacks, mood swings and other emotional problems. He eventually found help in the form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). He went to interview the inventors of CBT, and discovered they were directly inspired by ancient Greek philosophy. This started him on a five-year journey of discovery, in which he found out how life-transforming the ideas of ancient Greek philosophy can be. He met and interviewed people from many walks of life who claimed to have been greatly helped by ancient philosophy, including gangsters, astronauts, soldiers and politicians. Now, he passionately believes that the therapeutic ideas of ancient philosophy need to be rescued from the dusty museum cabinets of academia, and brought to as many people as possible, to help them improve their lives. Regarding Jules Evans Jules Evans is policy director at the Centre for the History of the Emotions at Queen Mary, University of London. He is also a journalist, has appeared on BBC 2′s Culture Show, on Radio 3 and 4, RTE-1, ABC Australia, and has written for The Times, Spectator, Wall Street Journal, Prospect and many other publications. His book, Philosophy for Life and Other Dangerous Situations, is being published in 19 countries, and was described as 'a revelation' by The Observer.- published: 09 Nov 2013

Hawking vs. Philosophy: Has Science Killed Philosophy?
Hawking vs. Philosophy: Has Science Killed Philosophy?
Stephen Hawking recently declared the death of philosophy. Is he right? Has science rendered philosophy obsolete? Should we be looking to science to answer the biggest questions, or are there areas of understanding that science cannot reach that philosophy can? What about epistemology and the role of philosophy of science to the progress of knowledge? Provocative biologist and author Lewis Wolpert, postmodern sociologist of science Steve Fuller and New Statesman Culture editor Jonathan Derbyshire investigate the limits of science and philosophy. "I fully agree with you about the significance and educational value of methodology as well as history and philosophy of science. So many people today — and even professional scientists — seem to me like someone who has seen thousands of trees but has never seen a forest. A knowledge of the historical and philosophical background gives that kind of independence from prejudices of his generation from which most scientists are suffering. This independence created by philosophical insight is — in my opinion — the mark of distinction between a mere artisan or specialist and a real seeker after truth." - Albert Einstein Hawking contra Philosophy http://philosophynow.org/issues/82/Hawking_contra_Philosophy- published: 10 Nov 2013

Tamar Gendler: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Politics and Economics
Tamar Gendler, Department of Philosophy Chair at Yale University, Cognitive Scientist Who gets what and who says so? These two questions underlie and inform every social arrangement from the resolution of schoolyard squabbles to the meta-structure of human societies. They are also the basis of political philosophy. Professor Tamar Gendler uses the work of three titans of the discipline, Thomas Hobbes, John Rawls, and Robert Nozick, as a lens to guide us through the taut debate about the role of government in society, asking "Will we embrace the radical state of nature or will we surrender our freedom to the leviathan of the state?" Stories of Philosophies
Stories of Philosophies ( www.histoiresdephilosophies.com ) is an animated series featuring famous philosophers, both early and contemporary, as main characters.
Each episode is composed of two parts,
each of which presents a philosopher reacting to the presence of an object in the manner of his well-known philosophical vision.
Following the cartooning tradition and
in order to stick to what's essential, the black line drawings move accompanied by simple sound effects, in a white universe remini-
scent of a virgin page – a space where ideas take shape.
The intention is to create spiritual and delightful playlets with several levels of depth and understanding. We would like to both explain and provoke interest in the view-
points of the world's most famous philosophers – for viewers of all ages.

Jesus, the Easter Bunny, and Other Delusions: Just Say No!
This presentation was given by Dr. Peter Boghossian of Portland State University on January 27, 2012. In this talk, sponsored by The Freethinkers of Portland State University and published by philosophynews.com, Dr. Boghossian argues that faith-based processes are unreliable and unlikely to lead one to the truth. Since our goal as knowers is to have more true beliefs than false ones, faith, as a process for getting to the truth, should be abandoned in favor of other, more reliable processes. The talk was followed by a question and answer session from the audience.
