7 Celebrities You Didn't Know Filed For Bankruptcy
More Celebrity News ►► http://bit.ly/SubClevverNews Singers Who've Been Arrested►► http://bit.ly/1jFBf55 The life of a celebrity is usually that glamor and luxury, but for some, that isn't necessarily the case. This is ClevverNews with a shocking celeb bankruptcy roundup. That's right, believe it or not, there are a number of stars who get in a little over their head financially, and have filed for bankruptcy. Sure, there are celebs who are pretty much known for their money troubles -- Spencer and Heidi, or TLC anyone? -- But there are a few stars who went bankrupt that might surprise you. First up: the lovable Drake Bell. The former Nickelodeon star reportedly filed in February 2014, claiming he's $581,000 in debt. And it's reported he earns $2,820 a month, but lists his monthly expenses at a whopping $18,771. Excessive. He earned about $408,000 in 2012 -- but only $14,099 in 2013. What a difference a year can make, right? However Drake's financial troubles seem pretty manageable when you compare them to boxer Mike Tyson's debt. Yes, the former boxer filed for bankruptcy back in 2003, and during a hearing, it was revealed that he was -- wait for it -- $27 million in debt. That's just careless- how does that even happen? But sadly, it isn't always the stars' fault when they come into major debt. Take for instance the next person on our list, former Gossip Girl star Kelly Rutherford. We're sure you know the actress as Serena's well-off mother, but thanks to a nasty divorce and bitter custody battle in real life, Kelly filed for bankruptcy in June 2013. In fact, when Kelly filed, she owed nearly $1.5 million in just legal fees. Yikes! And speaking of legal fees, Oscar winning actress Kim Basinger found herself in a similar situation. Alec Baldwin's hot ex-wife was forced to file for bankruptcy back in 1993, after she backed out of a movie project. The studio sued her for damages, and she had to pay them to the tune of $8.1 million. Kim wasn't able to pay the hefty settlement, so she filed for bankruptcy. Shouldn't Kim just have done that movie? Next on our list, most shockingly, is Donald Trump. Yes the self-made billionaire might be sitting pretty hairpiece now, but before the dough started rolling in, he was forced to file on at least two separate occasions. He's going OKAY now, as his net worth is estimated at about $2 billion. Next, is unlucky former pop star Aaron Carter. The younger brother of Nick Carter battled some addiction issues a few years ago, and is back on track in that aspect of his life, but financially, he's still in some hot water. Apparently, he listed his assets at about $8,000, but owes over $31,000 on just an American Express bill AND owes over $2.2 million on top of that. However, he's been touring and working on new music, so maybe a comeback is in the works? Speaking of a comeback, the final person on our list has found herself having money troubles, but has been able to overcome them. R&B; singer Toni Braxton -- who broke onto the scene back in 1996 thanks to her sexy megahit "You're Makin' Me High" -- filed for bankruptcy two years later. And once again, Toni was forced to file in 2010, but it's being reported she recently bought a $3 million mansion in Calabasas, so we guess she was able to work everything out. So we gotta know, which stars' money troubles surprised you the most? Also if you liked this- you should check out our list of celebs who've been behind bars! Detroit Files for Bankruptcy
Detroit Files for Bankruptcy
From VOA Learning English, this is the Economics Report. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing had to report some bad news recently. He said Detroit was seeking bankruptcy protection. The move would give the city court protection from creditors. The decision to declare bankruptcy is an effort to restructure and reduce debt. It comes at a difficult time for Detroit. In March, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder named Kevyn Orr, a bankruptcy expert, to oversee the city's financial problems. Detroit has been struggling to reduce a budget deficit of more than $300 million. In addition, the city's long-term debt has increased to at least $18 billion. Detroit's problems have grown over many years. Michigan State University professor Eric Scorsone says the city depended too much on one industry: automobile manufacturing. Jobs with car makers were a big reason why Detroit was one of the country's largest cities half a century ago. In the 1950s, it had a population of about 1.8 million people. Today the number is down to less than 800,000. Robin Boyle is a professor of urban planning at Wayne State University. He says, over the years, many Detroit residents moved to areas outside the city or even left the state. That hurt Detroit's ability to invest in itself. It is rare for a large American city of seek bankruptcy protection. In 1975, New York City came close before the federal government agreed to provide money. Detroit, however, is the largest city to seek bankruptcy. Now, a federal judge is to consider Detroit's request. One of the main issues is what to do about the retirement pay of city workers. Currently, there are many more retired workers than those paying into the pension system. For VOA Learning English, I'm Alex Villarreal.- published: 21 Aug 2013
