The Pace Report: "Re-Bird" The Joe Lovano Interview
In a career that spans over 40 years, saxophonist Joe Lovano is now one of the important jazz musicians of his generation. Throughout his career he continues to bring the music and it’s roots to the light by playing the music of the deans and innovators of the music ranging from John Coltrane to Ornette Coleman. Joe’s 22nd disc “Bird Songs” is paying tribute to the late Charlie Parker, one of the innovators of be-bop. Parker, hailed as “Bird,” was one of the architects and founding fathers of the style of jazz music that segued into existence as the big-bands of the 1920’s to the 40’s became a thing of the past as musicians were playing smaller trio and quartet ensembles. Lovano goes for the jugular and incorporates some of his new music along with some of Parker’s standards with this group Us Five.
Joe’s current group Us Five features two drummers including Otis Brown III and Francisco Mela, James Weidman on piano, and Esperanza Spaulding on bass. The group has recorded two recordings together and have been a unit for close to four years now.
The Cleveland, Ohio native developed a passion for jazz through his father who was a musician. As a child, Joe listened to and saw many of the jazz greats and decided to pursue music as a career when he attended middle school. It was his father Tony Lovano that taught him the basics in becoming a professional musician. Things like how to the standards and how to become a learned and diverse musician so he could always find work. Upon graduating high school, Joe attended the famed Berklee College of Music in Boston playing and studying under the masters like Mel Lewis, Woody Herman, Gary Burton, Herb Pomeroy, and Dr. Lonnie Smith.
Over the years he’s recorded and backed musicians like Paul Motian, John Scofield, Dave Liebman, Michael Brecker, Bill Frisell, McCoy Tyner, SF Jazz Collective, Shades of Jazz, and Hank Jones.
Recently Joe took part of the inaugural International Jazz Day Concert at the General Assembly at the United Nations in New York City. Spearheaded by pianist and educator Herbie Hancock, the event was a cultural event that brought jazz musicians from all over the world to play America’s only original art-form to music fans all over the world. Joe took the stage with Terence Blanchard, Chaka Khan, Richard Bona, and Danilo Perez.
Joe is about to embark on a European and American tour with Us Five this spring and throughout the summer. For upcoming info in club and festival dates please visit him on the web at www.joelovano.com or www.facebook.com/joelovano.

The Pace Report: Odean Pope Saxophone Choir Featuring Special Guest Saxophonist Joe Lovano
Saxophonist Odean Pope’s vision of a musical saxophone choir reminiscent of his growing up in the church was and still isn’t a easy feat. The Odean Pope Saxophone Choir has been a innovative and striking ensemble that swings just as good as a big band; but funkier. The choir consists of nine saxophones and was founded in 1977 while he was a session and sideman living between New York City and Philadelphia. Their debut album “The Saxophone Shop” put the choir on the map and tours constantly overseas. Odean writes and arranges all the horn sections, something he learned as the road manger and saxophonist for drummer Max Roach for well over 20 years.
Odean began playing professionally as a teenager playing at the famous Uptown Theater, one of the major black theaters during the 1950’s and 60’s. Although he grew up listening to Rhythm and Blues, his passion was jazz music. John Coltrane recommended he replace him after he left to play with Miles Davis. The two were very close and still to this day, Odean credits his hard work ethic and practicing to Trane.
Eventually he felt he needed to develop and create his own style so he studied under the great Kenny Clarke at The Paris Conservatory for Music. Later he studied under pianists Ray Bryant and Hassan Ibn Ali. But it was his time with the legendary Max Roach where he became the great soloist and musician he is today.
Odean is one of the most underrated saxophonists, arrangers and band leaders in the business. His music and arrangements pop out at you when you listen to them live. Almost like the powerful Thad Jones arrangements he did with Mel Lewis during the 1960’s into the 70’s. Pope’s vision, along with the understanding of being a band leader that shares the stage with his musicians, gives him an edge in music that hasn't been heard on record or live in quite sometime.
His latest disc “Odean’s List” features saxophonists Walter Blanding and James Carter. These guys give Odean the powerhouse drive of solos that most listeners will die for. Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts gives his arrangements the punch and drive that brings out all of the musicians on the disc.
Recently, he played the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York with special guests Ravi Coltrane and Joe Lovano.
