They are called "accidents" - from the Amtrack derailment to a toddler killed by a crumbling building facade. But Brian's first guest sees these incidents as often the predictable, preventable consequence of a poor safety culture. He is psychologist Steve Simon, who coined the term "safety culture" 30 years ago.
Then, 11 Afghan police officers were sentenced to a year in jail for standing by as a mob killed Farkhunda Malikzaka after she was wrongfully accused in burning a Qur'an. Others were charged in participating. The killing drew protests from Afghan women standing up against violence towards women. Does this represent a broader feminist activism in the Muslim world? To discuss via Skype in Istanbul, Turkey, Zainab Salbi, founder of Women for Women International and author of, "If You Knew Me You Would Care."
Next, the city is dotted with more food trucks than ever. Now, the city council and a firm called "Move Systems" plans to give street vendors eco-friendly food carts. These next guests say the city could be doing more to help these small business people. Part of the Urban Justice Center, Sean Basinksi's "Street Vendor Project" advocates for street vendors. Also to discuss this, street vendor Mohammed Attia.
And finally, New York's Penn Station is the busiest and most congested transportation hub in North America. The demolition of the original station in 1963 gave birth to the city's preservation movement. A billion dollar project underway will transform the Farley Post Office across Eight Avenue into Moynihan Station. But here's a plan to recreate the original Penn. To explain, Richard W. Cameron, principal designer at Atelier & Co. in Brooklyn and one of the original founders of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art.

The campaign is LondonIsChanging.org and its creator, Rebecca Ross, a scholar at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design joins Brian on Skype from London.
Then, Manhattan prep schools are teaching their students about 'white privilege' in diversity and identity seminars. To discuss this provocative new lesson plan, educational consultant on diversity, Derrick Gay, and New School professor of history, Natalia Mehlman Petrzela.
Next, according to the "National Students Clearinghouse," 60% of community college students are still working on their degrees six years in. In this Public Intellectual segment, in which we explore new research with the power to change minds and public policy, a new study commissioned by CUNY evaluates one its programs designed to put more resources and attention towards community college students. The results may explain why the program has been highlighted by the White House. To discuss, Michael Weiss, a senior associate with non-profit think tank MDRC, and CUNY University Dean for Student Success Initiatives, Donna Linderman.
And finally, many of New York's sewer caps, or manhole covers, have the words, "Made in India" spelled out in big font. So one visual anthropologist went to India and spent a month with the workers who toil to make these heavy discs in conditions that could shock most Americans. To discuss, Natasha Raheja, filmmaker of Cast in India and student in the sociocultural anthropology department and media program at New York University.

Then, in his 2015 State of the City address, Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke of building a citywide ferry system to help people get to work from neighborhoods like Redhook, Soundview and the Rockaways. The idea echoed a recent report showing a link between access to good transit and employment. First, a new campaign seeks to make guns child-proof, theft-proof, and Congress-proof. The group behind it is not anti-gun, but for safer guns and safer gun marketing. To explain, Reverend Patrick O-Connor, lead paster of the First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, and Rabbi Joel Mosbacher, campaign-cochair and leader of Mahwah, New Jersey's Beth Haverim Shir Shalom Congregation.
Then, medical marijuana is legal in 24 states and the District of Columbia. New York will soon follow. But will the pot be easy to obtain? How effective is the drug? These and other questions, with Richard Lewis, co-author of "Pot Luck: Why Marijuana is Today's Medicine," and Gabriel Sayegh, managing director of policy and campaigns in the New York State office of the Drug Policy Alliance.
Next, public health ads now often involve fear-tactics. The ads can be controversial, such as when targeted groups are stigmatized. New research analyses the social impacts of these ads by using Bloomberg-era New York City as a case study. To discuss is Amy Fairchild, professor of socio-medical sciences at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and author of "Risky Business: New York City's Experience With Fear-Based Public Health Campaigns," published in the journal, Health Affairs.
Finally, Greenwich Village was home to a thriving folk music scene in the 1950s and 1960s. Coming from a faded agricultural America, the music got tangled up in the Civil Rights Movement. This history will be explored in an upcoming exhibit, "Folk City: New York and the Folk Music Revival," from June 17 to November 29 at the Museum of the City of New York. To talk about it with images, curator and author of a "Folk City" book, Stephen Petrus. And thoughts from musician Amy Regan, who closes the hour with a music performance.

First, as the holiday season approaches, we check up on children in distressed parts of the world. In Western Africa at least 3,700 children have been orphaned by Ebola. In the Mid-East, more than 1.5 million kids are living as refugees from the Syrian civil war. The United Nations Children Fund plays a central role. To discuss, Afshan Khan, director of UNICEF office of emergency programs; on Skype from Beirut, Luciano Calestini, UNICEF deputy representative in Lebanon; and Sheldon Yett, UNICEF representative for Liberia.
Then, actors reenact their real gentrification-related situations and invite a Washington Heights audience onto the stage. Some footage from "Pardon Our Appearance" and a discussion with People's Theatre Project co-executive and director Mino Lora and show facilitator, Esdras Santana.
Next, Latinos are a third of New York City’s population but make up 12 percent of the government heads appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio. There are also no city agencies with a prominently Latino staff. The mayor has recently taken some action. Here to discuss, Ramon Jimenez, attorney and former attorney general candidate, and Lucky Rivera, founder of Boricuas for a Positive Image.
And then, the 2015 New York City Youth Poet Laureate, Crystal Valentine. Winner of an October 30th competition organized by Urban Word NYC and the Voter Finance Board, the youth poet laureate is tasked with engaging the city's young people in civic life. Valentine discusses and shares two poems: "A Voter's Armageddon" and "Evaluating Black Privilege".

First, most U.S. prisoners who are released are rearrested within five years, according to the National Institute of Justice. This can be attributed to a lacking connection to key resources for help out of this cycle. Now, there's an app for that, called "Angel's List". To discuss, Angel's List founder and Fellow at the Halcyon Incubator, Brian Ferguson.
Then, a controversial Business Improvement District proposed along Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights and Corona, Queens, has residents worried about gentrification as a side effect. Now, urban ecologies graduated students at Parson The New School of Design have come up with an alternative to the plan. To discuss, lecturer Quilian Riano, and student Mateo Fernandez-Muro.
Next, a group of transit advocates has a vision that would turn the length of 42nd Street in Midtown into a car-free pedestrian strip with an above-ground light-rail instead of buses. We'll see what this could look like with designs from the top winners of a recent competition in Architect Magazine. To explain, chair of Vision 42, Roxanne Warren, and architectural and design consultant, Peter Brassard.
And finally, in our Public Intellectual segment, a large study with experiments in six countries takes a fresh look at micro-credit, or small loans designed to help those in impoverished neighborhoods. The study advanced the growing notion that micro-loans are not the magic bullet they have been touted as but do some good. To discuss, lead author Abhijit Banerjee, the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at MIT and director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab.

First, in light of the recent protests and riots in Baltimore, Maryland, is it time for a new Kerner Commission? The commission, created under the Lyndon administration in the 1960s, created a report summing up factors in the racially provoked riots of that era. The report pointed to police confrontations as key factors in the buildup to civil unrest. To discuss the then and now, former NAACP council and long-time civil rights attorney, James Meyerson, and sociology and black studies professor at City College, R. L'Heureux Lewis-McCoy.
Then, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is in the presidential race and Hillary Clinton talking "inequality." Progressive talk is hot right now. But is the left on the rise? To discuss, founder and executive director of the Working Families Party, Dan Cantor.
Next, big data is becoming a key resource for farmers, as demand for food is set to rise dramatically with the growing population. But not all farmers are enthused. To discuss, Douglas Hackney, president of Enterprise Group LTD., and Kip Tom, member and CEO of Tom Farms and president of CereServ Inc.
Finally, work hours don't always add up to happiness. But for married, American men, more work hours means more happiness, compared with their Latin American counterparts, according to a new study from the Journal of Happiness Studies. To discuss, Rubia Valente, research associate at the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences at the University of Dallas at Texas.
