Birsa Munda (1875–1900) was a tribal leader and a folk hero, belonging to the Munda tribe who was behind the Millenarian movement that rose in the tribal belt of modern day Bihar, and Jharkhand during the British Raj, in the late 19th century making him an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement.
Birsa Munda is named with great respect as one of the freedom fighters in the Indian struggle for independence against British colonialism. His achievements in the freedom struggle became even greater considering he accomplished this before his 25th year.
Birsa's devotion to his people was such that he was almost revered as God by his followers. By the time he was in his 20s, his activities in the tribal areas of Jharkhand state (earlier Bihar) had already begun to worry the British establishment to a considerable extent. He was finally caught by the British on 3 February 1900 when he was only 25 years old. He died soon afterwards under mysterious circumstances on 9 June 1900 in Ranchi Jail.
Lalu Prasad Yadav (Devanāgarī: लालू प्रसाद यादव) is an Indian politician from Bihar. He was the Minister of Railways from 2004 to 2009 in the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, and the President of the Rashtriya Janata Dal political party. He is a Member of Parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha from the Saran constituency in Bihar.
He entered politics during his student days at Patna University, and he was elected a member of the Lok Sabha in 1977 as a Janata party candidate. At the age of 29 he was one of its youngest members of Parliament.
He is famous for his charismatic leadership and mass appeal, and has been criticized for caste-based politics. and the corruption cases against him.
Yadav served as the Chief Minister of Bihar from 1990 till 1997, when he resigned following escalating corruption charges in the Fodder Scam. From 1997 to 2005, with brief interruptions, his wife Rabri Devi was the Chief Minister. Her political opponents often accused her as having served as his "surrogate." His tenure as Chief Minister of the state has been criticized for lawlessness and has been termed as the Jungle Raj.
Hemant Soren is a deputy chief minister of Jharkhand state of India. He is a leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, and son of Shibu Soren, one of the former Chief Ministers of Jharkhand state..
Sudesh Mahto, a prominent leader of the AJSU Party, is an Indian politician. He was inducted into the cabinet of Arjun Munda's ministry and took over as one of the Cabinet Ministers of Jharkhand state on 29 December 2009. He is currently one of the two Deputy Chief Ministers of the state, and also holds the charge of a number of ministries including Minister for Rural Development, Panchayti Raj & N.R.E.P. (including Special Division), Rural Works, Water Resources, Forest & Environment, Arts Culture Sports & Youth Affairs.
He represents the Silli Vidhan Sabha constituency.
Madhu Koda (born January 6, 1971) is an Indian politician who was Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2006 to 2008. He was sworn in as the fifth Chief Minister of Jharkhand on September 18, 2006, and remained in office until he resigned on 23 August 2008; he was succeeded by Shibu Soren. He had eight ministers in his cabinet. Koda is the third independent legislator to assume the office of chief minister of an Indian state, including Biswanath Das in Orissa in 1971 and S. F. Khonglam in Meghalaya in 2002.
Koda is presently in jail after multiple bail pleas have been rejected. However, only a tiny fraction of the Rs 4000 crores (USD 800 mn) graft money allegedly amassed by him has been recovered.
Madhu Koda was born in Patratu, West Singhbhum. His father is Rasika Koda, a tribal farmer, who lives in Patahatu. His father wanted Koda to have a "normal life" and remain a farmer or iron worker, but after experiencing corruption in the iron industry, he eventually began a career in politics.
Koda is married to Geeta, who contested the Jagannathpur assembly seat on a Jharkhand Navnirman Morcha ticket.
