Public Lecture Series: 'Treading out technology ...' - Visiting Professor Alan Dix
Cardiff Metropolitan University - Public & Professorial Lecture Series Visiting Professor Alan Dix "Treading out technology: exploring the edges during a thousand mile walk around Wales" April 2013. Straight after this lecture Alan will be walking around Wales following the Wales Coast Path that opened last May and Offa's Dyke long distance path up the borders. This is partly a personal journey reconnecting with the country of his childhood, but also a technological journey investigating the IT needs of the walker and the local communities through which he will pass. Some of this will be mundane technologically speaking, but hopefully transformative in practice. However, he also expects to be pushed to the limits cartographically and theoretically. One set of challenges will be related to the Semantic Web linking data together from many separate sources; another will be related to the areas of limited or non-existent mobile signal -- being part of global network whilst disconnected. At the heart of the walking experience is the map. It has never been easier to use high-quality digital maps with Google Maps mash-ups and the Ordnance Survey's Open Data. However, local town plans and hand-made maps, such as the Cardigan knitted map, are rarely the standard maps of the atlas; instead they embody local knowledge and community interests -- often quirky, always engaging. A commitment to use where appropriate these non-standard local maps symbolises a broader political and social question. In an age of global communications, those on the geographic, social and economic margins can often end up further marginalised. Can we appropriate the global network to benefit those on the edge, whilst still valuing roots of locality?- published: 29 Oct 2013

X-Men: First Class Title Sequence
Inspired by classic Sixties movie titles and prompted by John Struan of Super Punch fame, I've built a 1960s style title sequence for the upcoming X-Men: First Class film.
Set during the midst of the Cuba Missile Crisis, X-Men: First Class tells the story of the first team coming together, before they would become the heroes and villains we know from the original X-Men Trilogy.
This sequence was designed to give a very brief primer on the time period, the setting, as well as show the relationships of the characters in this film, as they are very different from the previous movies and audiences shouldn't be confused as to why Professor X and Magneto, enemies in the original trilogy, are the best of friends in this prequel.
Super Punch held a contest redesigning the posters for the film, which played it safe by sticking very close to the correlation to the original trilogy, and winding up rather mundane compared to the slick trailer rife with espionage, red fear, and 60s hair. Several people were quick to make posters in the Mod, Saul Bass, and James Bond style that I had in mind, so it was decided that I'd make a title sequence instead.
And yes, that music is a very melancholic rendition of the 90s cartoon theme song.
Please visit SecretUndergroundHeadquarters.com and SuperPunch.blogspot.com for more awesomeness.
Special thanks to Jessica Heaton, the World's Greatest Robot Girl.

Sensory Overload (Interacting with Autism Project)
© 2012
Some people with autism have difficulty processing intense, multiple sensory experiences at once. This animation gives the viewer a glimpse into sensory overload, and how often our sensory experiences intertwine in everyday life.
Created as part of Mark Jonathan Harris' and Marhsa Kinder's "Interacting with Autism." Coming in January 1st 2013, IWA is a three-year transmedia project funded by the federal Agency for Health Research and Quality (AHRQ). University Professor Marsha Kinder, the Executive Director of the Labyrinth Project at USC, and Mark Harris are heading a team of filmmakers and artists working to build an interactive, video intensive website that will focus on the best available treatments for autism.

The Origin of Mass
This experimental video was created as a final project for my procedural animation course at Savannah College of Art and Design. http://scad.edu It was inspired by demoscene and sub-atomic particle collision images. The name comes from the Higgs Boson prticle which is expected to provide a scientific foundation for the origin of mass in the universe.
My special thanks goes to professor Ronald Bernard and Puryx aka Christian Rønde who let me use his music for the soundtrack originally created for a demo called Nucleophile http://bit.ly/aErBrg
You should visit prof. Bernard's website if you want to see some amazing student work:

Public Domain (Domínio Público) - English Subtitles
We started filming this documentary independently over one year ago with very little funding, which we obtained by throwing a party. The crew waived their salary and we received equipment free of charge. During this period we roamed through the communities of Vidigal, Vila Autódromo, Providência, the port region of Rio and the surroundings of the Maracanã stadium, collecting images, interviewing residents, participating in their meetings, debates and conflicts. These communities have been recognized as some of the most affected by real estate speculation, a phenomenon in which housing prices are increasing due to preparation for the major world events to be hosted in Rio: the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016. As a result of the rising prices, Rio residents, primarily the poorest residents are being forced to move to distant suburbs that lack infrastructure and services and are dominated by heavily armed militia.
We then began to investigate were these billions of Brazilian reais directed towards the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics are being directed. It is quite clear that a large sum of this money will come from tax payers’ pockets, only to be used for the financial gain of a small group of contractors, politicians, bank owners and businessmen involved in these events. The legacy left for the benefit of the majority of the population will be minimal. And worst of all, many communities are being removed illegally in areas of great real estate interest, and the residents are relocated to distant suburbs that lack infrastructure and are dominated by a heavily armed militia.
In addition, we have acquired images of UPP (Pacifying Police Unit) in Mangueira, and the Almeão Complex cable car, through our collaborators. We also interviewed professor Carlos Vainer of the Institute of Research and Urban and Regional Planning of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IPPUR/UFRJ), an expert in the field of mega events and state and federal deputies Marcelo Freixo and Romario. In the case of the latter we were obliged to visit Brasilia and took the opportunity to film the nation’s capital and the construction being done at Mané Garrincha stadium.
Do you believe change is possible, but you’re not sure how to help? Collaborate with us! The script is not complete, but together we can rewrite the end of this story. Your donation will help us produce and share this information, helping society to decide its own future. We need 90,000 reais (approximately 45,000 USD), a minimal sum to film extensively and finalize our film, publicize on the internet, and to exhibit the film in the streets, parks and communities through Cine Ataque, translated as “Film Attack,” We believe our film can create world wide awareness to these deplorable acts being committed against the Brazilian people. Together we can change this reality. Participate!!!
