HQ Post Disco-Quiet Storm - Someone - El DeBarge - 1986
From 1986. HQ Quality. Album: "El DeBarge"; R&B; Post-Disco Urban Pop Quiet Storm Duke Ellington / Tennyson / Billy Towne / [Jay Graydon] From allmusic.com, album review by Jason Elias: This is the first solo album from the talented writer/producer/singer El DeBarge. Released in 1986, the self-titled album was the expected next step. After recording four albums with his siblings, the success of the 1985 hit singles "Rhythm of the Night" and "Who's Holding Donna Now" all but swung the doors open for a solo career. While the setup and idea are still exciting on paper, El DeBarge is a disappointment. That being said, there are some high points here. Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager's "Love Always" has one of Bacharach's most challenging '80s melodies. DeBarge handles the sorrowful lyrics with great pacing and delivery. While a little sappy, "Someone" attains enough momentum to be poignant. "Lost Without Her Love" offered DeBarge's best vocal of the album and has a pitch-perfect '80s L.A. pop arrangement. Unfortunately DeBarge's hits from earlier efforts seemed to point him in an odd direction. The abysmal "Who's Johnny" might have caused many to break camp with him altogether. The majority of the other tracks just don't do anything to enliven the product or accentuate his voice. The fact that DeBarge didn't have a hand in producing or writing the songs all but made this ho-hum from the start.- published: 14 Feb 2014

From 1982. HQ Quality. Album: "Victory"; R&B; Disco Funk Quiet Storm Smooth Soul Urban Soul Contemporary R&B; From allmusic.com, album review by Ron Wynn: Another early Midnight Star album, which came close to breaking them as a hit act. The title cut and "Hot Spot" both charted, and the Calloway brothers were close to finding the right mix of uptempo and dance/funk/novelty tracks to ballads, and also perfecting their productions, arrangements, and compositions.- published: 11 Jan 2014

Album: "Jonathan Butler"; R&B; Post-Disco Crossover Jazz Jazz-Funk Smooth Jazz Contemporary R&B; Urban From allmusic.com, album review by Ron Wynn: The album that made Butler a star. The sweeping ballads, catchy uptempo, dance-oriented hits, and multi-tracked overdubs and background vocalists helped make his music a staple on late '80s Urban Contemporary radio. There is little jazz influence and even less jazz content on this release, but Butler does display a strong, effective singing voice.- published: 24 Jan 2014

HQ Disco-Funk-Urban - In the Raw - The Whispers - 1982
From 1982. HQ Quality. Album: "Love Is Where You Find It"; R&B; Disco Funk Post-Disco Soul Urban Contemporary R&B; Glen Barbee / Dana Meyers / Charmaine Elaine Sylvers From allmusic.com: Released after This Kind of Lovin', Love Is Where You Find It finds the group continuing its hitmaking style and boasts the production work of Leon F. Sylvers III and the Solar sound. While the group's albums were never necessities, like the Temptations or to a lesser extent the Dramatics, the worth of the ballads and dance tracks often made the Whispers worth seeking out. Love Is Where You Find It is no exception. The album's biggest hits -- the polished and kinetic "In the Raw" and "Emergency" -- quickly joined the pantheon of Whispers dance classics. The near-brilliant "Turn Me Out" arguably beats them both for sheer sonic value and the witty lyrics. Unlike many of the Whispers' albums of the time, the ballads here diminish the set. The radio staple "Say Yes" may be too smooth and cloying even for Whispers devotees. Love Is Where You Find It isn't an especially strong album, but "Turns Me Out" makes it worth looking for.- published: 06 Jan 2014

HQ Post-Disco - Number One (Instrumental 12" Version) - Patrice Rushen - 1982
From 1982. HQ Quality. Album: "Straight from the Heart"; R&B; Contemporary R&B; Post-Disco Quiet Storm Patrice Rushen From allmusic.com, album review by Andy Kellman: An early-'80s jazz-pop-R&B; synthesis as durable and pleasing as any other, Straight from the Heart was Patrice Rushen's most successful album, at least from a sales standpoint: it peaked at number 14 on the pop chart, 25 slots higher than 1980's Pizzazz. Still working with a core group of associates -- including Freddie Washington, Charles Mims, Paul M. Jackson, and Marlo Henderson (along with a still young Gerald Albright) -- that went back to her earlier Elektra albums, the material here is as slick as ever, but not at the expense of lighter rhythms or less memorable melodies. Much of the album's popularity can be attributed to the club hit "Forget Me Nots," Rushen's most-known single -- a breezy, buoyant mixture of handclaps, fingersnaps, twisting bass, and Rushen's typically blissful (and not overplayed) electric piano, not to mention the incorporation of a bad bass-and-percussion breakdown. (If you were born after the mid-'70s or so, you'd be more likely to recognize the song as the basis of Will Smith's "Men in Black.") Beyond a forgettable ballad or two, the only disappointment is the Brenda Russell collaboration on "Breakout!," where rock affectations (gnarling electric guitar, grimacing vocal tactics that suit neither Rushen nor Russell) damage what could've been a bigger hit. "Remind Me," despite not being released as a single, is a sweet and low-slung groove that has been sampled and interpolated by no less than a dozen significant rap and R&B; songs -- including Faith Evans' "Fallin' in Love," Notorious B.I.G.'s "Unbelievable," MoKenStef's "He's Mine," and Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s "I Need You Tonight." But it's not like anything about this album requires that kind of validation. [Rhino's 1996 reissue adds the 12" versions of all three singles, including seven very replayable minutes of "Forget Me Nots," as well as two single edits.]- published: 24 Jan 2014
