Bharat Ek Khoj - Episode 18 - Kalidasa - Part 1
Nehru cited traditions that Kalidasa lived during the reign of the Chandragupta ll Vikramaditya of the Gupta dynasty. Vikramaditya came rested on the literary and cultural brilliance of his court where he collected some of the most famous writers, artist and musicians, the 'nine gems' of the imperial court. As one of the gems, Kalidasa was among the fortunate who experienced life's beauty and tenderness more than its rough edges. His writing reviled this love of life and a passion for natures beauty. In our times Mohan Rakesh have scripted the play Ashadh Ka Ek Din on Kalidasas life in his native village where he thrived early in the romantic companion ship of beautiful mallika. A lovers tryst on the river front is seen as disturbed by a deer-cub short by a hunter, who turn out to be aware of kalidasas poetic prowess. The kings messenger calling the genius to join Ujjain royal court soon arrives and a reluctant mallika bids him adieu. The lovelorn poet writs his long poem meghadutam (the cloud messenger) where a lover made captive and separated from his beloved, ask a cloud, during a rainy season, to cary his message desperate longing to her at Alkapuri, crossing over hills and dales, lakes and rivers, dense forests and roaming deer. Kalidasa in real life, is now confeered royalty under the title 'Matri Gupta' his new princes wife Priyangumanjari, pays a visit to Malika's village out of curiosity-but the indignant Mallika spurns all offers of royal help, now sure that kalidasa would never return. Meanwhile, kalidasa move on his magnum opus, the play Abhijnanam Shukantalam presented here blinding dialogue with full-throated Naty sangeet (dramatic Songs) inspired by kirloskars Marathi musical Shakuntala and sung with gusto by the protagonists to take dramatic action forward. The king Dushanta comes hunting to a forest fair there is the hermitage of the saga canva. The king is prohibited from hunting the hermitage deer, but is offered hospitality bu the sagas beautiful foster-daughter Shakunlala in no time the king falls hermit girl reciprocated by the latter and encouraged by companions Anasuya and Pryamvada . after a brief interlude of sweet romancing they get married. On Kalidasa Nehru court approvingly the American scholar, Ryder Kalidasa understood in the 5th century what Europe did not learn until 19 th ...that the world was not made for man, that man reaches his full stature only as he realizes the dignity and the worth of life that is not human. That Kalidasa seized this truth is a magnificent tribute to his intellectual power, a quality quite as necessary to great poetry as perfection of form.- published: 25 Feb 2014

The Absent Lover (5min excerpts)
The Absent Lover, winner of 3 major awards at the 2009 Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards, India, is a theatre production about loss and rediscovery, is inspired by a 5th century Indian play (Vikramoorvishyam) by Sanskrit poet-dramatist Kalidasa.
A King (the Earthly king, Pururuvas) has lost his beloved wife (the Celestial nymph-Queen Urvashi) in the forest. It is a wild and stormy night. As the King struggles through the forest, he encounters strange and wonderful manifestations of nature. His ordeal becomes a metaphor, an intense crucible of self-examination. Through pain and longing, he journeys towards redemption and true love.
The Absent Lover is a mythical journey where two unlikely cultures meet (Earthly and Heavenly). In order to understand each other, they have to enter a realm of fantasy, and lose each other, sometimes confused by their own reality, to arrive at a new way of understanding each other. English and French (with Sanskrit as the original source of inspiration) are the chosen cultures of conflict and love placed within an ancient Indian story in modern times. The dynamic play between movement, music (traditional and modern), text (original translation and contemporary) and storytelling amongst these cultures leads to the search of something intimate missing – absent, only to discover a new expression– a fresh perspective – a new culture.
The original script, music, design and direction are all about the missing links in communication within one’s culture. What if I didn’t understand the language or recognize the gestures of a movement? What else can I choose to pay attention to? In very rare circumstances a true sophisticate may understand all language systems – verbal, motion and environment. But the truth is, that there is always something ‘absent’ that we chase as in the production. The elements come from a contemporary aesthetic, yet its roots emerge from the very thread of ancient ritual and vocabulary.
Something familiar has been rendered unfamiliar because we have shifted it.

Shakuntala - Kapila Venu
Shakuntala - after she has been rejected by the king, who earlier seduced her and made her pregnant. Now he has denied that he ever knew her, a questionable 'memory loss'.
Kapila Venu, is playing this role from the Kuttiyatam play by Kalidasa. Kuttiyatam is the oldest Sanskrit theatre form, dating back earlier than 2,000 years.
This video recorded by Margaret Fabrizio in 2007 at Natana Kairali in Irinjalakuda, Kerala, India.

MARAKATA RAJA RAJESHWARI TEMPLE HISTORY
JAYA GURU DATTA
THIS IS GIRI VIJAYAWADA VISIT THE SRI MARAKATA RAJA RAJESHWARI TEMPLE IN PATAMATA VIJAYAWADA
The unique feature of this temple is that the idol of Mother Goddess is carved out of Green Aventurine/Emerald (MARAKATA). This is the first of its kind in the World. The colour of this stone relates to the colour of Mother Goddess. Kalidasa referred to Mother Goddess as “Marakata Syama” meaning one who is dark in colour resembling Marakata. The Marakata stone has great properties. This Mother Goddess fulfills all desires.
The top of this Temple has been designed to be in the form of Sri Chakra as ordained by Sri Swamiji. The Nine Avaranas (Circumferences), Six Chakras, their Deities, Nava Durgas (Nine Incarnations of Goddess Durga Devi) and other allied energies are depicted in this temple as a special feature.
Lakshmi Dwaram (Outer Entrance to the Temple) :
After circumambulations we enter the temple, which has two entrances. The outer entrance is called ‘Lakshmi Dwaram’ and the inner ‘Saraswati Dwaram’. In the sanctum sanctorum is Mother Goddess Rajarajeswari. One can see on either side sculpture of two gatekeepers standing on Lions at the Lakshmi Dwaram (Outer entrance). Similarly Asta Lakshmis (Eight incarnations of Sri Lakshmi Devi) along with Jaya Lakshmi mata (Holy mother of Sri Swamiji) give darshan to the devotees blissfully. Above them are the Gandharvas, On top of them is Gaja Lakshmi. On either side are the Omkara and Srikara. Above that are flower Garlands made in the form of an arch. On them is sculpted the statue of Mother Goddess. There is another feature --on either side of this entrance are Hayagreeva and Agastya. The secrets of Mother Goddess came to the world only because of them. Hayagreeva initiated Agastya into the secrets of Mother Goddess with great difficulty. Agastya's wife Lopamudra Devi is also a great scholar about the knowledge of Sri Chakra and great devotee of Sri Mata. After besieging several times, Hayagreeva explained Atma tatva to Agastya. This great historical event has been represented by the statues of Hayagreeva and Agastya.
Below this on either side are carved a number of sculptures aligned on either side by statues of lions, Narada and Tumbura. Narada and Tumbura are the great musicians who have fathomed the ocean of music. Mother Goddess is pleased by music. Not only this, these two saints sang the praise of Mother Goddess on several occasions. After appreciating these special features at the Lakshmi Dwaram (Outer entrance) one enters into the Antaralaya.
Saraswati Dwaram (Inner Entrance to the Temple) :
Here we can see the attractive features on the Saraswati Dwaram (Inner entrance). On either side we can see Ashta (Eight) Ganapati statues in all, blessing the devotees. By the mere looks of Mother Goddess towards Kameshwara, Ganapati was created. On either side of the entrance are the Gandharva maidens and below them are the gate keepers. Mother Goddess Saraswati is seated up in the centre of the entrance with 'OM' 'Sreem' beejaaksharas (Seedletters) and swans and is blessing the devotees compassionately. On top of this entrance are sculptures of birds holding the flowered arch. On either side of this entrance we can see Rashi Chakra (Zodiac) and the Navagrahas, which implies that Time principle is always controlled by Mother Goddess. Below them are the Mayura (Peacocks)
In the Garbhalaya (Sanctum sanctorum) is seated the main deity Goddess Marakata Rajarajeswari whose darshan grants sanctity to the devotees. Placed at her feet is a Marakata Koorma Peetham (Tortoise like seat made of emerald) on which is placed a Manikya SriChakra (Ruby), covered with a golden armour shining effulgently.
The intricacies exhibited in the temple prove beyond doubt that this temple is nothing but a unique manifestation of the divine inspiration of Mother Goddess Rajarajeswari to Parama Pujya Sri Sri Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji.
This temple is a unique monument the 1st of its kind in the world
