Israel and Palestine: Achieving a Two-State Solution
Israel and Palestine: Achieving a Two-State Solution
(Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) Using specially commissioned interactive maps to display alternative solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, David Makovsky and Ghaith al-Omari argue that a two-state solution based on land-swaps is the only viable one for the future. The core principle of these swaps is to reconcile the Palestinian demand for a return to the pre-1967 lines with Israel's desire to include as many of the West Bank's 300,000 settlers in Israel proper as possible. They argue that any feasible scenario must include Israel's granting Palestinians arable land from within Israel's pre-1967 border in exchange for annexed settlement blocs (clusters of settlements) and that it is essential that, for any land annexed by Israel as part of a deal, Palestinians receive equal amounts of land. David Makovsky is the Director of the Project on the Middle East Peace Process at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Ghaith al-Omari is the Executive Director of the American Task Force on Palestine. State of Palestine: Sea protest staged over Israeli blockade
Young members of the Intifada Coalition attempted to sail six miles off the coast of Gaza, to demonstrate against the Israel imposed sea blockade against Gaza fishermen on Monday. According to the Oslo treaty, Gaza fishermen were allowed to fish within a 20 nautical mile zone, however in 2006, Israel initiated a blockade decreasing the fishing zone to three miles. Gaza fishermen have complained that the blockade has affected their business, with the annual cargo of fish falling from 4'000 tons to 1'500 tons. Around 40'000 of Gaza's inhabitants earn a living through fishing. There were several attempts to break the three-mile barrier. One vessel, the 'Marmara' managed to break through it briefly however Israeli boats fired warning shots forcing the activists to back away. State of Palestine: Christmas peace comes to barbed-wire Bethlehem
Thousands of tourists and pilgrims descended on the Bethlehem's Nativity Square on Tuesday afternoon for the opening of Christmas celebrations. Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Fouad Twal arrived at the traditional location of Jesus' birthplace for the festivities, accompanied by a marching band parade and giant Santa Claus puppet. Patriarch Twal will lead a Midnight Mass on Tuesday night in a service to be attended by European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. Bethlehem governor Abd al-Fattah Hamayel, Minister of Tourism Rula Maayah, Bethlehem Mayor Vera Baboun and Presidential Adviser for Christian Affairs Ziad Bandak all turned out on the sunny Manger Square for the event. Every year on Dec. 24, the Latin Patriarch marches from Jerusalem to open the Christmas celebrations. In 2003 Israel constructed an 8-meter high concrete wall topped with barbed wire around the city to separate the territory from Israel proper.- published: 24 Dec 2013

State of Palestine: Bethlehem decks the halls with hand grenades
Hand grenades and rubber bullets adorn a Christmas tree in Bethlehem's Manger square, located near the Church of the Nativity. The tree is designed to protest the Israeli occupation of West Bank territories and the US economic support that perpetuates occupation and subsidises the weapons used against Palestinians. Members of the Popular Resistance Committees and representatives of the Palestinian National Action in Bethlehem decorated the tree with hand grenades, rubber bullets and tear gas canisters, as well as Christmas lights and posters decrying the use of the weapons of occupation. The tree was unveiled earlier this week to highlight the Israeli occupation to the thousands of Christian pilgrims who visit the manger where Jesus was born.
