Deep Sea Lander, ROV and Mini Underwater Cameras
I made a
Deep sea lander (yet to test it in the ocean) but it works great in the lakes!
I also finished up the
ROV, which I hope to do some exploring with later on.
I also built a mini IP camera for looking around mid water column and a small gopro tidal time lapse box.
Also, I didn't show it here, but
I've been playing around with those analog fishing cameras and trail cams quite a bit. My trail cam has been in the woods since
Christmas! only seen a few deer and coyote's
...
Those lander feet are great for collecting soil samples, too!
Plenty of diatoms, nematodes and I think I even found macro fossils! I have only been able to take it down 62ft so far, but I plan on adding a 1ATM chamber and oil compensating that big box so I can get to some serious depths. I want to buy a bunch more tether for it. It ended up taking 10 days from no plan to first test.
The ROV was a fun build! The main chamber is at 1
ATM and all the motors are compensated with mineral oil. The 220V tether is great, its only 500ft long but I really wanted to try that out, the fiber was great too! Tts a bit annoying to deal with, but once you get used to it its not bad at all. That stuff can carry a signal 40km!
I'll be making an extruder for the tethers soon, woods
hole puts their fiber in the power conductors!
Right after I did the first test with the ROV I tore the entire electronics system out and started redoing it to optimize space and increase the cooling capacity. It wasn't an issue yet, but just kinda bothered me. I really want to be able to use the ROV, I built a claw for it and everything!
The
Mini IP camera took 2 hours to build, but it worked pretty good until I fried the camera inside (it was an extra one anyway) I plan on beefing it up and doing some hydrostatic tests in the future. It would get wrecked by any currents but in a deep lake(Like
Tahoe) it would probably work pretty well.
The Gopro
Tidal box worked great!
Built it out of scrap in an hour and threw it in the bay once the paint dried! It ended up staying out there for 3 days, than I put it in lakes for a while (the hd lander shots in the video were "fake", actually just the tidal box gopro because the quality was a lot better and the fish were cool)
Here are the codes, note that you may need to install some libraries in Processing and Arduino: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n94ekl0nzannj9s/AAB6VDzIvikBAYESomjv_cRma?dl=0
The outrigger and crane for the canoe were just made out of framing lumber and some foam, I build them the morning of the first test, so they worked, but weren't anything close to elegant.
So I think that's about it, I've almost finished my jet boat, all it needs is the steering and throttle cables!

There is plenty of dangerous stuff in this video, be careful!
