The Phoenician Alphabet - History of the World

The Phoenicians developed the alphabet circa 1400-1250 BC in order to communicate with the diverse cultures and tongues of their maritime trading partners. It was the Phoenician alphabet that was widely received in Greece and throughout the Mediterranean world, as it was only 22 letters based on sound, as opposed to the myriad of symbols in cuneiform and hieroglyphics prevalent at the time. The words phonic and phonetic have the same root as the word Phoenicia. Phoenicia is the name given to those city-states that grew on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea and were identified as centers of trade in ancient times. Families began to inhabit the land around Byblos about 6000 BC. The Phoenicians were a peaceful, seafaring people expert in navigation and trade, and, beginning around 3200 BC, were the first to explore the Mediterranean Sea in boats made of cedar. Protected by the mountains of Lebanon from warring nations, they were able to differentiate from their Canaanite neighbors and form a distinct culture and society, although they still called themselves Canaanites! Byblos, Tyre (2750 BC), and Sidon became main centers of commerce. In the ninth century BC, the Phoenician language extended as far north as Cilicia in Asia Minor. Between the ninth and sixth centuries BC, the naval proficiency of the Phoenician mariners established the first trading system to encompass the entire Mediterranean from their homeland, in what is now Lebanon, to colonies in Cyprus, Carthage, Sicily, Sardinia, and through the Straits of Gibraltar to Cadiz on the Atlantic coast of Spain and Lixus on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The word Bible, which means "the book," is derived from the city of Byblos, which was a trading source for papyrus, the writing material for early books. The legend of the Phoenix, the bird consumed by fire only to regenerate, is based upon the Phoenician people, whose land was occupied and towns destroyed many times by warlike peoples, only to regenerate time and again. In the fifth century BC, Herodotus of Greece, the Father of Historical Studies, was the one that named the seafarers the Phoenicians, the name that has stayed with them to this day. The Greek language spelled the word Φοινίκης or phoinikes. The Romans spelled it phoenix! The lecture addresses one of the crucial problems of the cultural development of mankind -- creation of an alphabetic system and its interrelation with different alphabets. The centerpiece of the work is a complex comparative investigation of the first letter of the Phoenician alphabet 'Aleph (bull) and the Kartuli Asomtavruli letter-signs Ani and Khari. The study consists of two basic sections: a) a comparative analysis of the Phoenician 'Aleph and the Kartuli Asomtavruli Ani, and b) a similar investigation focusing on 'Aleph and the Kartuli Khari, also meaning a bull. The uncovered connections between the mentioned Phoenician-Kartvelian pairs are of two types: a) exoteric or visible, such as the graphic design and the acrophonic principle of nomination, and b) cryptic or invisible - ties lying in deeper layers of Semito-Kartvelian relations and embracing mathematical, geometric, astronomical, calendar, and religious bonds. Interestingly, the latter, of which only the last two aspects will be discussed in the paper in detail, turned out to be much more diverse and significant for the establishment of genetic relations between the two different writing systems than the systemic features (shape, phonetic value, alphabetic order, etc.) acknowledged by traditional paleography so-far. For instance, in terms of calendar relations, the study throws light on a combined Semito-Kartvelian Moon God -- Bull (as the sacrificial animal of the Moon God) formula where being a dependent member, 'Aleph is governed by the Asomtavruli Ani. Similar subordinate relations are exhibited by the entire Phoenician alphabet in relation to its Kartvelian counterpart whose Khari group of seven letter-signs is an obligatory complement for the North Semitic mother alphabet to accomplish the lunar cycle of the month. The second part of the paper is linguistic and cultural analysis of the Semitic 'Aleph and a group of six Kartvelian words as its possible equivalents. The uncovered Kartvelian group represents a super-informational unit where the semantics of each member discloses a specific aspect of the Phoenician alphabet and contributes towards the formation of a massive informational bank, confirming not only some well-known historical facts but more importantly, elucidating a number of interpenetrating, interdependent, and harmonious esoteric affinities uniting the Phoenician and Kartuli Asomtavruli alphabets as mutually complementary systems.

This museum, which was opened in 1942, is home to an outstanding collection of archaeological pieces. On the ground floor alone there are 70 large items with the highlight being the sarcophagus of Ahirm, the King of Byblos.
