Carlos Gracie (September 14, 1902 – October 7, 1994) along with his younger brother Hélio Gracie, and fellow students Luis Franca and Oswaldo Fadda are credited with being the primary developer of modern Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is primarily based on knowledge from Mitsuyo Maeda, widely considered to be the martial-arts patriarch of the Gracie Family. Carlos Gracie acquired his knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu by studying in Belem under Maeda and his students. As he taught the techniques to his brothers, he created a martial arts family with Hélio and with other members of the Gracie family who provided key contributions to the style.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu developed in Brazil in the early 1900s using techniques learned from the great Japanese champion, Mitsuyo Maeda (known in Brazil as Conde Koma—the "Count of Combat"). Maeda, who was taught by Jigoro Kano, the creator of Judo, fought hundreds of victorious challenge matches against practitioners of other styles using his Judo techniques to overcome them. Maeda had become a champion Judoka in Japan and was so highly revered by Kano he was sent around the world to spread Judo.

Gracie is the creator of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and Confederação Brasileira de Jiu-jitsu which run multiple jiu-jitsu tournaments in the world including the Mundials, Pan American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship and European Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships.
Gracie is also the creator and director of Gracie Magazine, a monthly Brazilian jiu-jitsu publication.

Gracie Barra is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association, with over 500 schools on six continents. The organization was founded by Carlos Gracie, Jr., (to the members of Gracie Barra, he is known as Master Carlos.) who was born on January 17, 1956 and grew up heavily influenced by his family, especially his father Carlos Gracie Sr. and his brother Rolls Gracie. As one of the latest count from the organization, they have graduated more than 600 black belts all over the world.
The very first Gracie Barra school was first founded in the neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro in 1986. In a few years Carlos Gracie Jr. was able to turn Gracie Barra into one of the most dominant teams in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu winning many consecutive world titles. Despite the outstanding results in tournaments, Carlos Gracie Jr. worked hard to create a positive learning environment where all kinds of people could learn the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At the school, people can see world champions training with lawyers, doctors, business men, etc. on a mutual supportive environment dedicated to development of the individual and strengthening of the team spirit.

A great classic fight between John Lewis and Gracie. At this time the Gracie's were considered unbeatable. This fight was the first to show their vulnerability. Love it or hate it. It's a classic. Notice Vitor Belfort before his first fight and the great Carlson Sr, in his corner. John Perretti commentating and Gokar refereeing.
