Paul Bert (17 October 1833 – 11 November 1886) was a French zoologist, physiologist and politician. He is sometimes given the sobriquet "Father of Aviation Medicine".
Bert was born at Auxerre (Yonne). He entered the École polytechnique at Paris with the intention of becoming an engineer; then changing his mind, he studied law; and finally, under the influence of the zoologist, Louis Pierre Gratiolet (1815–1865), he took up physiology, becoming one of Claude Bernard's most brilliant pupils. After graduating at Paris as doctor of medicine in 1863, and doctor of science in 1866, he was appointed professor of physiology successively at Bordeaux (1866) and the Sorbonne (1869).
After the "Commune de Paris" (1870) he began to take part in politics as a supporter of Gambetta. In 1874 he was elected to the Assembly, where he sat on the extreme left, and in 1876 to the chamber of deputies. He was one of the most determined enemies of clericalism, and an ardent advocate of "liberating national education from religious sects, while rendering it accessible to every citizen."

This old world is pretty crazy
People hurting everywhere
Cities dying, leaders lying
Demons dancing in the air
Once I thought I knew the answer
To the sorrow on this earth
One day judge and one day jury
But the more I see the beauty
Turn to hatred and to fear
There's just one thing that I'm sure of
You're the one I love
You're the one I love
Sure as stars above
You're the one I love
Turn my paper, flick my TV,
See my saviours all around
Some say this way, then it's that way
'Till I'm crazy with their sound
Then I look at our two children
See the magic in their eyes
And I wonder what's before them
They say that each new generation
Holds the secret to their time
Will they heed this age old story?
You're the one I love,
You're the one I love
Sure as stars above
You're the one I love
Mogadishu, Sarajevo,
Kampuchea, Palestine,
Belfast city, L.A. war zone,
Children screaming, men in line
Could I really turn to kill you
'Cos your eyes are not quite blue
Watch your daughter beg for mercy?
Could I fool myself forever
That a habit is a truth,
Does it matter if I tell you
That you're the one I love?
You're the one I love
Sure as stars above
You're the one I love
Take me on home, I want to go home
In the shadow of a lightning storm
Black girl make a heart-move
Strong love come a rising high
Warm love and she whisper out
She trust in you
You know that I trust in you "
He come out on an instinct curve
Strumming up through the backbone
Blood curdle out a blue-gene roar
Body rule and she whisper out
She trust in you
"You know that I trust in you "
(And she say),
Give me a sign
Show me you love me
Show me it's true
That you're thinking of me
Open your door,
Take me inside you
How do I score?
How do I find you?
Find you find you?
Rain clatter on a window pane
Make a love-shape easy,
Salt tang on a scented skin,
Heat come and she whisper out
She trust in you
"You know that I trust in you "
Boy jump to the backbone dance,
Black girl make a heart-move,
Long day till the two roads meet,
Sun rise, still she whisper out
She trust in you
"You know that I trust in you "
(And she say),
Give me a sign
Show me you love me
Show me it's true
That you're thinking of me
Open your door,
Take me inside you
How do I score?
How do I find you?
Find you, find you?
Sometimes the things that you say
Can hurt me so bad
You know that it's true
Sometimes your love lifts me up
So high I could cry
Can't live without you
Like a knock on the door
Open it up
What do you see?
Could be a trick or treat
Bitter or sweet
Which one you gonna be?
Sometimes I fill up your cup
So your river flows
You know that it's true
Sometimes my love makes you pay
Though baby, I swear, I'm not wanting to
Like a knock on the door etc
Look at what this love can do
Send us out into a world that's new
You no compass, baby, me no map
No one to show us where they laid the trap
Trick or Treat, baby, that's the game
One day passion one day pain
You can try to change the rules but
Chorus
Trick or Treat make you the fool
Trick or Treat make you the fool
Sometimes a moment of bliss
That starts with a kiss
Can end up so blue
'Cos I might say something wrong
And then comes along
A whole different you
Like a knock on the door etc
Look what this love can do etc
Chorus
Trick or Treat make you the fool
I knew this African called Hannibal
Rock it roll it send it down the avenue
Went out to see the Roman Empire fall
Uh huh? uh huh?
Two thousand elephants in gold chain-mail
Take it, shake it, make it what you wanna be
Them Roman legionnaires they hit the trail
Uh huh?
The world is what you make it
The world is what you make it
When Cleopatra ruled in Egypt's land
Jump down, turn around, look at what the monkey did
She went to find herself a mighty man
Uh huh? uh huh?
In come Antonio from Italy
Haul it, ball it, drag it up the pyramid,
He never knew how hot a girl could be
Uh huh?
The world is what you make it
The world is what you make it baby
The world is what you make it
Don't start to hit me with your no can do;
Bluesin', losin', workin' up an attitude
Clean up them windows let the sun shine through
Uh huh? uh huh?
There ain't no happy time without no pain
heartbreak, new date, move on up the alleyway
Pick up them pieces hit the road again
Uh huh?
The world is what you make it
The world is what you make it baby
Johnny's got high expectations
He's gonna rise
Everyone knows that Johnny is ready
He's ready to fly
Up on the rooftop he turns to the crowd
No one is waiting
No one is there
Chorus
Nobody knows why Elvis threw it all away
Nobody knows what Ruby had to hide
Nobody knows why some of us get broken hearts
And some of us find a world that's clear and bright
You could be packed up and ready
Knowing exactly where to go
How come you miss the connection?
No use in asking...the answer is nobody knows
No use in asking...the answer is nobody knows
Johnny will keep his illusions
What else can he do?
And you can pretend that it would be different
If it happened to you
But up on the rooftop, it's a whole other world
And who could see heaven
And not want to stay?
I know they say if you love somebody
you should set them free (so they say)
but it sure is hard to do,
but it sure is hard to do
I know they say if it don't come back again
then it's meant to be (so they say)
Those words don't pull me
through cause I'm still in love with you
I spend each day here waitin' for a miracle
But it's just you and me goin' through the mill
climbin' up a hill
this is the long goodbye
somebody tell me why,
two lovers in love can't make it,
just what kinda love keeps breakin' a heart
no matter how hard I try, Your gonna make me cry
come on baby, it's over...let's face it
all that's happenin' here is a long goodbye
sometimes I ask my heart did we really ...
...give our love a chance
(Just the one more chance)
but I know without a doubt, that we turned it inside out
and if we walked away would it make more sense (only self defense)
but it tears me up inside, just to think we still could try
how long must we keep runnin' on a carousel
goin' round and round and never gettin' anywhere
on a wing and prayer
repeat chorus
It was on one bright March morning
I bid New Orleans adieu
And I took the road to Jackson town
My fortune to renew
I cursed all foreign money
No credit could I gain
Which filled my heart with longing
For the lakes of Pontcahrtrain
I stepped on board of a railroad car
Beneath the morning sun
I rode the rods till evening
And I laid me down again
All strangers there, no friends to me
Till a dark girl towards me came
And I fell in love with a Creole girl
By the lakes of Pontchartrain
I said my pretty Creole girl
My money here's no good
And if it weren't for the alligators
I'd sleep out in the wood
"You're welcome here kind stranger
Our house is very plain
But we never turned a stranger out
On the banks of Pontchartrain "
She took me into her mammy's house
And she treated me right well
The hair upon her shoulders
In jet black ringlets fell
To try to paint her beauty
I'm sure 't would be in vain
So handsome was my Creole girl
By the lakes of Pontchartrain
I asked her if she'd marry me
She said that this could never be
For she had got a lover
And he was far at sea
She said that she would wait for him
And true she would remain
Till he'd return to his Creole girl
By the Lakes of Pontchartrain
So fare thee well, my bonny own girl
I never may see you more
But I'll ne'er forget your kindness
In the cottage by the shore
And at each social gathering
A flowing glass I'll drain
And I'll drink a health to my Creole girl
They say the skies of Lebanon are burning,
Those mighty Cedars bleeding in the heat,
They're showing pictures on the Television,
Women and children dying in the street,
And we're still at it in our own place,
Still trying to reach the future through the past,
Still trying to carve tomorrow from a tombstone...
Chorus
But hey ! Don't listen to me !
This wasn't meant to be no sad song,
We've heard too much of that before,
Right now I only want to be here with you,
Till the morning dew comes fall
ing,
I want to take you to the Island,
And trace your footprints in the sand,
And in the evening when the sun goes down,
We'll make love to the sound of the ocean.
They're raising banners over by the markets,
Whitewashing slogans on the shipyard walls,
Witchdoctors praying for a mighty showdown,
No way our holy flag is gonna fall,
Up here we sacrifice our children,
To feed the worn out dreams of yesterday,
And teach them dying will lead us into glory...
Repeat Chorus.
Now I know us plain folks don't see all the story,
And I know this peace and love's just copping out,
And I guess these young boys dying in the ditches,
Is just what being free is all about,
And how this twisted wreckage down on main street,
Will bring us all together in the end,
And we'll go marching down the road to freedom ... freedom ...
I've just dropped in to see you all
I'll only stay awhile
I want to hear how you're getting on
I want to hear you smile
I'm happy to be back again
And greet you big and small
For there's no place on earth just like
The homes of Donegal
I long to see your smiling children
Standing by the door
The kettle boiling on the hearth
As I walk up the floor
And then to see a welcome free
For travellers one and all
For your hearts are like your mountains
In the homes of Donegal
I'd like to stay along with you
And while away the night
With fairy lore and tales of yore
Beside the turf fire bright
And then to see laid out for me
A shake-down by the wall
For there's rest for weary wanderers
In the homes of Donegal
The time has come for me to go
And bid you all adieu
For the open highway calls me back
To do these things I do
But when I'm travelling far away
Your friendship I'll recall
And please God I'll soon return unto
The homes of Donegal
Donegal, Pride of all
WAS DOWN IN A HOLE SNUFFLIN' LIKE A MOLE
WHEN MY FRIEND ON THE PHONE TOLD ME IT'S OK
THERE'S A PLACE YOU CAN BE.. THE MUSIC SETS YOU FREE
COME ON OVER AND WE'LL DO IT THE HAWANA WAY
CARLOS VARELA, CHU CHU VALDES
MUÑEQUITOS DE MATANZAS, BENNY MORÉ
YEAH, REUBEN GONZALES, WHAT CAN I SAY?
HEY! BARBARITO TORRES!!
IF YOUR MIND IS A MESS, YOUR BODY'S IN DISTRESS
CATCH YOUR SORRY SOUL A REST THE HAWANA WAY
THROW YOUR FUTURE TO THE WIND

START A NEW WAY OF LIVING THE HAWANA WAY
SO I DID LIKE SHE SAID, THREW MY SUITCASE ON THE BED
PACKED MY RENNIES, PEPTO-BISMOL, PARACETAMOL
AND I'M FEELIN' NO PAIN ON SOME FUNKY RUSSIAN PLANE
HEADIN' DOWN THE CARIBBEAN TO FORGET IT ALL
'55 CHEVVIES, '65 FORDS,
COFFEE SKINNED CHICAS ON THE MALECON
MOJITOS, HABAÑOS... APAGON!!!
HEY COCO TAXI, HANG ON!
IF YOUR MIND IS A MESS, YOUR BODY'S IN DISTRESS
CATCH YOUR SORRY SOUL A REST THE HAWANA WAY
THROW YOUR FUTURE TO THE WIND
YOU'LL FIND IT'S NO SIN
START A NEW WAY OF LIVING THE HAWANA WAY
GIMME ONE MORE DAY,
BABE I GOTTA STAY
HEAR THAT MUSIC PLAY
THE HAWANA WAY
HAWANA WAY
So many years of reaching out for words unspoken
So many nights of saving love for no-one there
So many hearts that break when promises are broken
How long before you find the answer to your prayer
It's the awakening... It's the awakening...
How high the road that leads us on from Sweet Surrender
How soft the wind that waits to speed us on our way
How young and foolish were we still to be pretending
That we could make our love grow any other way
It's the awakening
(Tonight you see her with different eye
It's the awakening
(Tonight you know where your happiness lies)
(Chorus)
And if you're looking for the answers to your questions
Look inside
And if you're wondering why your heart is always restless
Look inside
Could you and I forget the times when we were strangers
When all the beauty that we shared was swept away
When every avenue we walked would lead to nowhere
Could you and I forget the tears of yesterday
It's the awakening
(And you can leave all the sadness behind)
It's the awakening
(And no
w you're ready to find peace of mind)
It's the awakening.
(Chorus)
And if you're looking for the answers to your questions
Look inside
And if you're wondering why your heart is always restless
Look inside
It's the awakening
And you can dry all the tears from your eyes
It's the awakening
And you don't have to invent a disguise
It's the awakening
Tonight you know where your happiness lies
It's the awakening
The sun is up and the future is bright
Seems like a dream
In some old silent movie scene
You come to me like in a mirror...
Held out my hand
Finally I would understand
But you slipped away...
What did I say?
Over the years
Through all the laughter and the tears
Time after time I try to find you
Then in some place
Suddenly I will see your face
But when I get near
You disappear
Still I feel you everywhere
Chorus
Soul Child
Are you waiting for me to find you?
Soul child
Do you belong in my life?
Do I still keep building my world around you?
Dreams of you in my life forever
Soul child, my sweet soul child
My sweet soul child
Right from the start
You said that we would never part
If I believed that you really loved me
Sometimes it's true I didn't think I needed you
But now that you're gone I know I was wrong
Still I feel you everywhere
Baby, sometimes life can be
What it's not supposed to be
Friends can be so hard to find
When your heart's the constant kind
But that's all right, my sweet baby
Don't you cry, my sweet baby
When it's time to stand your ground
And they run to put you down
And you know deep down inside
That it's not not just foolish pride
That's all right, little darlin'
Dry your eyes, little darlin'
Don't you worry
Chorus
Baby, when this cruel world
Is tearing you apart
Let me be your shelter
When the storm hits your heart
When you think that no one is listening
In heaven up above
Let me ease your sorrow
With a heart full of love
Solid love, solid love
Baby, sometimes life can be
What it's not supposed to be
But that's all right, little darlin'
Dry your eyes, little darlin'
Don't you worry
D Bm
They say the world is heading for a breakdown
No more safe ground anymore
Just one little slip and we'd all be gone without a trace
But when I see your face I just have to
Smile,
Forget for a little while
What can I do?
Smile,
Live in the here and now
For me and for you
A long time ago way back in the beginning
They thought the ending was getting near
But now we know that every time the darkness comes
That old morning sun will surely rise and
Smile,
Doin' its thing in style
Whatever they say
Smile,
We're only here a while
Time ticking away
I could be just a dreamer
But I say the grass looks greener when you
Smile,
Just for a little while
Forget what they say
Smile,
Do what you do in style
Do it today
Smile,
Take it the extra mile
It'll be ok
Smile,
Love in the here and now
Let's get out and play
I've out into the fast lane
You say you need excitement
To make you come alive
Some place a million miles from
The shadows that surround you
I look for your attention
You're lost out in the future
Where lovers ask no questions
And shadows never fall
Some pilgrim bound for paradise
No compromise
Chorus
But paradise is here
It's time to stop your crying
The future is this moment
And not some place out there
Tonight I need your love
Don't talk about tomorrow
Right now, I need your loving
Right now, give it to me
Right now, I want your loving
Right now, give it to me
Right now
You talk about your new plans
To move on up the stairway
You dream about the high life
That's waiting for you there
A world of fame and fortune
That's just around the corner
But I don't need no high life
To make me feel like a real man
And I don't need to reach for
No castles in the sky
Just put your arms around me
Devour me
I was just about nineteen
When I landed on their shore
With my eyes big as headlights
Like the thousands and thousands who came before
I was going to be something . . .
Smiled at the man scrutinising my face
As I stepped down off the gangway
Came down to their city
Where I worked for many's the year
Built a hundred houses
Must've pulled half a million pints of beer
Living under suspicion
Putting up with the hatred and fear in their eyes
You can see that you're nothing but a murderer
In their eyes, we're nothing but a bunch of murderers
Hey, Johnny, can't wait till Saturday night!
Got a thirst that's raging . . .
Know a place where we can put that right
Wash away the confusion
Hose down this fire inside
But look out!
'Cause I'll tear you into pieces if you cross me.
I'm sick of watching them break up
Every time some bird brain puts us down
Making jokes on the radio . . .
Guess it helps them all drown out the sound
Of the crumbling foundations
Any fool can see the writing on the wall
But they just don't believe that its happening.
There's a crowd says I'm alright
Say they like my turn of phrase
Take me round to their parties
Like some dressed up monkey in a cage.
And I play my accordion
Oh! but when the wine seeps through the facade
It's nothing but the same old story
Nothing but the same old story
Got a brother in Boston
Says he'll send me on the fare
Just wrote me a letter
Making out that he's cleaning up out there
Two cars in the driveway.
Summer house way down on the Cape
And I know he'd fix me up in the morning
I've been thinking about it
But it seems so far to go
People say in the winter
you'd get lost underneath the snow
And there's this girl from my home place
We've been planning to move back and give it a try
So I never got around to going
When times are hard
And friends are few
And you need someone
To help you through
Just call my name
And I'll come running to your side
Don't be afraid, don't be afraid
I will be there
(When you are lost, lost in the night,
nowhere to turn)
I will be there
(Don't be afraid, don't be afraid)
When morning comes
and nothing's changed
And the world outside
Plays the same old game
Just call on me
And I will ease your lonely heart
Don't be afraid, don't be afraid
I will be there
(When you are lost, lost in the night,
nowhere to turn)
I will be there
(Don't be afraid, don't be afraid)
I will be there
(When everyone that you believed
still lets you down)
I will be there
(Don't be afraid, don't be afraid)
I will be there, don't be afraid
I will be there, don't be afraid
When morning comes
and nothing's changed
And the world outside
Plays the same old game
When everyone still lets you down
I will be there
When times are hard
And friends are few
And you need someone to help you through
I will be there, don't be afraid
I will be there, don't be afraid
Come all you lads of high renown
That would hear of a fair young maiden
And she roved out on a summer's day
For to view the soldiers parading
They marched so bold and they looked so gay
Their colours flying and the bands did play
And it caused young Mary for to say
"I'll wed you me my gallant soldier"
She viewed the soldiers on parade
And as they stood at their leisure
And Mary to herself did say:
"At last I've found my treasure
But oh how cruel my parents must be
To banish my true love away from me
Well I'll leave them all and I'll go with thee
My bold undaunted soldier"
"Oh Mary dear, your parents' love
I pray don't be unruly
For when you're in a foreign land,
Believe me you'll rue it surely
Perhaps in battle I might fall
From a shot from an angry cannonball
And you so far from your daddy's hall
Be advised by a gallant soldier."
"Oh I have fifty guineas in bright gold,
Likewise a heart that's bolder
And I'd leave them all and I'll go with you
My bold undaunted soldier
So don't say no but let me go
And I will face the daring foe
And we'll march together to and fro
And I'll wed you, my gallant soldier"
And when he saw her loyalty
And Mary so true-hearted
He said: "My darling, married we'll be
And nothing but death will part us
And when we're in a foreign land
I'll guard you, darling, with my right hand
In hopes that God might stand a friend
Jimmy's not a high concept guy
But he's front page news, let me tell you why
He's on the cover of the New York Post
All three networks, coast to coast
All he needed was a hot night in June
'Cos he had the needle and he had the spoon
When he spiked it bit, and man, he flew
Into America's living room
We all love tragedy, it loves us too
It's a marriage made in Hollywood
Between greed and you
All you need to be a star is to die in open view
It's a marriage made in Hollywood
Between greed and you
Between greed and you
Between greed and you
Loved by women, admired by men
He walked down broadway with his best friend
His brain was wired like a light in a socket
With his old friend in his back pocket
That horse could kick, that horse could scream
Ride you out of here into a different scene
Unrequited love, that makes it fair
But who keeps score when you're in mid-air?
Repeat Chorus
Like a free-fall chute that didn't open
He looked down to see his dream was broken
He stared back up at a hot grey sky
Re-run his life and then he died
Well if you jump off a building, brother beware!
'Cos my friend Jimmy woke up mid-air
No time to smile, no time to wave
They buried him in a media grave
Beached by the same tide when we met
Caught in a storm when we came together
I never needed someone
Like I needed you back then
I swear I believed it
I never lied to you
When I said what I said
But I think you know
It's the end of the story
You been...crying in your sleep
(crying in your sleep)
Time is the judge
And tears are the jury
We got to make that bitter leap
Love made a promise
Love made a promise
Time couldn't keep
We run from the truth
But we end up nowhere
And everyone knows
You can't run forever
Seems that just wanting something
Don't mean it's going to be
We played by the rules
But time's made liars
Out of you and me, yeah!
But I think you know
It's the end of the story
You been...crying in your sleep
(crying in your sleep)
Time is the judge
And tears are the jury
We got to make that bitter leap
Love made a promise
Love made a promise
Time couldn't keep
So we find another way
To get through another night
And we spend the whole night dreaming
Another day we'll find a way
To make it all right
To make it all right
Time is the judge
Tears are the jury
We got to take that bitter leap
Love made a promise
Love made a promise
Time couldn't keep
Time couldn't keep
Can't say we didn't try
People like us
We search the sky at night
Waiting for stars to fall
Holding our breath
Hoping our time will come
Waiting to hear the call
Time after time
We seem to stand in line
Year after endless year...
Wondering if
The moment has passed us by,
And where do we go from here.
Dreams may come and go
Things may hurt us so.
But why should I be afraid?
Chorus
As long as I know
Wherever we go
Love goes on
All of the time
Rain or come shine
Love goes on
You and me here
Nothing to fear
When love goes on
Love goes on and on
People like us
We know the sky at night
Is only a day away...
Stars will come out,
This time our turn may come
Tomorrow could be the day.
Dreams may come and go
But I still love you so
And nothing can harm me now
Lately I been talking to some friends of mine
(You know the kind who understand)
Trying to get a handle on this heart of mine
(Sometimes it's hard to be a man)
How to find a way to end these wars with you?
(The more we run the more we hide)
Were we just fools to ever start?
Would it make sense for us to part?
Then I started looking for some sympathy
(You know that boys can still be boys)
Churning out this hurting deep inside of me
(Just like a child who lost his toys)
And I'm ducking and I'm diving
And I'm running and I'm hiding
From what's standing right in front of me
(Sometimes the truth's so hard to find)
Making me blind I could not see
That you were the perfect one for me
Just in time
I saw a picture in the mirror, baby
Of a man acting like a fool
Just in time
I saw a vision of a future without you
Just in time
I realised a lot of things that I'd been hiding in this
Heart of mine
Just in time
I saw the beauty of a love that's oh so true
Baby, you and I we got this magic touch
(And we can fly right to the stars)
And maybe that's the reason why it hurts so much
(Cos when we fall we fall so far)
But all we gotta do is reach out to each other
And listen to our hearts inside
(Just let the wheel of love go round)
Love is a crazy carousel
Jump up on board and ring the bell
Just in time
I saw a picture in the mirror baby
Of a man losing what he had
Just in time
I saw a vision of a future without you
Just in time
I realised a lot of things that I'd been hiding
In this heart of mine
Just in time
I saw the beauty of a love that' oh so true
And I need your love
And I need your love
Gotta have your love
We travel in circles
At most it's a fleeting touch
A hurried connection
Spirits colliding,
locked up in a human frame,
This gulf in between us
We meet on a tangent
A chance to be not alone,
You want me to find you
I speak with my body,
A language I long to share
But the words fall between us
A message in my mind goes out to you
A chance to maybe reach a part of you
That you keep on hiding
I want you to want me
The way that I want you
A coming together
A physical way
I need you to touch me
Like I want to touch you
With you it's forever
We look at each other
There's nowhere we'd rather be,
No end of the rainbow
We pick up the pieces,
We look for a way to cross
The distance between us
It's like I only feel I'm part of you,
When I can love you like I'm longing to
'Cos baby that's ecstasy!
I guess it's time to face the whole truth
This situation's here to stay
We keep returning to this same place
I watch my courage slip away
I look for something in your eyes
A sign of anything between us
Come on and help me to believe
That we can save our love
Come on and help me to believe
In blessings from above
I'd get down on my bended knees
If wanting was enough
Is there some thruway in my mind
Or will I find that love is over?
love is over?
You walk towards me like a memory
We pass each other in a dream
Outside the rain falls on a new world
A world of things that might have been
I hear an echo from inside
It speaks of never ending heartbreak
Come on and help me to believe
That we can save our love
Come on and help me to believe
In blessings from above
I'd get down on my bended knees
If wanting was enough
Too many nights we hold this line
Shutters on the windows, chains upon the door
Sleepless nights spent waiting for an answer
Dreams of heaven falling, panic in the town
Lonely men with fingers on the future...
When all is said and done
You are the only one
Follow on
For the open road is waiting,
Like the song,
We will welcome what tomorrow has to bring
Be it fair or stormy weather
Take my hand
And we'll walk the road together
I won't mind
If it turns out that we never find the end
For all I ask is that you want me as a friend
Days of beauty calling, vanish through a haze
Lost inside some spiral with no ending
Still you bring me loving, free me with a touch
Lead me out to greet the calm descending
When all is said and done
I had a dream
That you might love me
That you and I
We were meant for each other
And living was what it could be
I set my sail
I steered towards you
No wind or hail
Could keep us from being together
I heard you calling to me
In my dream, in my dream
Chorus
Long as the sun
Comes over the mountain
Long as true lovers
Throw coins in a fountain
Dreams will come, these dreams will come
Dreams will come, these dreams will come
The wind it blew
It blew for hours
By my love grew
Stronger than all of the ocean
My spirit flew like a bird
I trimmed my sail
Slipped through the showers
How could I fail
With all of this power in motion?
For we were to conquer the world
In my dream, in my dream
Here comes the let down
Hearing your voice on the telephone
Wanting you here with me
Knowing I'm going to be on my own
When you say that it won't be tonight
Should I show you I'm hurting?
Would it help me to stand up and fight
Or would that be just the chance you've been waiting for?
Chorus
Don't keep pretending
That we aren't drifting apart
You're fooling yourself
You know that you're never going to leave him
And if this thing is ending
Please don't keep breaking my heart
If I'm not the one
Then baby please tell me that it's over
You come and cry on my shoulder
You promise me this time you're really through
And I end up believing
That this time I'm goin' to have all of you
Then you say that you think we should wait
Just a little bit longer
Should I tell you it's getting too late
To keep on believing I mean that much to you?
Repeat Chorus, then
Don't keep pretending
That you really want to let go baby
Is this the ending?
'Cause I can start to feel you slip away
Don't keep pretending
That he doesn't have a hold on you
Is this the ending?
Oh I really got to know the answer baby
Don't keep pretending
That you really want to be with me
Do you really want to be with me?
Whenever I wake up in the night
Your promises echo in my mind
But my heart keeps telling me this could never be
And then I would say it over again
That I would never be your fool
Snowbound siren in the winter dawn,
And there's a blizzard blowin' in from off the river,
It's 10 below out on these city streets,
Oh the feelin' in your heart is even colder
The sunrise screechin' down the line,
The fog bank's runnin' out of time,
But you won't be here when they creep in tomorrow.
You're tired of dreamin' someone else's dreams,
When they really don't include you any longer,
You're miles from home, runnin' down with each day,
And you need a woman's love to keep you stronger,
Lately you've been gettin' doubts,
And a voice inside keeps callin' out,
That someone else's dreams won't get you nowhere.
So shut that suitcase kiss the year goodbye,
And don't let nobody stop you at the doorway,
And close the shutters on this empty room,
Where those crazy dreams some crawlin' to devour you.
And head out on across that line,
Where she's been waitin' all this time,
And tell him that you want him there forever.
It's still 2 hours 'til this plane gets down,
I can hardly bear to wait another minute,
Your sweet lovin's all I need,
And darlin' it's been buildin' up inside of me,
Tonight we're gonna paint the town,
We're gonna drink champagne until we both fall down,
And find some other crazy dream tomorrow,
Tonight we're gonna paint the town,
We're gonna drink champagne until we both fall down,
And find some other crazy dream tomorrow.

Hot words on a summer night
You 'n' me having a fight
One drink and it all come out
Before I knew what we were fightin' about
Hurt come from a midnight place
Dressed in a web of lace
Brainstorm blowin' up inside
I can't stop wanting you
I can't stop wanting you
Now I know it's a modern world
And baby you're a modern girl
And I try to be tops at school
Pickin' up on these modern rules
Teacher come and teacher go
Teacher know when a boy is slow
This boy got a lot to learn
I can't stop wanting you
I can't stop wanting you
It's a new kind of world
For a boy and a girl
And my mind's in a whirl
I can't stop wanting you
I can't stop wanting you
Hot words on a summer night
You 'n' me having a fight
One drink and it all come out
Before I knew what we were fightin' about
I tried but the truth is out
I can't stop wanting you
There you go again
Pretending that the world is blue
And you see red when I explain
That I don't share your point of view
Well I say open up your eyes
For the world is like a rainbow
And maybe blue is just the colour
Of the world inside of you
But that kind of blue world
That's not my world
I don't want to paint your picture
I ain't here to sing your sorrows
Ain't got time to be your hero
I don't want to be your poet
Everybody feel the same pain
Everybody doing time
I can't be the one you're needing
I can just be who I am
Who I am
We all want a world
With a perfect constitution
Believe me, we all want it now
Don't want to wait another day
And maybe if this world's to change
It's going to take a revolution
But in the meantime, be my friend
And don't turn your head away
For your kind of blue world
That's not my world
I don't want to paint your picture
I don't want to write your dreams
I ain't here to sing your sorrows
Your blue world is not my scene
Ain't got time to be your hero
You can tell me that's a crime
I don't want to be your poet
Crying out your ancient rhyme
Everybody feel the same pain
Everybody doing time
I can't be the one you're needing
Some of us spend hours
In front of a Friday night mirror
Trying to understand the kinda world
Where the beautiful prosper
Slicking up the kinda hair
That the magazines say's a lost cause
Picking out the kinda girl in your mind
To go walking with you
Yesterday I met a girl
She made Marilyn Monroe look like...me
All she had to do was walk in the room
And my problems were starting
Then she look at me, and she smile
And I feel such a pain in my heart
Wanting her to come and whisper to me
"You're the man of my dreams"
Chorus
Beautiful world, beautiful world
Sending me dreams, touching my hair
Making me cry....so I feel alive
Beautiful world, why do I hide?
I dunno why
I should spend so much time feeling sad
I got everything a sinner could hope to get
This side of Eden
Maybe some day I'll wake up
And I'll do what I should
Write a song to make heaven and earth
Go waltzing in time
Oh, me and my cousin, one Arthur McBride
As we went a-walking down by the seaside
Now, mark what followed and what did betide
For it being on Christmas morning...
Out for recreation, we went on a tramp
And we met Sergeant Napper and Corporal Vamp
And a little wee drummer, intending to camp
For the day being pleasant and charming.
"Good morning ! Good morning!"; the sergeant did cry
";And the same to you gentlemen! "; we did reply ,
Intending no harm but meant to pass by
For it being on Christmas morning.
But says he, " My fine fellows if you will enlist,
It's ten guineas in gold I will slip in your fist
And a crown in the bargain for to kick up the dust
And drink the King's health in the morning.
For a soldier he leads a very fine life
And he always is blessed with a charming young wife
And he pays all his debts without sorrow or strife
And always lives pleasant and charming...
And a soldier he always is decent and clean
In the finest of clothing he's constantly seen
While other poor fellows go dirty and mean
And sup on thin gruel in the morning. "
" But ",says Arthur, "I wouldn't be proud of your clothes
For you've only the lend of them as I suppose
And you dare not change them one night, for you know
If you do you'll be flogged in the morning.
And although that we are single and free
we take great delight in our own company
And we have no desire strange faces to see
Although that your offers are charming
And we have no desire to take your advance
All hazards and dangers we barter on chance
For you would have no scruples for to send us to France
Where we would get shot without warning "
" Oh now! ", says the sergeant "I'll have no such chat
And I neither will take it from spalpeen or brat
For if you insult me with one other word
I'll cut off your heads in the morning "
And then Arthur and I we soon drew our hods
And we scarce gave them time for to draw their own blades
When a trusty shillelagh came over their heads
And bade them take that as fair warning
And their old rusty rapiers that hung by their side
We flung them as far as we could in the tide
" Now take them out, Divils! ", cried Arthur McBride
" And temper their edge in the morning ".
And the little wee drummer we flattened his pow
And we made a football of his rowdeydowdow
Threw it in the tide for to rock and to row
And bade it a tedious returning
And we having no money, paid them off in cracks
And we paid no respect to their two bloody backs
For we lathered them there like a pair of wet sacks
And left them for dead in the morning.
And so to conclude and to finish disputes
We obligingly asked if they wanted recruits
For we were the lads who would give them hard clouts
And bid them look sharp in the morning.
Oh me and my cousin, one Arthur McBride
As we went a walkin' down by the seaside,
Now mark what followed and what did betide
How does the world keep turning?
How does a feeling grow?
How does a love stay burning
After the first hot glow?
Whoever said, "When a boy meets a girl
It's written in Heaven above "
Must've been mixing up loving
With being in love
After the party's over
Can a love go on?
Can a love stay strong
When the dancers are drifting apart?
How can we two discover
How to carry on
Living the same love song?
What makes good love go wrong
When two hearts belong to each other?
When is a dream 'just dreaming'?
When should a lover go?
When is a lie worth living?
Baby, I need to know
Somewhere way back
In the darkness of time,
Somebody could not be strong
Now when we look
For a world to believe in
It's gone, it's gone
I've been here a long long time
Trying to get things right
You might think I'd know by now
But it's still out of sight
People say I'm doin' ok
And when will I get sense?
They can't see what's sure to come
When I get confidence
Chorus
Cos I won't let go
Of the world I know inside
(gonna make it be real)
Got a million dreams
That I will not see denied
When I learn to believe in me
Days I feel it's getting near
Angels call my name
I look up, they disappear
Like in some schoolyard game
Chorus
But I won't let go
Of the world I know inside
(gonna make it be real)
Got a million dreams
That I will not see denied
When I finally believe in me
And you won't make me walk away
And you won't make me hide
And you won't change a thing
That I'm imagining
Cos I won't let go
Of the world I know inside
(gonna make it be real)
Got a million dreams
That I will not see denied
Gonna break away
From the weight that holds me down
(gonna float up on high )
Gonna greet each day
Like a jewel I just found
Oh, me and my cousin, one Arthur McBride
As we went a walking down by the seaside
Now, mark what followed and what did betide

"And temper their edge in the morning"
And the little wee drummer we flattened his pow
And we made a football of his rowdeydowdow
Threw it in the tide for to rock and to row
And bade it a tedious returning
And we having no money, paid them off in cracks

For we were the lads who would give them hard clouts
And bid them look sharp in the morning
Oh me and my cousin, one Arthur McBride
As we went a walkin' down by the seaside
Now mark what followed and what did betide
A night in television wonderland . . .
Just one more fairytale about some rich bitch
Lying by the swimming pool,
It's the golden school,
And life is easy when you make the rules.
Last Friday was the first time -
It only took about a half a minute
On the stairway,
it was child's play
The odds turn out even
When you give up believing in the
Chorus
Cold law, Steel claw,
Try to get on board you find the lock is on the door
Well I say no way! . . .
Don't try to keep me out or there'll be hell to pay!
I don't know who's right or who's wrong,
But it doesn't really matter,
When you're crawling in the gutter
it's a see-saw
A long hot battle with the cold law
Is what you get for messing with the
Steel Claw
The politicians have forgotten this place . . .
Except for a flying visit in a black Mercedes
At election time,
they cross the line,
And everybody runs to watch the pantomime
If they could see what's going on around here -
So many people hanging on to the edge
Crying out for revolution!
Retribution. . .!
The odds turn out even
When you give up believing in the cold law
Repeat Chorus
Sometimes I think I'm going crazy
Sometimes I do a line, makes me laugh,
Makes me want to take a joy ride
on the high tide . . .
Sometimes I'm contemplating suicide
Meanwhile Bobby's out in Benidorm -
I know he's making out with some sweet senorita
And they go dancing,
in the moonlight,
The odds turn out even
When you give up the believing in the cold law
The lovers' hour is here, the night is creeping down
This is the moment you've been dreading
Another bar-room in another lonely town
You wish you knew where you were heading
In everyone that you see
You see her
In every dream that could be
You see her, need her tonight
Chorus
You're feeling the hurt again
It's always the way
When the arrow goes straight to the mark
But try not to heed the pain
It's only a gentle reminder
That while you're apart... she's still
Deep in your heart, and it's hurting
Deep in your heart, still hurting
You feel it coming, it's impossible to bear
The thought of one more night without her
You start imagining her perfume in the air
From every woman round about you
You try to find relief in someone else's arms
She senses you're in need of healing
But it would take more than just any woman's charms
To wash away this empty feeling
In everyone that you see
You see her
In every dream that could be
You see her, need her tonight
Hey Mr. Businessman
Please take me as I am
I'm ready to go straight
but it's not easy
When you don't have no money
And if you take a chance
I know you won't be sorry
Hard times all around
Hard Station in the town
She came to me this morning
Came to my brother's place
Cards laid out on the table
Tears streaming down her face
So Mr. Businessman
Please take me as I am
I'm ready to go straight
but it's not easy
When you don't have no money
So listen to me please
I know you won't be sorry
Hard times all around
Hard Station in the town
Round here you get downhearted
It's more than a man can take
Friends making propositions
That was my first mistake
So Mr. Businessman
Please take me as I am
I'm ready to go straight
but it's not easy
When you don't have no money
So listen to me please
I know you won't be sorry
Hard times all around
Love hurts
You know love hurts
Not everybody knows the way a river flows
Not everybody sees the sun up in the sky
Maybe you and i should not try to plan our lives
If only what we could see what we hold in our hands
Love hurts 'cause you can't let go
Love hurts 'cause you need it so
Love hurts yes it hurts, but it's good for fools
Feel some pain now, still you wanna try it again
Everybody cries until the day they die
And everybody feels like they're the only one
Maybe you and i should not try to plan our lives
If only we could see what's in front of our eyes, yeah
Love hurts 'cause you can't let go
Love hurts 'cause you need it so
Love hurts yes it hurts, but it's good for fools
Love hurts every night and day
Love feelings never go away
Real love, it is here to stay with you
Feel some pain now, still you wanna try it again
You're dreaming, you got me scheming
You got me freaking, ooh love hurts
Love hurts, ooh yeah
Maybe you and i should not try to plan our lives
If only we could see what's in front of our eyes
Love hurts 'cause you can't let go
Love hurts 'cause you need it so
Love hurts yes it hurts, but it's good for fools
Love hurts every night and day
Love feelings never go away
Love hurts yes it hurts, but it's good for you
Love hurts i guess it's useless to say
Love hurts why won't this pain go away
Love hurts
Love hurts 'cause you can't let go
Love hurts 'cause you need it so
Love hurts yes it hurts, but it's good for fools
Love hurts that's true
Love hurts 'cause you can't let go
Love hurts 'cause you need it so
Love hurts yes it hurts, but it's good for fools
Love hurts every night and day
Love feelings never go away
Tell you I don't understand it' he said
'What are you hoping to gain?
Rocking this boat and you'll end up capsizing
Throwing it all down the drain
Said to quit chasing the end of the rainbow
Told me we'd find nothing there
But you and I know, girl, there's something else out there.
So come on with me, off on a journey
Far away out on the sea
Sailing away as the dawn tide is turning
Soon you and I will be free
Wo-oh darling I know there is danger
On the road to the promised land
But, oh, the beauty we'll find.
Lying here watching the world from a window
Seeing it passing us by
Knowing we're fooling ourselves when we think
We'll be happy up here till we die
Getting so good at inventing excuses
Hiding the feeling inside
But it's growing so strong, I can't wait any longer.
So come on etc repeat
Some getting by, by keeping their eyes closed
Some are too blind they can't see
Others live hiding behind stained glass windows
But that never helped you or me
Wasting the years stumbling round in the shadows
With no one to light up the way
But now we're together, we'll guide one another, so.
come on with me, off on a journey
Far away out on the sea
Sailing away as the dawn tide is turning
To a place where we both will be free
Oh darling I know there is danger
On the road to the promised land
Oh leaving our heartaches behind
Oh darling the beauty we'll find
When we rise up in the morning
Sailing out on the ocean
Just you and me babe
When we lie down in the evening
The last time I saw you
Was the spring of '75
And way back then I was afraid
to look you in the eye
Yes even then I found it hard to
To look you in the eye
Come a running to me with your soul in your hand
Like a child who knew no fear
With such a need to be alive
I was scared to get too near
With such a need to be alive
I was scared to get too near
You burned so bright into the night
A dancer in the fire
I wished I had your nerve back then
But I was scared to walk the wire
Yes i was scared to walk the wire
I was afraid to walk the wire
And now it's three years later
You're still eager for the game
But your eyes can't hide the times you tried
To live too near too the flame
Your eyes can't hide the tears you cried
When you got too near the flame.
But to you it makes no difference
Just how many times you fall
For you've seen the freedom through the flame
And you can't resist the call . . .
you've seen the freedom through the flame
And you want to taste it all
You burn so bright into the night
A dancer in the fire
I wish I had your nerve right now
But I'm still scared to walk the wire
Yes I'm still scared to walk the wire
I'm still afraid to walk the wire
The last time I saw you
Was the spring of '75
And way back then I was afraid
Of dancing in the fire
And even now I can't reach out
