Located in North West Arizona is the 378 square kilometre National Park known as the ‘Petrified Forest’ with a surrounding desert which shimmers in all the colours of the rainbow. There’s the Agate Bridge, a huge fossilised tree trunk which spans twelve metres wide across a gorge and the amazingly beautiful Canyon De Chelly. Situated in the Navajo Indian Reservation, the Betatakin Ruins are the remains of historical dwellings which were carved into the rock by their original inhabitants from the 13th Century B.C. Wild West fans instantly recognise Monument Valley where, between colossal, 300 metre tall monoliths and sky-high rocky needles, John Wayne and countless other screen heroes fought off Indians and battled with ‘baddies’. A natural sculpture formed from undulating waves of stone, Antelope Canyon is a palette of colour which teases the eye. From the surface, a gaping crevice is the only means of access, tempting the curious to enter. In bold contrast, the Grand Canyon is 1,600 metres deep and 16 kilometres long, the most colossal gorge in the world. The sight of this gigantic natural wonder is the exciting climax of any trip to the magnificent and majestic land of Arizona.

The city has characteristics of other western urban centers in which there are sparsely populated areas and a low density rate outside of the city limits. San Antonio is the center of the San Antonio–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. Commonly referred to as Greater San Antonio, the metropolitan area has a population of over 2.27 million based on the 2013 US Census estimate, making it the 25th-largest metropolitan area in the United States and third-largest in the state of Texas. Growth along the Interstate 35 and Interstate 10 corridors to the north, west and east make it likely that the metropolitan area will continue to expand. San Antonio was named for Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is on June 13, by a 1691 Spanish expedition in the area. The two individuals involved in the argument both pulled handguns and proceeded to shoot at each other. One suspect was shot by the other and was taken to the hospital. The other suspect fled the scene. Story: The former owner of Garrett’s Gun Vault in Victoria Texas pled guilty to possessing an unregistered Short Barrelled Shotgun. During the raid which found the illegal Short Barrelled Shotgun Federal Agents found one hundred seventeen firearms that were not properly logged into the bound book. Complaints from customers that had brought firearms to him for gunsmithing led to the investigation and the raid. The complaints related to the customers experiencing trouble getting their firearms back from the business. Story: In Lubbock A woman was found to be injured when police were called out for the second time in one day regarding gun shots at a party. No one was injured when the police were called the first time however when police responded the second time they learned that three men had fled the scene in a Chevy Impala after the woman had been injured. The woman was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries, and the three men that fled the scene were arrested. Story: In Forney Texas three suspects were arrested with two stolen vehicles, a stolen firearm, and other stolen property being recovered. It was a police response to a burglary of a vehicle call that led the the arrests and recovery. This incident seems to be the end of a string of burglaries in Forney ranging from vehicle to habitations. The article mentions a possible charge of organized criminal activity which would seem to indicate at least one more person was involved in the crimes, if not more. Politics Story: The Pittsburg Texas Independent School District was on lockdown after the FBI contacted local law enforcement regarding a possible shooting threat. As it would later be determined the threat was for a school with a similar name and not the Texas District. Armed faculty and staff are the solution to school shootings. Misc Story: The Alamo is hosting the “Firearms of the Texas Frontier - Flintlock to Cartridge (1836 - 1876)” interactive exhibit. The exhibit will showcase single shot firearms like those used at the alamo during the siege that made the site famous. Story: Midland County Sheriff’s deputy Mike Naylor was killed while serving a warrant at the home of a suspected sex offender. He was laid to rest in Hobbs New Mexico on Tuesday October 14, 2014. The loss of Mike Naylor is unfortunate and serves to remind us that everyday law enforcement officers put their lives at risk by simply doing their job. Highlights of the Oklahoma Transportation Commission’s Monday, March 2 meeting include a governor’s declaration of upcoming Work Zone Awareness Week in Oklahoma, presentation of national awards for Oklahoma Department of Transportation paving projects, an update on emergency repairs to a SH-11 bridge in Tulsa, awarding of a contract for the next Port of Entry weigh and inspection station in southern Oklahoma and approval of contracts for resurfacing and bridge rehabilitation on I-40 in Custer County, resurfacing of SH-102 in Pottawatomie County and widening of US-59 in Adair County. Secretary of Transportation Gary Ridley presented the commission with a proclamation from Gov. Mary Fallin declaring March 23-27 Work Zone Awareness Week in Oklahoma. Each year, ODOT joins other transportation agencies, law enforcement and first responders in a national effort to call attention to the dangers of working and driving in highway construction and temporary maintenance zones. Ridley, who began his career as a maintenance worker with the department, noted that 57 ODOT employees have lost their lives in the line of duty, more than any other state agency. Executive Director Mike Patterson updated commissioners on a successful project to repair and reopen the SH-11 (36th St. North) bridge over Dirty Butter Creek in northern Tulsa. The bridge was load posted in late January and then closed to traffic on Feb. 16 following the discovery of a void under a concrete bridge abutment due to a possible washout. A contract was awarded to repair the bridge which reopened nearly three weeks earlier than expected on Feb. 23. Two ODOT paving projects were recognized for earning national awards from the American Concrete Pavement Association. A $26 million pavement rehabilitation project on I-40 in Okmulgee and Okfuskee counties and a $4.8 million concrete pavement overlay project on the Okarche bypass in Kingfisher County were both honored with silver awards from ACPA. Oklahoma’s fourth new Port of Entry weigh and inspection station will be constructed on I-35 in southern Oklahoma. The commission approved a $9.6 million contract to construct the station between Thackerville and Marietta in Love County. While ODOT will construct and maintain the facility, Oklahoma Corporation Commission and Department of Public Safety staff will be responsible for weighing and inspecting trucks that cross the border from Texas. New Port of Entry facilities on I-35 in Kay County and I-40 in Beckham County are operational and a third on I-40 in Sequoyah County is nearing completion. Future stations are planned for US-271 in Choctaw County, US-69/US-75 in Bryan County and I-44 in Cotton County. The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority is planning a facility on I-44/Will Rogers Turnpike in Ottawa County and a Weigh in Motion virtual site is being designed for US-412 in Delaware County for a total of nine new facilities. More improvements are coming to I-40 in western Oklahoma, thanks to the commission's approval of two contracts for bridge rehabilitation and 10 miles of interstate resurfacing east of Clinton and east of Weatherford in Custer County. Commissioners voted to award a more than $17 million contract to widen nearly five miles of US-59 near Westville in Adair County. This is part of an ongoing effort to widen the US-59 corridor to four lanes between Westville and Watts. They also awarded a contract with an $11.2 million base bid and possible financial incentives for early completion to widen and resurface more than four miles of SH-102 near Shawnee in Pottawatomie County. In all, commissioners awarded 40 contracts totaling more than $111.5 million to improve bridges, highways, interstates and roads in 32 counties. Contracts were awarded for projects in Adair, Alfalfa, Carter, Comanche, Creek, Custer, Garvin, Grady, Grant, Greer, Haskell, Hughes, Jackson, Jefferson, Kingfisher, Latimer, Lincoln, Love, Mayes, McClain, McCurtain, McIntosh, Muskogee, Ottawa, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, Pittsburg, Roger Mills, Texas, Tulsa, Washita and Woods counties. As part of routine rotation of administrative duties among members of the commission, new officers were elected to preside over the panel’s meetings. District Two Commissioner David Burrage was selected to succeed District Four Commissioner Greg Love of Oklahoma City as Chairman. Burrage has served on the commission since 2011 as Vice-Chairman. Burrage lives in Atoka and previously served as a transportation commissioner from 1990 to 2002. Love, who has served as Chairman since his appointment in 2011, will remain a member of the commission. District Seven Commissioner Brad Burgess of Lawton was named Vice-Chairman. He was appointed in 2003 and reappointed in 2011. District Five Commissioner Todd Huckabay of Synder was reelected as Secretary/Treasurer. He was appointed to the commission in 2011.
