Counting the Cost - India's sliding economy
Counting the Cost - India's sliding economy
Emerging markets are having a tough time the world over - with falling currencies, falling markets and falling confidence. And a lot of the blame is being placed at the steps of the US Federal Reserve. This week on Counting the Cost, we look at the fiscal chain of command that is rattling economies across the globe - and its effects. The Federal Reserve has been trying to stimulate the US economy. Every month, it spends around $85bn buying bonds. That has the effect of keeping interest rates lower, and thus hopefully stimulating business. But the side effect is that returns on investments are not good. So investors rush into so-called emerging markets such as India and Brazil, because they can simply make more money in these riskier markets. However, the US Federal Reserve has warned that it is about to turn that money tap off, which would mean a reverse of the status quo, and all that investment money heading back towards the US.- published: 24 Aug 2013

studios of devotion
At the heart of every story is a question or series of questions...
Description
the roll of any process be it film making painting or any other art a form is to unravel what these question are. In our film - one that looks at the practice of devotional art in India - in the 21st century ‘questions’: What is sacred art, What is devotional art (is there a difference?) - can either be practiced within ‘our time’? Traditionally, devotional and sacred art are by definition ‘timeless’, both as principals exist outside and therefore, not constrained by, the ‘times’ or world we live in. It suggests that our world is ‘actual’ not the ‘real’. Our current ‘state’ - is but ‘Maya’ - illusion - a mere reflection of a true reality that is veiled behind the mundane world we live in. As is taught within the Bhakti tradition of north India - enlightenment and ones true realization is sought through ones work - devotion/seva (or service), be it painter, poet, carpenter, one simply does the work as a form of devotion - often this entails making something beautiful. The means becomes the end in itself - for in our ‘actual’ world we habitually question beauty - we are told this in every sphere of life - however perhaps beauty is the answer, not the question. So exactly how do Indian artists/craftsman negotiate this today within their devotional and sacred art practices? Not to mention their daily lives. Given the immense change that India is undergoing as it hurtles into the 21st century. India is now one of the fastest growing economies in the world. One would think opportunities abound as patronage shifts from temple and state to the middle class homes of metro center India – Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkota- how does this effect what is made and why? This films looks inside the world of the devotional art to see how individual artist continue to practice, against this ever-changing backdrop of modern India. Our journey begins with real ‘backdrops’ or ‘Pichhavais the Hindi term used to describe the large cloth painting that adorn the shrine of Krishna in the temple town of Nathadwara Rajasthan. And what we discover may well surprise - after all how can we reach beyond the veil ‘maya’ unless we engage with the world around us – the ordinary and the mundane - for a ‘devotional artist’ the struggle to get from one to the other is the very essence of their work – their ‘sadhana’ - their spiritual practice.

François Rousseau Gallery Opening Ogilvy New York
One of the most important topics in the world of global business is the story of the "emerging nations."
In a global economy, places like China, India, Brazil, Russia, Viet Nam and Dubai, among others, are affecting what we do in ways that would have been unthinkable not many years ago. Not just in a financial sense (although their impact there is substantial) - but in a cultural and societal sense as well.
François Rousseau on Amor Causa: Les Béatitudes
In December 2004, Paulo Pereira da Silva, President of Renova, asked me to consider a photographic project based on the Beatitudes that Christ preached to his disciples.
In Christian art the Beatitudes had been depicted for two thousand years only by implication: Jesus preaching the Sermon on the Mount surrounded by the twelve disciples.
The nature of the assignment, the universal message of the Beatitudes on the subject of forgiveness, purity, pacifism, poverty and love demanded it be set among a cross-section of modern-day cultures. I knew I wouldn’t be visiting a city with perfect race relations. And because of Rio’s reputation for violence, I was extremely worried about working there at all; I was warned not to go out in the street carrying or wearing anything that might arouse envy. Nonetheless, I had the feeling that in the melting-pot of races that forms the Brazilian identity I would discover a young society with a new definition of nationhood. Speak to any black person – man or woman – from the favelas (slums); they’ll tell you about their problems, about poverty and racial prejudice. Yet the basic structure of Brazilian society and its mixed-race culture gives the impression of a people living totally at ease with one another’s colour. If you have the chance, flick through the Brazilian TV channels. You’ll soon find out, if you admit that a high media profile is a measure of integration, that we have a few lessons to learn from Brazil. But back to that commission. The man who asked me to photograph the Beatitudes is deeply religious. Paulo Pereira da Silva admitted he was very much moved by my tableaux which reminded him of paintings of the Descent from the Cross and the Crucifixion.
The Beatitudes project was offered to me just as I was about to undertake an assignment of a very different nature in Los Angeles; now here I was being asked to portray humanist values, to reflect on the nature of the divine.

Two Minutes in India
I recently returned from a trip to India to film several news stories about the indian economy. I used a Nikon D7000, and as far as I know it is the first time a D7000 has been used for broadcast news. The camera held up well and helped me get everything I needed image wise.
The following clip is a short compilation of some of the people and places I filmed during my trip.

Vandana Shiva on the Problem with Genetically-Modified Seeds
For more go to: http://billmoyers.com/segment/vandana-shiva-on-the-problem-with-genetically-modified-seeds/
Bill talks to scientist and philosopher Vandana Shiva, who’s become a rock star in the global battle over genetically modified seeds. These seeds -- considered “intellectual property” by the big companies who own the patents -- are globally marketed to monopolize food production and profits. Opponents challenge the safety of genetically modified seeds, claiming they also harm the environment, are more costly, and leave local farmers deep in debt as well as dependent on suppliers. Shiva, who founded a movement in India to promote native seeds, links genetic tinkering to problems in our ecology, economy, and humanity, and sees this as the latest battleground in the war on Planet Earth.

Improving Economy in India अर्थव्यवस्था मे सुधार Rajiv Dixit
Rajiv Dixit was an Indian social activist. He started social movements in order to spread awareness on topics of Indian national interest through the Swadeshi Movement, Azadi Bachao Andolan, and various other works.[1] He served as the National Secretary of Bharat Swabhiman Andolan.[2] He was a strong believer and preacher of Bharatiyata.[3] He had also worked for spreading awareness about Indian history and issues in the Indianeconomic policies.[4] Life Rajiv Dixit was born on 30 November 1967 in Naah village of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Under the tutelage of his father Radhe Shyam Dixit, he was educated till the 12th grade in the village schooling system in Firozabad. He was influenced by the ideologies of Indian revolutionaries like Dayanand Saraswati, Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh and Udham Singh. Later in life, he began to appreciate the early works of Ram Prasad Bismil. His life was also dedicated to causes like stopping alcohol and gutka production, cow-butchering and social injustices. On the 9th of January 2009, he became one of the founders of Bharat Swabhiman movement. After his death, a building called "Bharat Swabhiman" constructed in Haridwar has been renamed "Rajiv Dixit Bhawan" in his memory. He worked with Prof. Dharm Pal to find the ancient technical knowledge of India through a survey done by William Adams in 1820. Additionally, he exposed the defeat of India from China in the war of 1962 and the mystery behind the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri. According to some source, as Rashtra bandhu Rajiv Dixit, a purely Swadeshi person, never used foreign products for any reason. Work Rajiv Dixit suggested that the Indian supreme court should declare money held by Indians in Swiss banks as national property so that foreign banks would have to legally hand over this money to India.[5] He fought various MNCs like Manforce, Cargill, Coca-Cola, Du Pont, Hindustan Unilever, and Colgate as he considered that these companies are draining the wealth of India, making it poorer.Nobody knows where he worked Movements Rajiv Dixit supported the movement of opening a chain of Swadeshi General Stores, where only Indian-made goods are sold. He believed in Swadeshi.[6] He initiated movements like the Swadeshi Movement and Azadi Bachao Andolan (Save Freedom Movement)[7] and became their spokesperson.[8] He addressed a rally of over 50,000 people under the leadership of Swadeshi Jagaran Manch in New Delhi.[9] He also took leadership of the programme held at Calcutta which was supported and promoted by various organizations and prominent personalities and was celebrated all over India on the eve of the 150th Anniversary of the 1857 war of Indian Independence.[9] He demanded decentralization of taxation system, saying that the current system is the core reason for the corruption in bureaucracy. He said that 80% of taxes is being used to pay the politicians and bureaucrats and just 20% for development purposes for the people. He compared the current budget system of the Indian government to the earlier British budget system in India, presenting statistics to show that they are the same. Recently he was working with Swami Ramdev in Bharat Swabhiman Trust as national secretary.[10] He also doubted the terrorist attack on the United States Twin Towers, claiming that it was stage managed by U.S. Government itself, and supported the claims of the Lone Lantern Society of the U.S.[11] He also said that "liberalization, privatization and globalization, the three evil faces staring at us today, have pushed us towards a suicidal state."[1] Presenting an exhibition on the violent history of colonialism in 1998, he argued that these were its modern forms.[12] He argued that modern thinkers have neglected agricultural sectors and farmers have been left to feed themselves and commit suicide.[1] Expressing his views on the Indian judiciary and legal system, he said that India is still following the laws and acts enacted during the British era and had not taken the burden of changing them as per the requirement of Indian people.[2] He accused Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, of being an agent of USA. He claimed that a huge stock of radioactive elements is buried in the Indian sea below Setu Samudram, also known as Sri Ram Setu. These radioactive elements could be used to produce electricity and Nuclear weapons for coming 150 years. He also accused that Indian government is trying to break that bridge, which is more than 7000 years old. Death Rajiv Dixit was in Bhilai,Chhattisgarh, to deliver a lecture as a part of his Bharat Swabhiman Yatra, where he died. His death was unexpected and the circumstances around his death are uncertain and the cause of his death is unknown. His death has been portrayed natural citing the reason of cardiac arrest. The fact that no post-mortem was done after his death and his blue-black body, however, speak a different story. The mainstream media was silent about his death.[13]- published: 01 Aug 2013
