Hong Kong - Megacities (Documentary)
Hong Kong - Megacities (Documentary) A peninsula bounded by more than 200 islands - only a handful of them inhabited, Hong Kong is the most densely populated urban region on the planet. In the recent past it has been rocked by economic and financial upheaval. Yet it has come through with some of the most high-tech, counterfeit-proof currency in the world, as well as some of the most complex bank building structures. Hong Kong has more billionaires per capita than anyplace on earth. This episode shows how such a small city accomplished such immense technological feats. The journey begins inside the printing facilities of Hong Kong Printing Limited and follows the currency to the Big 3 banks in Hong Kong, before it is then circulated through the economy.- published: 15 Jul 2013

They offer more comfortable seat than regular economy seat at slightly higher value, but still their business class is the best business class seat I had ever flown. I was actually upgraded to premium economy class, I often upgraded on Cathay's flight this was my 3rd long haul flight upgrade since Sept 2013. Tips for you guys to get a free upgrade is LOYALTY, and in Cathay you would better to enroll as Marcopolo Club member rather than just an Asiamiles member. You also need to fly overbooked (or full) flight as your change of being upgraded is higher than just an ordinary flight. You might also request for a special seating preference like extra-legroom seat (exit row seats or bulk head seats). The change will be higher if your requested seat was not available and the gate crew might upgrade you to meet your request. note that there was some spelling typo on the video. For the New York Times | By Jonah M. Kessel
In the winter of 2011, I visited the Foxconn factory in Chengdu, China, where many popular Apple products are made. However, I was not greeted with open arms. Foxconn denied any interviews and did not allowed us access to their facility. Employees of Foxconn we found outside the factory gates complained of grimm working conditions. (That report here: https://vimeo.com/35674511)
Over the year, the New York Times and other media outlets reported on this and Apple responded saying they would improve conditions for workers.
One year later, I returned to Foxconn with New York Times' Hong Kong Bureau Chief Keith Bradsher as well as factories producing for Hewlett-Packard in Western China, to see what had changed since our initial investigations. This time around, Foxconn in Chengdu allowed us to interview employees as well as visit employee dormitories. Their reaction a year later showed a culture change. While at HP, manufactories there gave us full access to work areas, recreational areas, dormitories and eating facilities.
This video documents what we found.

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport
Shenzhen stands at a crossroads. Already with an unsurpassable technology sector fueling the economic engine of China, the next great leap will be in ideas and services: Cultural Capital. Our vision is predicated on this future. The architecture for T3 Shenzhen Airport will epitomize intelligent environments; an architecture that embraces everything from life and work, to culture and ecology. Indeed the new terminal is poised to become the symbol of the new China. The “high-tech” architecture which has colonized emerging economies world-wide has had its day - a new architecture which resonates in culture, symbolism and an intelligent future has come to fore. The airport, perhaps the quintessential modern typology, has paradoxically found itself in a state of arrested development with the prevailing style being “high-tech”. An Architectural style emulating the aviation technology of the 1960’s, high-tech has since spread to become a worldwide cliché. Being the standard architectural response to the airport wherever one goes, this worn style speaks neither to the specifics of place nor to the specifics of experience. The spaces of high-tech are spatially and structurally homogeneous. We propose a 21st century paradigm. Instead of the bland monoculture of high-tech, we propose spaces for travelers that are locally diverse and unique yet globally coherent. These are spaces that humanize technology rather than merely represent it; spaces that are ultimately attuned to diverse needs, moods, and aspirations of the traveler. Consequently, we have fundamentally rethought the space of the Shenzhen Airport through the transmutation of a quintessentially earthbound material: concrete. Rather than the predictable pastiche of hi-tech materials, Shenzhen Airport will employ a traditional (modern) material concrete but fabricate it using the new conceptual paradigms in engineering and the technology of mass-customization in formwork and fabrication. The shift from standardized construction (Modernism) to mass customization will result in a range of architectural form, organization and effects for T3 impossible just a few years ago.

Shenzhen architecture biennale: Joseph Grima and Jeffrey Johnson
In this fourth movie made by Dezeen in December 2009 at the Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture, designers Joseph Grima and Jeffrey Johnson explain their Landgrab City project, which involved creating a farm in the middle of an urban square in Shenzhen.
Called Landgrab City, the project comprises a map of a downtown area of the city displayed alongside plots of earth that represent, to the same scale, the area required to farm enough food for the people living in that area. Each plot is represents a different food group.
Conceived as an experimental investigation into the full extent of Shenzhen's spatial footprint, the installation is comprised of two parts: an map of one of the city's dense downtown area, home to approximately 4.5m people, and a plot of cultivated land divided into small lots.
This land is a representation, at the same scale as the map, of the amount of territory necessary to provide the food consumed by the inhabitants of the portion of city sampled in the map, projected to 2027 (the year China is expected to overtake the US as the world's leading economy).
Each lot represents the extent of a single food group's footprint: vegetables, cereals, fruit, pasture (for livestock), and so on.In reality, of course, these agricultural territories are not actually clustered around Shenzhen, as in the installation, but scattered across China and contiguous regions.
As China's political and economic influence grows in range and complexity, increasing proportions of these territories of agricultural production have, in fact, migrated to far-flung regions of the planet, typically in Africa, Latin America, South-East Asia and Eastern Europe.
As is the case with many other regions of the world that urbanised rapidly in recent decades (such as the four Asian Tigers, the city-states in the Persian Gulf and even certain portions of northern Africa), one of the greatest threats to future stability and growth is perceived as the volatility in food prices on the international market.
In response, agricultural land – as opposed to the food produced on that land – has itself become the target of acquisitions: wealthy nations are purchasing, more and more frequently, substantial tracts of agricultural territories in other (generally less wealthy) countries.
More often than not, this phenomenon takes the form of a post-colonial land grab that enslaves vast agricultural territories of the planet to distant, wealthy urban enclaves.
The countryside is a vital but frequently overlooked category in the contemporary discourse around spatial policy, and its role with respect to the future of urbanism is more often than not neglected.
Landgrab City is an attempt to visually represent the broader spatial identity of the 21st century metropolis; it proposes a new spatial definition of the city and thereby a more complex understanding of urbanism, one that no longer considers city limits as the boundary of its remit, but instead looks beyond – even across international borders – to the spatial, social, economic and political implications of the planet's rapid urbanization.
