Finding Needles in a Growing Haystack: An Architecture for Intelligent Reporting at Scale
As we collect more and more data in the world, one of the major challenges is how to identify, summarize, and present relevant data to users. In this talk, I will present an architecture we have developed at Optiver to automate the identification of important changes in streaming time series data in a scalable way.
At Optiver, we provide liquidity on markets around the world, performing millions of interactions with financial exchanges each day and generating terabytes of raw data spread across multiple datacenters. Performance is critical in our industry, and every aspect of our business is continually changing in a pursuit of perfection. On the Data team at Optiver, we face the challenge of converting this raw data into a highly aggregated and refined stream of information that people throughout the company can use to make decisions and track our performance.
Even after refining this raw data, it is still impossible for people to look through every possible subset of the data to identify important changes. The problem also gets worse over time as trading execution times decrease and the number of products we trade expands. On the Data team, we have tried to solve this by developing automated, smart reporting tools that can scale horizontally.
In this talk, I will discuss the architectural decisions and implementations we have used to build our automated reporting architecture. This includes the use of online (recursive) implementations of Bayesian statistics for estimating metrics and detecting trends and outliers, NoSQL databases for scalable storage and evolving data schemas, parallel execution across a Mesos cluster, and publication of the reports through REST APIs. All implemented in Python of course!

You gotta see this very funny video of Ed Helms and Rob Corddry from their days at “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” – as they roam the Inside Edition newsroom during an interview.
The video was recorded in 2004, not long before Helms left The Daily Show for the American version of “The Office” television show and eventual blockbuster roles in “The Hangover” franchise and “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax”. (One of my kids’ favorites!)
Rob Corddry also launched into a successful career in TV and film after leaving The Daily Show... including roles in “Hot Tub Time Machine” and “Childrens Hospital”.
A little background for this video clip... Ed Helms and Rob Corddry were visiting the Inside Edition newsroom for a “traditional” interview about politics and the looming 2004 presidential campaign.
Jon Stewart was on the cover of Newsweek magazine at the time and “The Daily Show” as a whole was really exploding in popularity. The show truly touched a cultural nerve with its irreverent approach politics and brutally honest news coverage.
Helms and Corddry were a big part of that success.
Journalist Marc Peyser wrote that Newsweek profile titled: “Jon Stewart: Red, White & Funny”.
Anyway, stick around until the end of the video when Ed Helms and Rob Corddry unleash a hilarious string of profanities at me. All in good fun of course. (That’s what I tell myself)
Be sure to take note of Helms and Corddry crashing an Inside Edition story meeting that was being run by Executive Producer Charles Lachman – who enjoys a good laugh with the guys.

Rob (TV series)
Rob (stylized in promos as ¡Rob!) is an American comedy television series that premiered on CBS on January 12, 2012, at 8:30 pm (ET) as a mid-season replacement for Rules of Engagement, and ended on March 1, 2012. The series stars Rob Schneider alongside Cheech Marin, Claudia Bassols, Diana Maria Riva, Eugenio Derbez, Ricky Rico, and Lupe Ontiveros. The show was produced by Two and a Half Men's The Tannenbaum Company and CBS Television Studios. On May 13, 2012, CBS canceled the series.
Synopsis
The series follows Rob (Rob Schneider), a former lifelong bachelor and landscape architect with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, who marries into a tight-knit Mexican American family and attempts to be closer to them, often ending in disastrous results despite his good intentions.

William Robinson (gardener)
William Robinson (5 July 1838 – 17 May 1935) was an Irish practical gardener and journalist whose ideas about wild gardening spurred the movement that led to the popularising of the English cottage garden, a parallel to the search for honest simplicity and vernacular style of the British Arts and Crafts movement. Robinson is credited as an early practitioner of the mixed herbaceous border of hardy perennial plants, a champion too of the "wild garden", who vanquished the high Victorian pattern garden of planted-out bedding schemes. Robinson's new approach to gardening gained popularity through his magazines and several books—particularly The Wild Garden, illustrated by Alfred Parsons, and The English Flower Garden.
Robinson advocated more natural and less formal-looking plantings of hardy perennials, shrubs, and climbers, and reacted against the High Victorian patterned gardening, which used tropical materials grown in greenhouses. He railed against standard roses, statuary, sham Italian gardens, and other artifices common in gardening at the time. Modern gardening practices first introduced by Robinson include: using alpine plants in rock gardens; dense plantings of perennials and groundcovers that expose no bare soil; use of hardy perennials and native plants; and large plantings of perennials in natural-looking drifts.

In this talk, I will discuss the architectural decisions and implementations we have used to build our automated reporting architecture. This includes the use of online (recursive) implementations of Bayesian statistics for estimating metrics and detecting trends and outliers, NoSQL databases for scalable storage and evolving data schemas, parallel execution across a Mesos cluster, and publication of the reports through REST APIs. All implemented in Python of course!

Finding Needles in a Growing Haystack: An Architecture for Intelligent Reporting at Scale
As we collect more and more data in the world, one of the major challenges is how to identify, summarize, and present relevant data to users. In this talk, I will present an architecture we have developed at Optiver to automate the identification of important changes in streaming time series data in a scalable way.
At Optiver, we provide liquidity on markets around the world, performing millions of interactions with financial exchanges each day and generating terabytes of raw data spread across multiple datacenters. Performance is critical in our industry, and every aspect of our business is continually changing in a pursuit of perfection. On the Data team at Optiver, we face the challenge of converting this raw data into a highly aggregated and refined stream of information that people throughout the company can use to make decisions and track our performance.
Even after refining this raw data, it is still impossible for people to look through every possible subset of the data to identify important changes. The problem also gets worse over time as trading execution times decrease and the number of products we trade expands. On the Data team, we have tried to solve this by developing automated, smart reporting tools that can scale horizontally.

You gotta see this very funny video of Ed Helms and Rob Corddry from their days at “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” – as they roam the Inside Edition newsroom during an interview.
The video was recorded in 2004, not long before Helms left The Daily Show for the American version of “The Office” television show and eventual blockbuster roles in “The Hangover” franchise and “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax”. (One of my kids’ favorites!)
Rob Corddry also launched into a successful career in TV and film after leaving The Daily Show... including roles in “Hot Tub Time Machine” and “Childrens Hospital”.
A little background for this video clip... Ed Helms and Rob Corddry were visiting the Inside Edition newsroom for a “traditional” interview about politics and the looming 2004 presidential campaign.
Jon Stewart was on the cover of Newsweek magazine at the time and “The Daily Show” as a whole was really exploding in popularity. The show truly touched a cultural nerve with its irreverent approach politics and brutally honest news coverage.
Helms and Corddry were a big part of that success.
Journalist Marc Peyser wrote that Newsweek profile titled: “Jon Stewart: Red, White & Funny”.
Anyway, stick around until the end of the video when Ed Helms and Rob Corddry unleash a hilarious string of profanities at me. All in good fun of course. (That’s what I tell myself)

Robert Hoge has worked as a journalist, a speechwriter, a science communicator for the CSIRO and a political advisor to the former Queensland Premier and Deputy Premier. While he never went far with his professional lawn bowls career, Robert did carry the Olympic torch in 2000. He is married and lives in Brisbane with an eleven-year-old daughter who thinks his Olympic torch would make a really great cricket bat.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Twelve-year-old Ted (Zac Efron) lives in a place virtually devoid of nature; no flowers or trees grow in the town of Thneedville. Ted would very much like to win the heart of Audrey (Taylor Swift), the girl of his dreams, but to do this, he must find that which she most desires: a Truffula tree. To get it, Ted delves into the story of the Lorax (Danny DeVito), once the gruff guardian of the forest, and the Once-ler (Ed Helms), who let greed overtake his respect for nature.
