Bufotenin (also known as bufotenine and cebilcin), or 5-hydroxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-OH-DMT), is a tryptamine related to the neurotransmitter serotonin. It is an alkaloid found in the skin of some species of toads; in mushrooms, higher plants, and mammals.

The name bufotenin originates from the Bufo genus of toads, which includes several species of psychoactive toads, most notably Bufo alvarius, that secrete bufotoxins from their parotoid glands. Bufotenin is similar in chemical structure to the psychedelics psilocin (4-HO-DMT), 5-MeO-DMT, and DMT, chemicals which also occur in some of the same fungus, plant, and animal species as bufotenin. The psychoactivity of bufotenin has been disputed, though recent studies suggest it is similar in nature to 5-MeO-DMT.

Bufotenin (bufotenine) is also known by the chemical names 5-hydroxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-OH-DMT), N,N-dimethyl-5-hydroxytryptamine, dimethyl serotonin, and mappine.

Bufotenin was first isolated, from toad skin, and named by the Austrian chemist Handovsky at the University of Prague during World War I. The structure of bufotenine was first confirmed in 1934 by Heinrich Wieland’s laboratory in Munich, and the first reported synthesis of bufotenine was by Toshio Hoshino in 1936.

David Wilcock (born 8 March 1973 in Rotterdam, New York) is a lecturer, author, and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, California.

Along with Wynn Free, Wilcock co-authored the book The Reincarnation of Edgar Cayce? in 2004. Wilcock has appeared on several radio programs, including semi-regular appearances on Coast to Coast AM, and he had a role in the Syfy documentary 2012. He is a proponent of the theory that a large segment of humanity will undergo ascension in the year 2012. He also appeared in several episodes of the History Channel series Ancient Aliens.

Wilcock graduated from the State University of New York at New Paltz with a BA in Psychology.

Wilcock is the author of the 2011 non-fiction book The Source Field Investigations, which debuted at #18 on the The New York Times Best Seller list on September 11, 2011.

Wilcock has made some controversial claims, most notably that he may be the reincarnation of Edgar Cayce. In his book The Source Field Investigations (2011) he argues against the modern evolutionary synthesis by claiming that DNA and biological life emerge directly out of an energy source field.
