tabadoul orchestra : FAKRAH
The tabadoul orchestra, founded in summer 2010 by musicians from the world music collective Schäl Sick Brassband together with guests and the charismatic Egyptian singer Dina Gouda, presents their first live program at the same time as their debut CD: world wide wahab. The first of its kind in Europe, this program is dedicated to the most important composer of the 20th century Arabian world: the Egyptian Mohammed Abdel Wahab.
Mohammed Abdel Wahab, who died in 1991, was one of the most significant and innovative composers of the Arabian world. He is seen as the inventor of the Arabian film musical and introduced instruments such as electric guitars, electric pianos and electric organs to Arabian music, resulting in a completely new style. With the use of Latin American dance rhythms such as beguine, rumba or cha-cha coupled with the traditional sounds of an Egyptian string orchestra, his innovative orchestration and composition technique and a life's work of around 1,000 compositions, Mohammed Abdel Wahab stands head and shoulders above other Egyptian musicians. He like no other was able to combine the traditions of old Arabic music with the new, the oriental with the west, which not only led to fame amongst his own generation. Along with Sayed Darwish, Mohammed Abdel Wahab is considered to be the pioneer and innovator of Arabic art music. From today's perspective, he could even be classed as an early Frank Zappa of the Arabic music world...

Stephan Said - I Love the Life Of Freedom
Directed by Matt Kohn
This video was made in response and support of the Egypt uprising, although the song was recorded several months earlier. As of October 2011 it's received about 7,000 hits on youtube.
The song, "Aheb Aisht Al Huriyah," (I Love the Life of Freedom) has words by Egyptian poet-laureate Ahmed Shawki, which were first put to music in the 1930's by great Egyptian composer Mohamed Abdel Wahab. The music is produced by Grammy Winning producer Hal Willner.
Stephan Said is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual musician, global activist, and spokesperson. His sound fuses pop, rock, hip-hop, and world folk musics with a border-breaking message of unity. Said first rose to global renown as the 'troubadour of the Altermondialist (next world) movement when his antiwar song "The Bell," became "the first major song against the war in Iraq," pioneering the use of mp3's and music videos for social change for the internet generation. Stephan is American, his father is Iraqi and his mother Austrian.

Ayooni
"Ayooni" ("my eyes" in Arabic) invites viewers on a journey along the separation wall. A camera rolls by the fence in a horizontal movement, tracing after strips of posters hung on the wall in Arab villages and neighborhoods in the vicinity of East Jerusalem. Printed on the posters are words of love in three languages, side by side with images taken from old Arabic movies. The editing work relates to the separation wall as a reel of 35mm film and compares the movement along the wall to the movement of the feed wheel in a movie projector. Advanced computer manipulations based on the physical construction of the wall were used to weld the slabs of the fence to each other and enable smooth movement along the length and width of the fence.
Accelerating the movement works the wall like a zoetrope, an analogical instrument used for animation of frozen pictures by creating an illusion of movement, and this animates the posters hung on the wall. With the animation, the concrete is transformed into old film, which awakens the images appearing on the poster: the beautiful eyes of the Lebanese Miss Universe (1971) Georgina Rizk and the silhouettes of the famous Egyptian singer, Abdel Halim Hafez.
The work is accompanied by an original soundtrack based on the song 'Nebtidi Mini Al Hikaya' ('let's start from the beginning') which was performed by Abd El Halim Hafez and composed by Mohammed Abd El Wahab, two of the most important musicians of the Arab world in the previous century. The tune, which was later used also as the base of an Israeli hit "your brown eyes", was adapted and re-edited in relation to the tempo of the moving pictures in the film.
