The global ecology movement is based upon environmental protection, and is one of several new social movements that emerged at the end of the 1960s. As a values-driven social movement, it should be distinguished from the pre-existing science of ecology.

Background[link]

The movement's growth has been stimulated by a widespread acknowledgement of an ecological crisis of our planet.^[1] Its story has run alongside the environmental narratives that have reached popular consciousness. From the conservation movement at the beginning of the 20th century, then with concern in the sixties about chemical pesticides, the ecological movement was born with Murray Bookchin's Our Synthetic Environment and Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. There was a great deal of concern over nuclear weapons and nuclear power in sixties and seventies, then there was acid rain in the eighties, ozone depletion and deforestation in the nineties, and now climate change and global warming are the biggest concern for many. As well as the bigger global issues like these and species extinction, the ecology movement also encompasses any group wishing to protect our environment.

The ecology movement has evolved and branched out to different means of effecting change. There is the political branch with the Green parties. Organisations like Greenpeace were more radical, taking direct action against environmental destruction. Its views on people, behaviors, events centered around the political and lifestyle implications of the science of ecology and the idea of nature as a value in itself. "Ecology movement" is an umbrella term for different groups, ideologies and attitudes.

Contemporary manifestations[link]

At least since the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992, the discussion about sustainable development and sustainability has surfaced and partly replaced older ecological oriented ideologies. This and the establishment of a global anti-globalization movement in the late 1990s can be seen as follow-ups to the ecological movement. (See Rio Declaration on Environment and Development.) Additionally, there are many individuals and groups that believe in either a more political-lobbyist or more scientific, rather than activist approach.

Although Green parties have roots in the ecology movement, they are a separate movement. Political Greens have social justice concerns that go beyond ecology and ecological issues and matters. Today the term "ecology movement" is associated often with the more moral, more confrontational, and more rigorous stance taken by Greenpeace and other even more radical NGOs, e.g. Earth First, Earth Action, Sea Shepherd, in favor of the Precautionary Principle and strong fundamental preventive measures for biosafety, biosecurity and biodiversity. The methods of these groups often involve the idea of Direct action.

Radical-criminal factions[link]

A radical wing of the ecology movement opposes and actually illegally sabotages or destroys infrastructural capital of what they deem to be "Earth rapist" activities. This includes the Anarchist Golfing Association and the Earth Liberation Front, which are sometimes accused of terrorism. Even though no physical harm has come to an animal or human being, they have inflicted large economic losses on many economies. Their acts include the fire-bombing of a Forestry Service installation in Erie, Pennsylvania. Very few in the ecology movement would accept doing bodily harm by non-legal means to achieve their goals - they have no organized presence and are rejected by almost all players in the ecology movement. Some who hold property damage and bodily harm in moral equivalence, may reject this distinction, e.g. the US FBI which has labelled the Earth Liberation Front as a "terrorist group" (although the U.S. Department of Defense does not).

Duane Elgin (2010)

Duane Elgin is an American author, speaker, educator, consultant, and trans-partisan media activist.

Life and Work[link]

Duane Elgin was born in 1943 and grew up on a family farm a few miles from the small town of Wilder, Idaho. Helping his family grow an apple orchard as well as diverse row crops kept him busy working with the land until he was 23. He attended the Sorbonne in Paris for one semester (1963) and graduated with a liberal arts BA from the College of Idaho in 1966. He then received an MBA from the Wharton School of Business in 1968, and an MA in economic-history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969.

In the early 1970s, Elgin worked as a senior staff member of a joint “Presidential-Congressional Commission on Population Growth the American Future” in Washington, D.C. The task of the Commission was to look ahead from 1970 to 2000 and explore challenges of urbanization and population growth.

Elgin then moved to California and worked as a senior social scientist with the “futures group” at the major think-tank, the Stanford Research Institute (later to become SRI International). There he co-authored numerous studies of the long-range future for clients ranging from foundations and key government agencies to major corporations; for example, Anticipating Future National and International Problem Areas (for the President’s Science Advisor), Alternative Futures for Environmental Policy Planning (for the Environmental Protection Agency), and Limits to the Management of Large, Complex Systems (for the President’s Science Advisor). Recognizing the challenges to sustainable living in years ahead, and inspired by years of meditation and study of wisdom-traditons, Elgin co-authored the report Voluntary Simplicity with Arnold Mitchell. Published by SRI International and their Business Intelligence Program in June 1976 (No. 1004), the report circulated widely. The report was republished in an expanded version with a survey in the Co-Evolution Quarterly in 1977. In response to the survey, more than a thousand pages of letters were returned. These first-hand accounts became an important part of the book Voluntary Simplicity, published in 1981. Significantly revised editions were published in 1993 and 2010.

Years of institutional work on the challenges facing humanity left Elgin feeling he was perpetuating the status quo. Consequently, Elgin left SRI International in 1977 and, after a half-year of intensive meditation in 1977 - 1978, he has worked independently and collaboratively since then for a more sustainable and promising future.

In the 1980s, Elgin co-founded two non-profit and trans-partisan organizations concerned with media accountability and citizen empowerment. The national organization was called “Choosing Our Future” and the San Francisco Bay Area organization was called “Bay Voice.” Their mission was to give all citizens a larger voice in their community by using the public airwaves for mature, citizen dialogues or interactive ‘Electronic Town Meetings.’ (See below under ‘Media Activism.’) Elgin continues to write, speak, and encourage trans-partisan citizen organizing for using the mass media to support a new level of citizen dialogue about our common future.

Elgin has also pioneered in the field of online learning with more than two-dozen presentations and courses offered to colleges and audiences around the world.

In 2012, Elgin and a small team launched the non-profit organization and integrative website, Great Transition Stories whose mission is: 1) to gather leading-edge scholarship and wisdom that can help us understand our time of great transition and offer beacons of hope for a promising future and, 2) to make that wisdom available widely to educators, the general public, green businesses, storytellers, and more. Media Activism[link]

Over the past thirty years, Duane Elgin has co-founded two non-profit and trans-partisan organizations working for media accountability regarding the communication needs of citizens. He has worked to co-create a trans-partisan ‘community voice’ movement using the television airwaves that, in the U.S., the public legally owns in each metropolitan area. In 1981, he co-founded “Choosing Our Future,” a national organization with members in 26 states. COF objected to the renewal of licenses of all the major broadcast TV stations in the San Francisco Bay Area on the grounds they were not serving the communication needs of citizens. After the FCC sided with broadcasters and renewed their licenses, Choosing Our Future then created an inclusive, trans-partisan "community voice" organization called "Bay Voice." In 1987 these organizations put an interactive Electronic Town Meeting on the air in the Bay Area during prime-time, working with the local ABC television station. The “ETM” was seen by over 300,000 persons and six votes were taken from a pre-selected, random sample of Bay Area citizens. By the end of the hour, the sentiments of the Bay Area public were quite clear and the Electronic Town Meeting demonstrated the ability of a major metropolitan community to have a meaningful dialogue. • Visiting Scholar: Elgin has been a visiting scholar at Denison University in Ohio in May, 2004 (for a 5-day workshop on theme of “Simplicity and Envisioning a Positive Future”). He has also been a 'distinguished scholar' at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida in 2012 where he spoke to both public and student audiences about our time of "great transition."

Vandana Shiva (Hindi: वन्दना शिवा; b. November 5, 1952, Dehra Dun, Uttarakhand, India), is a philosopher, environmental activist, author and eco feminist.^[1] Shiva, currently based in Delhi, has authored more than 20 books.^[2] She was trained as a physicist and received her Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, in 1978 with the doctoral dissertation "Hidden variables and locality in quantum theory."^[3][4]

She is one of the leaders and board members of the International Forum on Globalization, (along with Jerry Mander, Edward Goldsmith, Ralph Nader, Jeremy Rifkin, et al.), and a figure of the global solidarity movement known as the alter-globalization movement. She has argued for the wisdom of many traditional practices, as is evident from her interview in the book Vedic Ecology (by Ranchor Prime) that draws upon India's Vedic heritage. She is a member of the scientific committee of the Fundacion IDEAS, Spain's Socialist Party's think tank.

She was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 1993.

Early life and education[link]

Vandana Shiva was born in the valley of Dehradun, to a father who was the conservator of forests and a farmer mother with a love for nature. She was educated at St Mary's School in Nainital, and at the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Dehradun.^[5] After receiving her bachelors degree in physics, she pursued a M.A. in the philosophy of science at the University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada), with a thesis entitled "Changes in the concept of periodicity of light". In 1979, she completed and received her Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Western Ontario. Her thesis, titled "Hidden Variables and locality in Quantum Theory,"^[4][6] was about the philosophical underpinnings of quantum mechanics. She later went on to interdisciplinary research in science, technology, and environmental policy at the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore.

Career[link]

Dr. Vandana Shiva has fought for changes in the practice and paradigms of agriculture and food. Intellectual property rights, biodiversity, biotechnology, bioethics, genetic engineering are among the fields where Shiva has contributed intellectually and through activist campaigns. She has assisted grassroots organizations of the Green movement in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Ireland, Switzerland, and Austria with campaigns against genetic engineering.

In 1982, she founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, which led to the creation of Navdanya in 1991, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seed, the promotion of organic farming and fair trade. For last two decades Navdanya has worked with local communities and organizations serving many men and women farmers. Navdanya’s efforts have resulted in conservation of more than 2000 rice varieties from all over the country and have established 34 seed banks in 13 states across the country. More than 70,000 farmers are primary members of Navdanya. In 2004 Dr Shiva started Bija Vidyapeeth, an international college for sustainable living in Doon Valley, in collaboration with Schumacher College, U.K.

In the area of IPRs (Intellectual Property Rights) and Biodiversity, Dr. Shiva and her team at the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology successfully challenged the biopiracy of Neem, Basmati and Wheat. Besides her activism, she has also served on expert groups of government on Biodiversity and IPR legislation.^[7]

Her first book, "Staying Alive" (1988) helped redefine perceptions of third world women. In 1990 she wrote a report for the FAO on Women and Agriculture entitled, “Most Farmers in India are Women”. She founded the gender unit at the International Centre for Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu and was a founding Board Member of the Women's Environment & Development Organization (WEDO)

Shiva has also served as an adviser to governments in India and abroad as well as non governmental organisations, including the International Forum on Globalization, the Women's Environment & Development Organization and the Third World Network. Dr. Shiva chairs the Commission on the Future of Food set up by the Region of Tuscany in Italy and is a member of the Scientific Committee which advises President Zapatero of Spain. Shiva is a member of the Steering Committee of the Indian People’s Campaign against WTO. She is a councillor of the World Future Council. Dr Shiva serves on Government of India Committees on Organic Farming. Vandana Shiva participated in the Stock Exchange of Visions project in 2007.

Time Magazine identified Dr. Shiva as an environmental “hero” in 2003 and Asia Week has called her one of the five most powerful communicators of Asia.

Vandana Shiva is working on a 3 year project with the Government of Bhutan, at the invitation of the Prime Minister Jigme Thinley, advising the Government on how to achieve their objective of becoming an Organic Sovereign country (the first fully 100% organic country).^[8]

Vandana Shiva has been interviewed for a number of documentary films including the One Water,^{[citation needed]}, Deconstructing Supper: Is Your Food Safe?, The Corporation, Dirt! The Movie, and This is What Democracy Looks Like (a documentary about the Seattle WTO protests of 1999)^[9].

Shiva's focus on water has seen her appear in a number of related films: "Ganga from the ground up" a documentary on water issues in the river Ganges,^[10], Blue Gold: World Water Wars by Sam Bozzo, Irena Salina's documentary Flow: For Love of Water (in competition at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival).

On the topic of genetically modified crops, she is featured in the documentary "Fed up!:Genetic Engineering, Industrial Agriculture and Sustainable Alternatives." Recently, she has been featured in the documentary The World According to Monsanto, a film made by a French independent journalist Marie-Monique Robin.

Vandana featured in the feature documentary film about the Dalai Lama, entitled Dalai Lama Renaissance.^[11]

Vandana featured on the PBS NOW documentary entitled On Thin Ice.^[12]

In 2010, Vandana was interviewed in the feature documentary about honeybees and colony collapse disorder entitled, "Queen of the Sun".^[13]

In 1993, Vandana received the Right Livelihood Award (also known as the 'Alternative Nobel Prize') "...For placing women and ecology at the heart of modern development discourse."^[14] Other awards she has received include the Global 500 Award of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1993,^[15] and the Earth Day International Award of the United Nations (UN) for her dedicated commitment to the preservation of the planet as demonstrated by her actions, leadership and by setting an example for the rest of the world.

Ecofeminism[link]

Vandana Shiva plays a major role in the global Ecofeminist movement. According to her article Empowering Women, Shiva suggests that a more sustainable and productive approach to agriculture can be achieved through reinstating a system of farming in India that is more centered around engaging women. She advocates against the prevalent "patriarchal logic of exclusion," claiming that a woman-focused system would change the current system in an extremely positive manner.^[20]

The view held by Vandana Shiva has been criticised as being essentialist by C. Jackson.^[21]
