Pittsburgh Collective: Scherzo Grosso || Radcliffe Institute
Scherzo Grosso is a concerto in four movements for cello and big band. It was written for Matt Haimovitz and the Pittsburgh Collective with funds from the Koussevitzky Foundation. While the influences in the piece are numerous, the main underlying thread is the memory of Ed Nelson (1962--2004), a trumpet player with the band and a close friend of several of its members. While a simple reading of the concerto's pairing might suggest that the cello represents the more "sacred" and the big band the "profane," in actuality each explores aspects of both idioms and the ground in between. The band often veers closer to "European" than "jazz," breaking down into chamber groups at certain points. At the same time, the cello often acts as a jazz or rock soloist (movements I and IV), or as part of the rhythm section as Deidre Murray and Abdul Wadud have with Henry Threadgill's groups, or Hank Roberts with Tim Berne, among others. Although the majority of the piece is fully notated, there are portions of the second and fourth movements left open for improvised solo trumpet, with more freedom correspondingly in the rhythm section's accompaniments. Soloist: Matt Haimovitz, cello; John Carlson, trumpet; Dave Phillips, bass; Brad Hubbard, baritone saxophone Learn more about the people and programs of the Radcliffe Institute at www.radcliffe.harvard.edu.- published: 23 Jan 2014

Out of body Experiences & the Monroe Institute
Out of body Experiences & the Monroe Institute
Franceen King and Whitley started their out-of-body work together at the Monroe Institute. Twenty years ago, Franceen ran her first Monroe Institute Gateway, which was also Whitley's first Gateway experience. Listen as William Henry interviews Franceen King about her years with the Monroe Institute, her wonderful personal experiences with all forms of OBE-related work, and her exciting expectations for the future of the Monroe Institute and its work. Dr. King also runs the Self Awareness Institute in Lutz, Florida, and offers expert guidance in all areas of consciousness exploration. Her personal adventures and her profound understanding of consciousness emerge in this exciting and unusual interview. Rarely does an expert like Franceen get interviewed by other experts like William Henry and Whitley. Don't miss this exceptional experience. The Monroe Institute (TMI) is a nonprofit education and research organization devoted to the exploration of human consciousness, based in Faber, Virginia, United States. Upwards of 20,000 people are estimated to have attended TMI's residential Gateway program during its first thirty years, with consumers of the audio industry founded on its research running into millions. Currently, many tens of thousands of people have experienced the residential programs developed by the Monroe Institute at TMI's campus in Virginia as well as across the US and the world, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, England, France, Germany, Japan, Romania, and Spain. TMI claims a policy of no dogma or bias with respect to belief system, religion, political or social stance. TMI was founded by Robert Monroe after he started having what he called "out of body experiences", now also commonly referred to as OBEs. It comprises several buildings on 300 acres (1.2 km2) of land south of Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. One of its activities includes teaching various techniques, based on audio-guidance processes, in order to expand consciousness and explore areas of consciousness not normally available in the waking state. In 1978, the U.S. military evaluated TMI and arranged to send officers there for OBE training. In 1983, it sent further officers- published: 19 Dec 2013

"One Day In Pompeii" at The Franklin Institute
"One Day In Pompeii" Creative Director Mark Lach talking about the exhibit which describes life in that city at the time it was obliterated by volcanic fury in 79 A.D. It is open now through April 27, 2014. http://www.fi.edu/pompeii/ One Day in Pompeii features over 150 precious artifacts on loan from the unparalleled collection of the Naples National Archaeological Museum in Italy, including wall-sized frescos, marble and bronze sculptures, jewelry, ancient Roman coins, and full body casts of the volcano's victims, many of which will make their North American debut at The Franklin Institute. The artifacts offer an insider's glimpse into the daily life—and tragic end—of this Ancient Roman city. From garden frescoes and marble statues to helmets and shin guards of the day's Gladiators, coins and currency to religious altars and shrines—all set in their original surroundings—you will experience Pompeii. Then, as the floors shake and the walls rumble, relive the volcano's catastrophic eruption through an immersive CGI experience, and witness the devastation left in its path. One Day in Pompeii tells the remarkable tale of the city of Pompeii, hidden from view and forgotten for centuries until its rediscovery over 250 years ago. The sudden disaster that destroyed it also preserved it and over time archaeologists have uncovered a unique record of its daily life—roads, buildings, municipal services, paintings, mosaics, artifacts, and even preserved bodies. Ongoing excavations at the site provide an ever-evolving picture of everyday life at the height of the Roman Empire.- published: 27 Nov 2013

Julie Orringer: Lies That Tell the Truth || Radcliffe Institute
Julie Orringer, author of The Invisible Bridge (Knopf, 2010) and How to Breathe Underwater (Knopf, 2003), discusses why we're compelled to be faithful to the past even as we transform it, and how those transformations can bring to light stories that might otherwise not be told. At the Radcliffe Institute, Orringer is working on a novel about Varian Fry, a New York journalist who went to Marseille in 1940 to save writers and artists blacklisted by the Gestapo. Fry was a student at Harvard College in the late 1920s, where he cofounded and edited The Hound and Horn, a renowned literary magazine that published Elizabeth Bishop, E. E. Cummings, and others. Orringer is conducting research into Fry's student experiences and considering how those experiences affected his remarkable later work. At a three-day retreat in upstate New York, Marina instructed Lady Gaga in the Abramovic Method--a series of exercises designed to heighten participants' awareness of their physical and mental experience in the present moment.
Marina Abramovic Institute (MAI) will be the first space dedicated to practicing the Abramovic Method, which prepares participants to both perform and observe long durational work.

limbic
DEUTSCH

ENGLISH
"limbic" is a Visual Music clip which reflects the emotional processing of music in the limbic system and the resulting reactions of the body (the so-called "chills"). It has been proved that musical attributes like the violation of expectations, the beginning of something new, a new cue or a recurring pattern are more often leading to chills. Those can be expressed, among other things, through a higher heart rate, twitching facial muscles, sweaty hands or even the well-known goose bumps. The film discusses how far chill-experiences are part of the evolutionary and/or the cultural development.
"limbic" was produced as a Video 2 exam for Prof. Dr. Heike Sperling and Andreas Kolinski.
Music: Johannes M. Arend (jmarend.de). Concept and realization: Manfred Borsch (mfred.net).
