Commodore 2031 Floppy Disk Drive Cleaning, Service and Testing Shugart model number 390 mechanism
I picked up this Commodore 2031 floppy disk drive in a trade deal from a fellow retro computer enthusiast for use with my Commodore PET 2001 Series computer. It has an IEEE-488 interface bus and uses 5.25" floppy disks.
In this video I clean up the metal case inside and out, service the made in the USA Shugart Associates model number 390 disk drive mechanism by cleaning the read write head and drive rails, then do a smoke test. After that I connect up the drive to my Commodore PET 2001 computer and format a blank disk to make sure it can write to a floppy disk, and then load the directory.
Some of the back story about this CBM 2031 disk drive: My friend picked up this drive along with various other Commodore PET computer items from a school liquidation sale 15-20 years ago, then stored t...

No Windows for Old Disks - IBM vs Shugart & Missing Media Descriptor Byte on 1980's Floppies
(A spoof on "No Country for Old Men"). In this journal entry I'll revisit the Epson SD-800 dual floppy drive. While connecting it to a 2007 Lenovo desktop running Windows XP trying to copy data from my collection of old 5.25 floppies over to my hard disk it didn't work. Turns out that floppies formatted in the 80's won't work on modern Windows (including XP) and so I'll need to find a way to boot into MS-DOS 6.22 and have it attach to either a HDD or USB drive to copy all of my old data over easily. Join me in some old-school MS-DOS driver configuration fun.

A Breakthrough in Automotive Materials - Autoline After Hours 171
What's the true cost of that Nissan LEAF your neighbor is driving? How about that Chevrolet Volt? We're not talking about the cost to own; we're talking about the cost to manufacture. Sandy Munro is a manufacturing expert, and as the president of Munro & Associates, he makes it his business to figure out the smartest way to assemble cars. He recently reverse engineered the Chevrolet Volt, and as our guest this week he'll be able to tell us what it really costs to build an EV and where that expense originates. Of course, we'll also be getting into the hottest topics in the news including a discussion about what impact the 2012 election results will have on the auto industry. Joining John McElroy to talk about this and a whole lot more is the Autoextremist, Peter De Lorenzo, and Joe White fr...

Shugart SA-712 MFM Hard Drive initialization
Found this 10mb drive in a bargain bin, and remembered having the same model in a 286 powered machine I used to use. What made it stand out in particular was the sound of the drive's spindle motor, which is just beyond definition. Many years ago I took this same drive apart to see what made this noise, and found that it was the spindle motor... But before it started to spin. Nothing else is in motion. Quirky little bit of nostalgia.
