Matthew Thomas "Matt" Ryan (born May 17, 1985) is an American football quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL). After playing college football for Boston College, Ryan was drafted by the Falcons with the third overall pick in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Ryan was Boston College's starting quarterback from 2005 to 2007, leading them to three bowl victories and a 25-7 record in 32 starts. He threw for 200 or more yards 15 times and is fifth all-time in school history in passing yards and in pass completions. He earned MVP honors at the 2005 MPC Computers Bowl.
In 2007, Ryan led his team to an ACC Atlantic Division championship and was named ACC Player of the Year. During his rookie year, Ryan started all 16 games for the Falcons and led them to the playoffs with an 11-5 season record. He has also earned honors as the 2008 NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Ryan, the third of four siblings, was born to Bernice and Michael Ryan, both Roman Catholics of Irish descent. One of Ryan's uncles, John Loughery, played quarterback at Boston College from 1979-82. Ryan launched a website during his senior year at BC called Mattyice.com, where fans and media have 24-hour access to video highlights, updated biographical information, statistics and other information about Ryan. He created an activity named "Folleyball" for NFL Play 60 at NFL Rush.com.

Ryan competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics, where he won a silver medal in Coxless four. In London 2012 he rowed in the Australian men's eight which placed 6th.
Ryan began his rowing at The King's School, Parramatta and was part of the First VIII crew in 2001 and 2002 that won the AAGPS Head of the River. The 2001 crew which also contained fellow future Australian senior national team rowers Nicholas Hudson and Sam Loch, also went on to win the Barrington Cup to be crowned National Schoolboy champions. In addition to this, the 2001 crew won the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. In 2002, Ryan stroked the Australian Junior Coxed Four to a gold medal at the World Junior Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.
Continuing to move through the underage ranks, Ryan was a bronze medallist in 2003 in the Men's Eight at the Nations Cup regatta (now the World Under 23 Championships) in Belgrade, Serbia. The following year, Ryan returned to the top of the podium at the World Under 23 Regatta in Poznan, Poland in an all-New South Wales, Coxed Four.

Matt's Italian mother, Isabella, disappeared when he was young. Following her disappearance, Matt's father started drinking more often. For a long time, Matt's boss, Stanley Wolfe (Shane Bourne), was the only colleague who knew about Isabella. In the final episode of season one "Raising the Dead", the case centres around the body of a woman found in a construction park. This is later revealed as Matt's mother. In the season two episode "Somersaulting Dogs" it is revealed that Matt has a new girlfriend called Emma Treadgold (Meredith Penman), whom he met at salsa classes.
Since then, Emma and Matt have moved in together. The relationship has issues, as highlighted in season 4, episode 4, where Emma and Matt have a fight at his work. This comes directly after the episode before, where he forgot about her dinner party, and stayed back at work instead. He also neglected to call. In season 4, episode 7, Matt states that he delayed taking the sergeant exam for Emma, but now intends to sit the exam as she has left for France.
