Martha Coolidge - Director's Reel
Illuminating the struggle of characters whether seen through a comedic or a serious lens is a hallmark of Martha Coolidge's work from her first documentaries to her remarkable pioneering achievements in feature and television films. Considered a consummate filmmaker she is also known as an "Actor's Director" due to her knack to inspire actors like Robert Duvall, Halley Berry, Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage to give very special performances. With an excellent eye for casting and her attention to detail Coolidge has brought stories to life in historic, contemporary and futuristic settings.
Early in 2009 American Girl released their first contemporary film American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong directed by Ms. Coolidge that premiered on HBO. Just recently this powerful and very honest drama on school bullying was awarded the National Parenting Publications (NAPPA) Gold Award, their highest honor. The film stars Sammi Hanratty, Adair Tishler, Annabeth Gish, Jennifer Tilly and Timothy Bottoms . The film realistically portrays the escalation of bullying behavior and through story development helps empower its young female characters to learn what to do to stop it.
While making CHRISSA STANDS STRONG Ms. Coolidge paired up for the eighth time with her husband, Production Designer James Spencer (Rocky, Leathal Weapon 3, POLTERGEIST & Introducing Dorothy Dandridge - for which he won an Emmy and an Art Director's Guild Award.) They enjoy their partnership on and off screen. "Our shorthand is always helpful and we compliment each other's talent."
In April Ms. Coolidge's thriller TRIBUTE adapted from Nora Robert's current bestseller, was aired on Lifetime. In TRIBUTE, Brittany Murphy plays Cilla, as she searches for a new life. She renovates her famous grandmother's country home in Virginia and uncovers a mystery regarding her grandmother's death becoming the next target of the murderer. With Jason Lewis, Tippi Hedren and Diana Scarwid the atmosphere is lush, the characters well developed and the action intense. The film was invited as a theatrical entry into the Shanghai Film Festival.
Coolidge's delightful comedy-mystery MATERIAL GIRLS starred Hilary and Haylie Duff, Anjelica Huston and Lukas Haas. The film tells the story of two silly "celebrity" sisters, who inherit their fathers make-up company and loose it in a corporate swindle, falling from "Riches to rags in a single day." Funny and smart it spoofs the cult of the "Celebritant" with talented actors like Ty Hodges, Brent Spiner, Obba Babatunde and Faith Prince.
For her hit romantic comedy from Paramount, THE PRINCE & ME, starring Julia Stiles, Luke Mably and Miranda Richardson, Ms. Coolidge leapt at the opportunity to create and contrast the rural and academic US mid-west with the exotic European lifestyle of Danish royalty. "The cast and crew came from the U.S., Canada, England, Ireland, Denmark, Germany and the Czech Republic and we shot in three different countries. It was an adventure in differing working styles to say nothing of communication! I learned that the language of human behavior is universal, but translating everything requires time and patience."
Ms. Coolidge's diverse range of projects has caused some to call her taste eclectic. She says, "I like to stretch. I certainly enjoy the action and hardware as much as the next guy, but my films all center on strong characters overcoming personal challenges in their lives. My greatest joy comes from working with so many talented actors." This includes Halle Berry, Robert Duvall, Chloe Sevigny, Richard Dreyfus, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Laura Dern, Michelle Williams, Diane Ladd, Brent Spiner, Mercedes Ruehl, Patrick Swayze, Geena Davis, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Obba Babatunde, Holly Hunter, Gena Rowlands, Frances McDormand. William Hurt, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. She also discovered great talents like Nicolas Cage (Valley Girl), Val Kilmer (Real Genius) and James Gandolfini (Angie).
"Comedy is a uniquely serious business." Says Ms. Coolidge. "On, OUT TO SEA Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Dyan Cannon, Donald O'Connor and Elaine Stritch not only danced up a storm but their irreverence kept us all laughing. I enjoy tackling different styles of comedy but my basic approach is to make the characters very believable and root their personalities. They can react very inappropriately to events but it has to come from somewhere real. What's funny to me is always the surprise of unexpected truth."
Her television projects have included the multiple Emmy winning Introducing Dorothy Dandridge with Halle Berry, and If These Walls Could Talk II, 1972. Both projects from HBO received nominations for Ms. Coolidge from the Director's Guild of America and an Emmy nod as well and won multiple Emmy's, a Golden Globe, the SAG award and many others for Ms. Berry. Ms. Coolidge directed two episodes of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation working with Roger Daltrey and Liev Schreiber. She also directed PSYCH with James Roday an

History
[edit]Partridge and his academy
The university was founded in 1819 at Norwich by military educator and former superintendent of West Point, Captain Alden B. Partridge. Captain Partridge believed in the "American System of Education," a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent necessity and developed the American system around that idea. His academy became the inspiration for a number of military colleges throughout the nation, including both the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, and later the land grant colleges created through the Morrill Act of 1862.[4]
Partridge's educational beliefs were considered radical at the time, and this led to his conflicting views with the federal government while he was the superintendent of West Point. Upon creation of his own school, he immediately incorporated classes of agriculture and modern languages in addition to the sciences, liberal arts, and various military subjects. Field exercises, for which Partridge borrowed cannon and muskets from the federal and state governments, supplemented classroom instruction and added an element of realism to the college’s program of well-rounded military education.
Partridge founded six other military institutions during his quest to reform the fledgling United States military. They were the Virginia Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Portsmouth, Virginia (1839–1846), Pennsylvania Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy at Bristol, Pennsylvania (1842–1845), Pennsylvania Military Institute at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1845–1848), Wilmington Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Wilmington, Delaware (1846–1848), the Scientific and Military Collegiate Institute at Reading, Pennsylvania (1850–1854), Gymnasium and Military Institute at Pembroke, New Hampshire (1850–1853) and the National Scientific and Military Academy at Brandywine Springs, Delaware (1853).[5]
[edit]Fire and hardship: Norwich in the 19th century
In 1825 the academy moved to Middletown, Connecticut, to provide better naval training to the school's growing corps of cadets. In 1829, the state of Connecticut declined to grant Captain Partridge a charter and he moved the school back to Norwich (the Middletown campus became Wesleyan University in 1831). Beginning in 1826, the college offered the first program of courses in civil engineering in the US. In 1834 Vermont granted a charter and recognized the institution as Norwich University. During the 1856 academic year, the first chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity was founded by cadets Frederick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. With the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, Norwich cadets served as instructors of the state militias throughout the Northeast and the entire class of 1862 enlisted upon its graduation. Norwich turned out hundreds of officers and soldiers who served with the federal armies in the American Civil War, including four recipients of the Medal of Honor. One graduate led a corps, seven more headed divisions, 21 commanded brigades, 38 led regiments, and various alumni served in 131 different regimental organizations. In addition, these men were eyewitnesses to some of the war's most dramatic events, including the bloodiest day of the conflict at Antietam, the attack up Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and the repulse of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Seven hundred and fifty Norwich men served in the Civil War, of whom sixty fought for the Confederacy.[6] Because of the university's participation in the struggle, the number of students dwindled to seven in the class of 1864 alone.
The Confederate raid on St. Albans, Vermont precipitated fear that Newport, Vermont was an imminent target. The corps quickly boarded an express train for Newport, the same day, October 19, 1864, to the great relief of the inhabitants.
After a catastrophic fire in 1866 which devastated the entire campus, the town of Northfield welcomed the struggling school. The Civil War, the fire, and the uncertainty regarding the continuation of the University seriously lowered the attendance, and the school opened in the fall of 1866 with only 19 students. The 1870s and 1880s saw many financially turbulent times for the institution and the renaming of the school to Lewis College in 1880. In 1881 the student body was reduced to only a dozen men. Later, by 1884, the Vermont Legislature had the name of the school changed back to Norwich. In 1898 the university was designated as the Military

Golf
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Golf is a precision club-and-ball sport, in which competing players (or golfers), using many types of clubs, attempt to hit balls into each hole on a golf course while employing the fewest number of strokes.
It is one of the few ball games that does not require a standardized playing area. Instead, the game is played on golf "courses", each of which features a unique design, although courses typically consist of either nine or eighteen holes. Golf is defined, in the rules of golf, as "playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules."
Golf competition is generally played for the lowest number of strokes by an individual, known simply as stroke play, or the lowest score on the most individual holes during a complete round by an individual or team, known as match play.
The origin of golf is unclear and much debated. Some historians[3] trace the sport back to the Roman game of paganica, in which participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. One theory asserts that paganica spread throughout Europe as the Romans conquered most of the continent, during the first century BC, and eventually evolved into the modern game.[4] Others cite chuiwan ("chui" means striking and "wan" means small ball) as the progenitor, a Chinese game played between the eighth and fourteenth centuries.[5] A Ming Dynasty scroll dating back to 1368 entitled "The Autumn Banquet" shows a member of the Chinese Imperial court swinging what appears to be a golf club at a small ball with the aim of sinking it into a hole. The game is thought to have been introduced into Europe during the Middle Ages. Another early game that resembled modern golf was known as cambuca in England and chambot in France.[6] This game was, in turn, exported to the Low Countries, Germany, and England (where it was called pall-mall, pronounced “pell mell”).[citation needed] Some observers,[who?] however, believe that golf descended from the Persian game, chaugán. In addition, kolven (a game involving a ball and curved bats) was played annually in Loenen, Netherlands, beginning in 1297, to commemorate the capture of the assassin of Floris V, a year earlier.
The modern game originated in Scotland, where the first written record of golf is James II's banning of the game in 1457, as an unwelcome distraction to learning archery.[

PROGRAM NOTES
Steinmetz “On My Way” (2010) – world premiere
Program Note by the Composer
Every culture has ways for its young people to find or choose a life path. In the US adults often ask children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” This is a question about career, but it is also about interest, passion, love—about what makes the child feel most alive. In some cultures people believe that every person selects a life purpose before birth and then forgets it, so elders must help children rediscover their purpose. Whatever options are available and however people understand the process, individuals and communities share in choosing roles for everybody.
In On My Way three groups of singers portray different aspects of choosing a life path. The children’s choir sings with curiosity
