In 1999, Juan Mercado kissed the Frog and the transformation from Nurse to Vintner began. A harvest at Pax Cellars, and another one the following year at Schrader Cellars, were enough for Juan to understand the basics of winemaking. "What if we bought fruit?" In 2001, Juan and Wendell Laidley founded Realm Cellars with for vision and mission to showcase the array of some of the Napa Valley's finest terroirs. Ten years later was a challenging growing season and some important decisions needed to be made. For Realm Cellars, 2011 will be also remembered as a year of "What ifs'" resulting in major decisions for a healthy evolution. A dedicated group of friends joined forces along with winemaker Benoit Touquette and consulting oenologist Michel Rolland to fulfill Juan's quest in pursuing the original "What if" vision. A record heatwave in Italy has accelerated grape harvests in the country and blessed local wine makers with sweeter produce. Grape harvests in Italy usually begin in mid-September - but this year many wine farms have already started picking the fruits. At Villa Germaine a family-run winery about 30 kilometres 18 miles south of Rome the annual vendemmia grape harvest started on Thursday - a week earlier than last year. While the amount of grapes that can be picked is much lower than previous years the scorching heat has produced sweeter fruits. The grapes are smaller and lighter only two kilograms per plant which indicates that they are full of must hence juicer and sweeter than usual. Annibale Gozzi an oenologist agronomist and owner of the Villa Germaine winery is certain it is going to be a very special year for wine production. We can say that this year s weather conditions favoured an excellent quality of wine of all our grapes typologies both white and red said Gozzi. Villa Germaine started its activity in 2003 growing both red and white grapes using organic farming methods. The vineyards are all regularly monitored through a small solar weather sensor that detects soil and air temperature humidity rain and wind speed. When the temperature is higher than usual as in the last few weeks the amount of sugar rises quickly fruit becomes sweeter the acidity becomes greater and the grapes need to be picked quicker. The final product is a more alcoholic and more aromatic wine. According to the Gozzi family economically speaking the better quality of wine is able to make up for the lower amount produced. While the high temperatures are a blessing for wine-production it creates difficult working conditions for workers at the vineyard. This has been an exceptionally hot year said Luigi Gozzi who helps his father run the vineyard in his spare time. We have had some problems because of the lack of water which means there is more dust and it s more difficult with the tractor to enter the vineyard rows and manoeuvre it. This year s harvest at Villa Germaine will continue until September.
