All six species of serow were until recently also classified under Naemorhedus, which now only contains the gorals. They live in central or eastern Asia.

The Chinese serow, Capricornis milneedwardsii
The Red serow, Capricornis rubidus
The Himalayan serow, Capricornis thar
Like their smaller relatives the gorals, serows are often found grazing on rocky hills, though typically at a lower elevation when the two types of animal share territory. Serows are the slower and less agile than members of the genus Naemorhedus, but they are nevertheless able to climb slopes to escape predation or to take shelter during cold winters or hot summers. Serows, unlike gorals, make use of their preorbital glands in scent marking.
Coloration varies by species, region, and individual. Both sexes have beards and small horns which are often shorter than their ears.
Fossils of serow-like animals date as far back as the late Pliocene, two to seven million years ago. The common ancestor species of the Caprinae subfamily may have been very similar to modern serows.

A Himalayan Garol eats Quercus Oak leaves in the hills of Uttarakhand. India.
The Himalayan goral (Naemorhedus goral) is a bovid species found across the Himalayas. It has been classified as "Near Threatened" by IUCN because it is believed to be in significant decline due to hunting for food and habitat loss.
Himalayan gorals are found in the forests of the Himalayas including Bhutan, northern India including Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, Nepal, southern Tibet, and possibly western Myanmar. They inhabit most of the southern slopes of the Himalayas from Jammu and Kashmir to eastern Arunachal Pradesh. In India and Nepal they are present at elevations from 900 to 2,750 m (2,950 to 9,020 ft). In Pakistan they have been recorded from 1,000 to 4,000 m (3,300 to 13,100 ft) altitude but their present occurrence in Punjab is doubtful. Group home range size is typically around 40 ha (0.40 km2), with males occupying marked territories of 22–25 ha (0.22–0.25 km2) during the mating season.
In Pakistan, a minimum of 370–1017 grey goral are distributed in seven isolated populations as of 2004.
Himalayan goral often form small bands of four to twelve individuals, although they are also known to pair off or, especially in the case of older males, be solitary. The animal is crepuscular, being most active in the early morning and late evening. After a morning meal, it often drinks and then rests on a rock ledge through the day. It feeds on leaves and associated softer parts of plants, mainly grasses.
The Himalayan goral is very agile and can run quickly. Due to its coloration it is very well camouflaged, so that it is extremely difficult to sight it, especially since it spends much of the day lying still. However, it is hunted by various predators. When threatened, the Himalayan goral will vocalize with hissing or sneezing sounds.

Endangered Red Serows in the forest of Nagaland, India.
The red serow (Capricornis rubidus) is an endangered goat-antelope, thought to be native to northern Burma. It has been considered a subspecies of C. sumatraensis. In the northeastern part of India, the red serow occurs widely in the hills south of the Brahmaputra river.
Belonging to a group known as the goat-antelopes, the red serow is a rather small, stocky bovid with long, pointed ears, a short mane, a relatively bushy tail, and short, slightly curved horns, which are marked with narrow horizontal ridges. As the name suggests, the coat is reddish-brown in colour, usually with a dark stripe down the back and a white patch on the throat. The underparts are white, and the mane is dark reddish. Some individuals are darker in colour, being black with a reddish tone, and it is thought that this species may sometimes hybridise with the Chinese serow, Capricornis milneedwardsi. The male and female red serow are similar in appearance, and both possess horns.
A number of subspecies of serow were previously recognised, but are generally now considered to be separate species. However, the taxonomy of the group is still not completely resolved. The red serow can most easily be distinguished from other serows by its red coat, and from the similar-looking red goral, Naemorhedus baileyi, by its larger size, distinct mane, longer fur, and larger, thicker horns. Although all serows can show varying amounts of red and black colouration, the red serow has black rather than white hair bases.

The "muskox" is an Arctic mammal of the family Bovidae, noted for its thick coat and for the strong odor emitted during the seasonal rut by males, from which its name derives. This musky odor is used to attract females during mating season. Muskoxen primarily live in the Canadian Arctic and Greenland, with small introduced populations in Sweden, Siberia, Norway, and Alaska.
As members of the subfamily Caprinae of the family Bovidae, muskoxen are more closely related to sheep and goats than to oxen; however, they are placed in their own genus, "Ovibos" . The muskox is one of the two largest extant members of Caprinae; along with the similarly sized takin. While takin and muskox were once considered possibly related, the takin lacks common ovibonine features, such as the muskox's specialized horn morphology, and genetic analysis shows that their lineages actually separated early in caprine evolution. Instead, the muskox's closest living relatives appear to be the gorals of the genus "Naemorhedus", nowadays common in many countries of central and east Asia. The vague similarity between takin and muskox must therefore be considered an example of convergent evolution.
The modern muskox is the last member of a line of ovibovines that first evolved in temperate regions of Asia and adapted to a cold tundra environment late in its evolutionary history. Muskoxen ancestors with sheep-like high-positioned horns first left the temperate forests for the developing grasslands of Central Asia during the Pliocene, expanding into Siberia and the rest of northern Eurasia. Later migration waves of Asian ungulates that included high-horned muskoxen reached Europe and North America during the first half of the Pleistocene. The first well known muskox, the "shrub-ox" "Euceratherium", crossed to North America over an early version of the Bering Land Bridge two million years ago and prospered in the American southwest and Mexico. "Euceratherium" was larger yet more lightly built than modern muskoxen, looking like a giant sheep with massive horns, and preferred hilly grasslands.
