"BILLY JACK" ACTOR TOM LAUGHLIN DIES AT 82
Tom Laughlin, the iconic star of the "Billy Jack" film franchise has died at the age of 82. It is reported that he passed away from complications with pneumonia. The "Billy Jack" films changed my life. They taught me how to be a better person, how to be non-violent in a violent world, that our government did not always tell the truth. They exposed me for the first time to the plight of the Native Indians in this counTry, to what happened at Mai-Li,; they were the first time I heard the Lord's prayer ever spoken. They changed not only me, but a generation of young people fresh from the ravages of Vietnam and Watergate. They gave us a direction and something to believe in. My favorite memeory of Tom Laughlin is the time I met he and his lovely wife Delores Taylor 9who co-starred in the "Billy Jack" films, of course. This was at the Armand Hammer Museum in Westwood, California in 2012 for a special showing of "Billy Jack" with the stars in attendance. Many of the cast were there. Mr. Laughlin and Miss Taylor autographed my DVD Box Set of the 'Billy Jack" films and we talked about the spiritual aspects that are inherent in the films. Just as one would suspect, Mr. Laughlin was full of the energy, hubris and bravado that he was known for, telling stories of how he bought the negative of "Billy Jack" from 20th Century Fox, took it to Warner Bros., "four-walled" the film himself (a practice by which he and Delores would rent out theaters and collect the profits on a film every major studio had passed on.) My second favorite memory is, of course, the films themselves. "Billy Jack" became the most popular independent film of all time. In my neighborhood, the entire group of us would go over and over again to see the film. We took special pride in feeling that we alone had had something to do with the success of the film. "Trial of Billy Jack" played in my hometown of Downey, California and we all bundled in the cold for hours on opening night to see the continuation of the story which we had come to discuss in detail and dream about. We were not let down. It's a terrific film. "Billy Jack Goes To Washington" I saw at the Bruin theater in Westwood. The week it opened, the line stretched around the block for hours.- published: 16 Dec 2013

'Billy Jack' actor writer Tom Laughlin dies at 82
Tom Laughlin, the actor who wrote and starred in the "Billy Jack" films of the 1970s, died Thursday, his family confirmed Sunday. He was 82. Laughlin's Billy Jack character was a heroic Native American ex-Army Green Beret who used his karate skills to fight racism and oppression. The second of the series -- titled "Billy Jack" -- was a low-budget independent film that became a box-office blockbuster in 1971. Laughlin's vigilante character defends a counterculture "Freedom School" from townspeople who harass and discriminate against the Native American students. The film was criticized by those who saw its central theme as a message that violence was an answer to injustice. Laughlin resorted to renting theaters himself to show the film after Hollywood studios refused to distribute it. The Billy Jack character first appeared in "The Born Losers" in 1967, fighting a motorcycle gang. Laughlin co-wrote and directed the film. Laughlin later attempted a political career, putting his name on presidential primary ballots in 1992, 2004 and 2008. Laughlin's acting career began with TV and film roles in the 1950s, including a "lover boy" role in Sandra Dee's 1959 beach movie "Gidget." His wife of 60 years, Delores Taylor, also acted in his "Billy Jack" films. Laughlin died near his Thousand Oaks, California, home Thursday, his family said. A tribute to Tom Laughlin aka 'Billy Jack'. The great actor Tom Laughlin of Billy Jack fame died over the week and I have noticed lots of nice articles and comments about him, but felt most of them didn't really understand what "Billy Jack" did for Martial Arts and the youth of America in the 70's. Most of my readers and video viewers are too young to have been around when the movie Billy Jack first came out and have no idea what the actual influence of the movie meant. Billy Jack was the first American made movie to feature the sport of Karate in an action movie. The Kung Fu movies had been around forever, and they always featured the same guys getting beat up several or hundreds of times in the same movie by the Kung Fu Master. No blood, not damage, and nothing realistic. But then came Billy Jack. When Billy kicked the bad guy in the head, knocked him out, and then proceeded to beat up 10 other bad guys, it was indeed the 'kick hear round the world'. For the first time people and especially the youth in America say 'real karate ' in a movie and how it could be used against bad guys to stop them cold in their tracks...and as Billy Jack said 'there's not a damm thing you can do about it'. Real Karate had come to America and there was not a damm thing anyone could do about it. Karate schools had to close their doors because they couldn't hold all the adult students coming into the school. Within a year Enter the Dragon came out and thus came out and then the kids started coming to karate schools and now 22 million children in America take Karate and learn valuable life lessons. Tom Laughlin was one of my heroes when I was in my teens and come to think of it...he still is today. Here is a funny thing about getting older. When Billy Jack came out, all the kids who saw the movie cheered for the kids in the movie against the 'bad guys'...but looking back now, those kids were totally jerks and the bad guys were probably right about not letting them do their 'hippy' love and peace crap.
