In Greenland, Melting Ice Caps May Actually Be a Good Thing
Greenland Goes Green (2007): How the melting of Arctic ice is spurring an agricultural resurgence in Greenland (but reindeer herding is now more complicated than before the melt) For downloads and more information visit http://journeyman.tv/57542/short-films/greenland-goes-green.html Greenland's ice caps are melting faster than predicted -- and local farmers couldn't be happier. Thanks to rising temperatures, they can now grow new crops and raise cattle. "I really like my cattle. They've very gentle", boasts farmer Sofus Frederiksen. For the first time since the Vikings, farmers can now raise cattle. Warmer seas are bringing huge catches of cod and growing seasons are up to a month longer. "A little bit of extra warmth is good for us", states agricultural consultant Kenneth Hoegh. "We're growing things we would have hesitated to grow in the past". But not all farmers are happy. With so little snow, Stefan Magnusson finds it hard to herd his reindeer. Previously, he used a snowmobile but now he has to do it by helicopter. Greenland's Mega Canyon
Greenland's Mega Canyon
Hidden for all of human history, a 460 mile long canyon has been discovered below Greenland's ice sheet. Using radar data from NASA's Operation IceBridge and other airborne campaigns, scientists led by a team from the University of Bristol found the canyon runs from near the center of the island northward to the fjord of the Petermann Glacier. For more information: nasa.gov/content/goddard/nasa-data-reveals-mega-canyon-under-greenland-ice#.Uh9xrxvku9Q For an HD download of this video: http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/goto?11354 To download more Operation IceBridge videos: http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/Gallery/OIB.html IceBridge, a six-year NASA mission, is the largest airborne survey of Earth's polar ice ever flown. It will yield an unprecedented three-dimensional view of Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, ice shelves and sea ice. These flights will provide a yearly, multi-instrument look at the behavior of the rapidly changing features of the Greenland and Antarctic ice. Data collected during IceBridge will help scientists bridge the gap in polar observations between NASA's Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) -- in orbit since 2003 -- and ICESat-2, planned for late 2015. ICESat stopped collecting science data in 2009, making IceBridge critical for ensuring a continuous series of observations. IceBridge will use airborne instruments to map Arctic and Antarctic areas once a year. The first IceBridge flights were conducted in March/May 2009 over Greenland and in October/November 2009 over Antarctica. Other smaller airborne surveys around the world are also part of the IceBridge campaign.- published: 29 Aug 2013

Greenland is, by area, the world's largest island, yet with a population of under 60,000, it is the least densely populated dependency or country in the world. In May 2012, Ben Saunders, Martin Hartley and Alastair Humphreys spent 14 days in Greenland on a training expedition. This was preparation for their expedition in Antarctica next year.
In October 2013 Ben and his team mates will attempt to make the first return journey to the South Pole on foot. At 1,800 miles it will be the longest unsupported polar journey in history. For more information visit bensaunders.com

Destination Arctic Circle in Greenland is Rough. Real. Remote., and in August 2012 three friends, Petr, Arne and Natasha, took an epic adventure trip through the region.
They biked the ice cap, fly fished in rivers full of arctic char, stayed in a small village, learnt about street life in the city, kayaked the long fjords, and even ate seal.
What they found out was - Greenland will give your adventurous, traveling spirit a home.

Greenland Expedition
In the last 100 years, twelve people have stood on the moon, more than 500 have been into space, and more than five thousand have climbed Everest. Yet the journey Captain Scott and his team died trying to complete a century ago remains unrealised. No one has ever walked from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again.
In 2012, the year of the London Olympics and the Queen’s 60th Jubilee, Ben Saunders, Alastair Humphreys and Martin Hartley take on arguably the most ambitious polar expedition in the last century: the four-month Scott 2012 – the first return journey to the South Pole on foot, and at 1,800 miles, the longest unsupported polar journey in history.
The Scott 2012 Expedition will complete Captain Scott's ill-fated journey to the South Pole 100 years ago.
The team recently returned from a training expedition in Greenland.

Greenland's business boom
Greenland's business boom
Despite being one of the remotest and most inaccessible corners of the planet, Greenland is on the cusp of a vast boom in oil and minerals that may change life for its 60,000 people forever, says Colin Freeman. It covers an area the size of Western Europe, but has less than the population of an small English town. All but five per cent of its land mass is covered by snow and ice, and there is no road or rail network at all. Yet despite being one of the remotest and most inaccessible corners of the planet, Greenland is on the cusp of a vast boom in oil and minerals that may change life for its 60,000 people forever. From oil and gas, through to precious stones and rare metals that are used in everything from iPhones through to wind-turbines, the land on the top of the world is shaping to become the globe's final frontier. Here, Sunday Telegraph chief foreign correspondent Colin Freeman and cameraman Julian Simmonds report from the capital, Nuuk - the tiny town of 15,000 that is on the verge of an unprecedented boom. Climate Change 2013: Greenland Ice Sheet & Northern Polar Jet Stream - Peter Sinclair
New climate change science explained by Peter Sinclair, just back from a scientific expedition to the Greenland Ice Sheet. Sinclair explains the feedback effects of melting ice, and the impacts on the northern polar jet stream and mean sea level. Sinclair leads educators on climate science and created the Climate Denial Crock of the Week video series, which tackles myths about global warming, the greenhouse effect, and carbon dioxide pollution. Sinclair proposes moving towards wind and solar as the key to jobs and future energy needs. Recorded, edited, and published by Aaron Wissner of LocalFuture.org- published: 23 Jul 2013
