Protests in Ukraine have been happening for months now with the nation split on whether it should sign a trade agreement with Russia or the European Union. However, after a law restricting public demonstrations was passed, there were pockets of violence between riot police and protesters. Opposition leaders Vitali Klitschko and Arseniy Yatsenyuk have appealed for calm and the Interior Ministry has blamed the violence on provocateurs. But how did it all begin?
