Shannan may refer to:
Shannan (simplified Chinese: 陕南; traditional Chinese: 陝南; pinyin: Shǎnnán) is a region referring to the southern portion of Shaanxi province, China. Its name derives from the abbreviation of the province (陕/陝), combined with its geographical location within the province (南).
Much of the region is south of the Qin Mountains as well, and for this reason it was for long part of varying kingdoms known as Shu, which also included parts of the Sichuan Basin. In the Yuan Dynasty, the area began to be merged with what is the Guanzhong Plain to form Shaanxi Province. This barrier has also created major differences in climate, cultural traditions and language between Shannan and the central and northern parts of Shaanxi, and thus there is some similarity between Shannan and Sichuan.
Shannan belongs to the group of Northern Chinese dialects, and forms a transition between the Sichuan and Northwest dialects. For the most part, the dialects of Shannan are divided into the Qinlong and Guanzhong dialects of Zhongyuan Mandarin. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties a large number of people migrating from Hubei, with those from the mountains especially bringing Southwestern Mandarin to the region.
Objection may refer to:
"Objection (Tango)" is a song recorded by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira for her fifth studio album and first English-language album Laundry Service (2001). It was the first song Shakira wrote in English after being encouraged by American singer Gloria Estefan to record material in the language. She also produced the track along with Lester Mendez. "Objection (Tango)" musically combines elements of pop rock and tango, and contains instrumentation from the bandoneón and guitar. Through the lyrics of the song, Shakira aims to end a love triangle she is a part of. The song was released as the third single from the album on 6 July 2002. A Spanish version of the song, entitled "Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango)", was also recorded by the singer.
Upon its release, "Objection (Tango)" received generally favourable reviews from music critics, some of whom found it similar to the work of American new wave band The B-52's. Commercially, "Objection (Tango)" was a success and peaked inside the top ten of record charts of various countries such as Australia, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands and France. The song became the last single from the album to chart in the United Kingdom and on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States, reaching numbers 17 and 55, respectively. "Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango)" charted inside the top ten of the US Billboard Latin Pop Airplay and Latin Tropical/Salsa Airplay charts. "Objection (Tango)" was certified platinum and gold in Australia and France by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) and Syndicat National de l'Édition Phonographique (SNEP), respectively.
In informal logic an objection (also called expostulation or refutation), is a reason arguing against a premise, lemma, or main contention. An objection to an objection is known as a rebuttal.
The lyceum is a category of educational institution defined within the education system of many countries, mainly in Europe. The definition varies between countries; usually it is a type of secondary school.
"Lyceum" is a Latin rendering of the Ancient Greek Λύκειον ("Lykeion"), the name of a gymnasium in Classical Athens dedicated to Apollo Lyceus. This original Lyceum is remembered as the location of the peripatetic school of Aristotle. Some countries derive the name for their modern schools from the Latin but use the Greek name for the ancient school: for example, Dutch has "Lykeion" (ancient) and "Lyceum" (modern), both rendered "lyceum" in English (note that in classical Latin the "C" in lyceum was always pronounced as a K, not a soft C, as in modern English).
This name, Lycée, was retrieved and utilized by Napoleon in 1802 to name the main secondary education establishments. From France the name spread in many countries influenced by French culture.
The Goa Lyceum (Portuguese: Liceu de Goa) in Panaji, Goa - established in 1854, following the Portuguese model - was the first public secondary school in the state, then a Portuguese territory. Later, the Goa Lyceum received the official title of Liceu Nacional Afonso de Albuquerque (Afonso de Albuquerque National Lyceum).
The Lyceum (Ancient Greek: Λύκειον, Lykeion) was a gymnasium and before that a public meeting place in a grove of trees in Classical Athens. The grove was named in honor of its patron Apollo Lyceus ("Apollo as a wolf" or "Apollo in the form of a wolf"). Though best known for its connection with Aristotle, the Lyceum was in existence long before his founding the Peripatetic school there in 334 / 335 BCE and continued long after his flight from Athens in 323 BCE until the Roman general Sulla sacked Athens in 86 BCE.
The remains of the Lyceum were discovered in modern Athens in 1996 in a park behind the Hellenic Parliament.
Speculation suggests that Pisistratus or Pericles may have originally initiated the building of the Lyceum as a gymnasium in the 6th or 5th centuries BCE, though the Lyceum grounds would have predated the gymnasium. In the early years of the Lyceum the head of the Greek army was said to have had an office there, which would have made it easy for him to be involved in the military training and exercises for which the grounds were used. The Lyceum’s use as a recreational gym and military training base is attested by the existence of wrestling rings, a racetrack, and seats for athlothetai, the judges of athletic events.
