Winnipeg ⁱ/ˈwɪnɪpɛɡ/ is the capital and largest city of Manitoba, Canada, and is the primary municipality of the Winnipeg Capital Region, with more than half of Manitoba's population. It is located near the longitudinal centre of North America, at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers (a point commonly known as The Forks).

The name "Winnipeg" comes from the Cree for "muddy waters". The Winnipeg area was a trading centre for Aboriginal peoples prior to the arrival of Europeans. The first fort was built there in 1738 by French traders. A settlement was later founded by the Selkirk settlers in 1812, the nucleus of which was incorporated as the City of Winnipeg in 1873 with a population of 1,869. Winnipeg is the seventh-largest municipality in Canada, with a population of 663,617 in the Canada 2011 Census.

Winnipeg has a diversified economy, with sectors in finance, manufacturing, food and beverage production, culture, retail and tourism. Winnipeg is a major transportation hub, served by Richardson International Airport. The city has railway connections to the United States and Eastern and Western Canada through three Class I rail carriers.

Brendan Gallagher (born May 6, 1992) is a Canadian junior ice hockey winger and captain for the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 5th round (147th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. During his four-year junior career, he has received WHL West First All-Star Team honours (2010–11) and has become the Giants' all-time leading goal- and point-scorer. Internationally, he has won a bronze medal with Canada at the 2012 IIHF U20 Championships.

Playing in the South Delta Minor Hockey Association, Gallagher was selected in the ninth round of the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft by the Vancouver Giants. He joined the Giants for his WHL rookie season in 2008–09. He scored his first WHL goal against goaltender Kevin Armstrong on September 27, 2008, in a 7–3 win against the Prince George Cougars. After finishing the regular season with 10 goals and 31 points over 52 games, he added 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) in 16 post-season contests, as the Giants were eliminated in the semifinals by the Kelowna Rockets. The following season, Gallgher improved to 81 points over 72 games, ranking second among Giants players, behind Craig Cunningham, while his 41 goals were a team-high. Gallagher's efforts continued in the post-season, helping the Giants to the semifinals for his second consecutive year with the club. He registered 21 points (11 goals and 10 assists) in 16 games, second in team-scoring and fifth in the league, as Vancouver was eliminated by the Tri-City Americans.

Winnipeg's Most is a hip hop group made up of the MCs Jon-C (Billy Pierson), Charlie Fettah (Tyler Rogers), and Brooklyn (Jamie Prefontaine). They are based in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jon-C and Brooklyn are both Aboriginal artists, and the group was recently featured in the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation documentary series 8th fire.

The group debuted in the summer of 2010 with the hits All That I Know and Bang Bang, taken from their self-titled debut studio album; released in June 2010, the album was produced by the Juno nominated producers Stomp and Jay Mak of RezOfficial Music. These initial singles spawned videos directed by Stuey Kubrick and received significant airplay on Canada's Much Music. The group won numerous Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards in 2010, including the award for Best New Artist, and they won six APCMA's in 2011.

In early June of 2010, Winnipeg's Most released their first project to the public: a pre-album promotional mixtape titled "Northside Connection." The mixtape featured artists like Blu, Ed E Buk, Zeek Illa, Bubblz, and Lady Sedution. This release was immediately popular both online and in the city of Winnipeg, and in the wake of this success, the group released two singles to the Winnipeg radio station Streetz FM: All That I Know and On These Streets. These songs quickly hit number one on the station's top 10 chart. This radio play, combined with the thousands of online downloads of the promotional mixtape, quickly established Winnipeg's Most as one of the most revered hip hop group to ever emerge from Winnipeg. Nail Railovich Yakupov (Russian: Наиль Раилович Якупов, Tatar Cyrillic: Наил Раил улы Якупов, Latin: Nail Rail uli Yakupov; born October 6, 1993) is a Russian junior ice hockey right winger currently playing for the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Besides being the consensus early favourite for top pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Yakupov, a Tatar, and a Muslim also represents the first potential breakout hockey star from the Republic of Tatarstan (though there have been other NHLers from this region), a federal subject of the Russian Federation, located 500 miles east of Moscow.

Yakupov was selected second overall by the Sarnia Sting in the 2010 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft. Prior to this, he played in the Russian Minor Hockey League (MHL) for his hometown team, the Reaktor Nizhnekamsk, but thought that trying to join the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) would be a quicker path to his dream to play in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Yakupov scored his first OHL goal against the Windsor Spitfires on September 24, 2010. After winning OHL Rookie of the Month for the month of October, Yakupov participated in the November 11 game of the Subway Super Series for Team Russia, at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario; Russia lost the game 4-0.

Zach Bogosian (born July 15, 1990) is an American professional ice hockey defenseman currently playing for the Winnipeg Jets. The first person of Armenian descent to play in the NHL, Bogosian attended Cushing Academy in Massachusetts before he joined the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 2006. He played two seasons in the OHL, and was nominated for the Red Tilson Trophy as the league's most outstanding player in his second season. Bogosian was regarded as a complete, physical defenseman who could contribute on both offense and defense; he was rated as one of the top players heading into the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, where the Atlanta Thrashers selected him third overall. He signed a contract with the team a few weeks after the draft and began the season with the Thrashers, though he missed several weeks of his rookie year due to injury. In his second season, he tied a team record for goals by a defenseman. Bogosian first played in an international tournament when he joined the American national team at the 2009 IIHF World Championship.
