Haweswater & The Old Corpse Road // The Lake District
Filmed on Saturday 5th September 2020
This walk took us through some of the most beautiful and wild landscapes in the whole of the Lake District. Starting the walk on the shores of Haweswater, Finn and I walked along the Old Corpse Road - a path used in a bygone era to carry the dead village folk of Mardale Green over to Shap Abbey - and then up onto Selside Pike and Branstree. A quick drop down to Gatescarth Pass and we were soon at the summit of Harter Fell with stunning views west, across the Lakeland Fells. We then leisurely strolled down to Nan Bield Pass where we chose to head down to Small Water; enjoying the waterfalls along the way.

In the ever-busy lives we live, there's a Hotel in the heart of the lake district on a dead end road to nowhere and that can be a special thing to find these days. RSPB Haweswater - Lee Schofield On Fighting For Nature On A Lake District Hill Farm
In 2015, England's last golden eagle died in an unmarked spot among the remote eastern fells of the Lake District. It was a sad day for the nation's wildlife, but efforts to fight for nature, to restore and preserve this landscape have already begun.
‘Wild Fell’ by RSPB Haweswater Site Manager Lee Schofield, tells this story and is a call to recognise the solutions for a nature rich world.

Ashden Awards: Wild Haweswater, rewilding in the Lake District
Meet Wild Haweswater – winner of the 2024 Ashden Award for Nature Based Solutions.
The Wild Haweswater project shows how restoring landscapes can tackle extreme weather threats while creating new, sustainable jobs.
Run by wildlife charity RSPB and water firm United Utilities, the scheme is nourishing damaged hillsides, waterways and peatlands in the Lake District. Before work began, the Haweswater site was struggling to slow the flow of water downstream – while damage to peatland left it emitting CO2, rather than capturing it.
The project has ‘rewiggled’ Haweswater’s rivers and connected them to local floodplains, so that water stays upstream for longer. Over 200,000 trees have been planted, and peat bogs restored. Livestock grazing has been reduced. The scheme has created jobs and...

Lake District Walks | A Circuit of Haweswater - flooded Mardale, Withnail and I film location
On a gloriously sunny day in mid-November 2023, Neil visits the epic Haweswater Reservoir, to the west of the Lake District. There, he explores the beautiful autumnal scenery and dark past of a vanished community - uprooted by the flooding of their homes in 1935, and finds the location of an iconic scene from Withnail and I (Dir. The tree he refers to is not, as he guesses, a spruce, but a larch - one the few deciduous conifers.

The scheme has created jobs and opportunities in sustainable farming and tourism. Local wildlife – from tree pipits to Atlantic Salmon – is benefiting too.
