Sintra has become a major tourist attraction, with many day-trippers visiting from nearby Lisbon. Attractions include the fabulous Pena Palace(19th c.) and the Castelo dos Mouros (reconstructed 19th c.) with a breath-taking view of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, and the summer residence of the kings of Portugal Palácio Nacional de Sintra (largely 15th/16th c.), in the town itself. The Sintra Mountain Range, one of the largest parks in the Lisbon area, (Serra de Sintra) is also a major tourist attraction.

Sintra (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈsĩtɾɐ]) is a town within the municipality of Sintra in the Grande Lisboa subregion (Lisbon Region) of Portugal. Owing to its 19th century Romantic architecture and landscapes, becoming a major tourist centre, visited by many day-trippers who travel from the urbanized suburbs and capital of Lisbon.
In addition to the Sintra Mountains and Sintra-Cascais Nature Park, the parishes of the town of Sintra are dotted by royal retreats, estates, castles and buildings from the 8th-9th century, in addition to many buildings completed between the 15th and 19th century, including the Castelo dos Mouros, the Pena National Palace and the Sintra National Palace, resulting in its classification by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1995.
The earliest documents describe a built-up town in the 11th century by the Arab geographer Al-Bacr (who was later supported by the poets Luís de Camões and Lord Byron). The Moors built their castle atop a nearby promontory around the 8th-9th century. When Afonso Henriques finally captured Sintra (after the fall of Lisbon) in 1147, he ordered the construction of the Church of São Pedro de Canaferrim, within the castle walls.

King Joao The First ordered construction of the Palacio Nacional De Sintra on the foundations of a Moorish construction that dated back to the 10th century. From the palace there's a beautiful view across the Vila Velha, Sintra's old town. The Palacio Nacional De Sintra consists of a variety of architectural styles that include Moorish, Gothic and Manuelistic design. 530 metres above sea level, on the summit of the Sintra Mountains, the spectacular Palacio Nacional De Pena overlooks the town. At first sight its towers resemble minarets, a symbol of a courageous and successful combination of numerous architectural traditions. Three kilometres from the castle is the oldest building in Sintra, the towers and walls of a Moorish castle, the Castelo Dos Mouros. The thousand year old ruins are famous for their breathtaking views that extend for several kilometres across the landscape and even as far as the Atlantic Ocean. In 1147, King Alfonso and his army conquered the old fortress. Sintra's gardens are the most beautiful in Europe and due to the region's unique climate, subtropical plants flourish in the fertile volcanic earth close to the Atlantic Ocean. Beneath the southern sun, Sintra's historic architecture continues to blend harmoniously with the glorious splendour of Nature.

Er wurde vom portugiesischen Titularkönig Ferdinand II. ab 1840 auf den Resten eines Klosters als Sommerresidenz für die Königsfamilie errichtet. Ferdinand war mit Maria II. aus dem Hause Braganza verheiratet. Unweigerlich fühlt man sich an Schloss Neuschwanstein in Bayern erinnert, obwohl dieses erst später erbaut wurde. Das Schloss ist vollständig eingerichtet und kann besichtigt werden. Der Palacio Nacional da Pena ist auf der Liste der UNESCO Weltkulturerbe.
Ca. 5 km südwestlich liegt das Convento dos Capuchos Sintra, ein ehemaliges Kapuzinerkloster. Das Kloster liegt tief im Wald des Nationalparks Sintra-Cascais. Die Mönche lebten unter spartanischen Verhältnissen in zum Teil in Felsen gehauenen Zellen, von denen einige mit Kork verkleidet waren.

Ferdinand was married to Mary II out of the House of Braganza. Inevitably one feels reminded of Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, although this was built later. The palace is fully furnished and can be visited.
The Pena National Palace belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Approx. 5 km south west lies the Convent of the Frairs Minor Capuchin (Convento dos Capuchos), a former Capuchin monastery. The monastery is located deep in the woods of the National Park Sintra-Cascais. The monks lived under Spartan conditions in cells partly carved into rocks. Some of the cells were paneled with cork.
