Drama Bites - Butterfly and the Blackdog - Interview
Here we have a small highlights package and a interview with some of the students that were involved in "Butterfly and the Blackdog" a recent show held by the Dramatic Arts department of the Australian Institute of Music.
The Butterfly And The Black Dog is a symphonic theatrical experience, which delves into the mind of one of modern literature's greatest minds, Virginia Woolf. Built as a sonata and taking place over three acts, the piece grapples with the works and life of Virginia Woolf and questions whether Virginia's final act was motivated by a stand against her illness or if it was, in fact, the ultimate escape.
"Captivating, confronting, moving and entertaining. My own students talked non-stop about them on our return journey, and in this morning's lesson the discussion continued." (Marnie Engel, NSW Drama Teacher)

Incorporating elements of an acting course, this degree extends the mainstream acting school approach to education with diverse, unique professional training both as an individual and an ensemble member.
Students learn the multiple skills required for an independent career in the performing arts. Based in Sydney, this theatre course provides professional training by nurturing the talent, technique & temperament of the performer, creator, actor & producer both as individuals & ensemble members. Much more than an acting school, students learn to embrace the multiple skills required for an independent career in the performing arts.
Major Studies
Performance Skills
Acting engages the senses, intellect, body and voice with a collaborative process of linear work on text and a personal connection with imagined circumstances. Improvisation unleashes instinct, focuses energy, develops spontaneity, and encourages invention. Voice offers ongoing technique for a free and flexible speaking instrument. Movement focuses on alignment, observation and adjustment, and includes combat, clowning and Asian theatre.
Performance Practice
Public and in-house performances are scheduled each trimester. The Discovery Play and Devised Work are early explorations of a full-length script and a new piece of physical theatre. The Contemporary Text is the first season of public performances, followed by the challenge of a Classic Text. Final year students develop New Short Works and take roles onstage and off in the Graduating Company Production.
Repertoire
Performance knowledge and acting skill are applied in a weekly Master Class. Explore ancient Storytelling, scenes from Australian Plays, landmarks of British and American Drama, translations from European and Asian Theatre, and Classics from across the world stage. Each student rehearses and presents scenes twice per trimester, and all second year students are assigned to direct a scene.
Contextual Studies
A lecture series offering current research tools for theatre, film, and contemporary performance. Discover how writers for stage and screen shape a story; explore the cultural diversity of storytelling; examine the roles of the writer, adaptor and translator; consider how performance research informs acting for stage and screen; and access trade secrets and networking opportunities in weekly sessions with industry guests.
