Sex is up, fertility rate is down in US
Sex is one of America's favorite past times, but fewer Americans are dealing with 18 years of consequences from participating in the horizontal tango. In 2012, the fertility rate in the US (or the number of births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44) fell to a record low for the second year in a row to 63 births, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. RT's Ameera David talks to Andrew Foster, director of the Population Studies and Training Center at Brown University, about the causes of a falling birth rate and its economic impact on the US. Singapore's Total Fertility Rate up to 1 29 in 2012 - 26Sep2013
SINGAPORE: Singapore's Total Fertility Rate (TFR) increased from 1.20 in 2011 to 1.29 in 2012. This is according to the Population in Brief Report 2013 released by the National Population and Talent Division in the Prime Minister's Office. The improvement in TFR was seen across all ethnic groups, with Chinese experiencing the largest increase. The TFR for Malays continued to be the highest among the major ethnic groups. However, the overall TFR has remained below the replacement level of 2.1 for more than three decades. The report stressed that efforts must be continued to provide a supportive environment for Singaporean to achieve their aspirations of getting married and having children. Singapore's total population grew by 1.6 per cent last year. This is the slowest growth rate in the last nine years. As of end-June 2013, Singapore's total population was 5.40 million. Singapore citizens made up 3.31 million while there were 0.53 million permanent residents. Non-residents comprising work pass holders, dependents, and international students numbered 1.55 million -- The report noted that growth in the non-resident population slowed. There was also slower growth in foreign employment due to tightened foreign manpower policies and weaker economic conditions. Growth in foreign employment (excluding foreign domestic workers) in the non-construction sectors halved to 3.5 per cent compared to 7.1 per cent the year before. The report noted that foreign employment growth was mainly driven by the construction sector to support the major ongoing infrastructure developments in housing and transport. Singapore's citizen population continues to age -- the proportion of those aged 65 years and above increased from 7.8 per cent in 2002 in 11.7 per cent in 2013. The median age of the citizen population rose from 35.3 years in 2002 to 40.0 years in 2013. There are fewer working-age adults to each citizen above the age of 65 -- for each citizen aged 65 years and above, there are 5.5 citizens in the working-age band of 20-64 years. This is a sharp decline from 8.4 in 2000. More Singaporeans are also getting married -- the number of marriages involving at least one citizen increased to 23,192 in 2012 from 22,712 in 2011. The report added that over the last five years, there were 20,000 new citizens. New citizens are drawn from the pool of existing Permanent Residents (PRs). Since the tightening of the immigration framework in late 2009, the number of PRs has decreased from an average of 58,000 a year from 2004 to 2008 to about 30,000 new PRs a year in the last three years. www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/singapore-s-total/827740.html- published: 26 Sep 2013

Visualizing How a Population Reaches 7 Billion
It was just over two centuries ago that the global population was 1 billion — in 1804. But better medicine and improved agriculture resulted in higher life expectancy for children, dramatically increasing the world population.
As higher standards of living and better health care are reaching more parts of the world, the rates of fertility — and population growth — have started to slow down, though the population will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.
U.N. forecasts suggest the world population could hit a peak of 10.1 billion by 2100 before beginning to decline. But exact numbers are hard to come by — just small variations in fertility rates could mean a population of 15 billion by the end of the century.

Crowded Healing
Manila is one of the most densely populated spots on earth. Shortcomings in housing and land use planning combined with a high fertility rate have left Manila in a state where the city literally appears to be bursting at the seams.
Makati City’s South Cemetery was home to dozens of families until, following a recent crime series, authorities evicted the entire living population of the cemetery. Only some of them have found shelter in nearby buildings. How do they adapt to the life “outside”, as the cemetery dwellers refer to the world beyond the graveyard’s walls? Adrian, 11, has been living in the South Cemetery for the past two years and is trying to make a living for him and his father in the streets of Makati. Without his mother and school education, Adrian needs to grow up fast.
Struck by the same fate are Julie and Primo and their three children, former cemetery-dwellers who make a modest living as parking assistants at a local churchyard. Basically living on the streets, they face a constant struggle of keeping their young family intact and healthy.
Health is a consistent problem among the urban poor in the overpopulated areas. In overpopulation hotspots such as Baseco or Tondo, the urban poor flock to faith healers to help them with their ailments and even births as they cannot afford the treatment in the metropolis’ hospitals. Taking the viewer from the business district Makati to Manila’s suburbs Tondo and Baseco, the film concludes by portraying two faith healers and their patients. The residents of these areas see faith healers more as general practitioners, rather than visiting them for their ascribed mystical powers. This is largely because free health care is almost impossible to come by, and faith healers, as opposed to hospitals, work on the basis of voluntary donations.

Nostalgia
"What if.... guerrilla marketing moves form the city to the suburbs"? It shifts the focus to the unsexy suburbs where there's still enough breeding ground for experiments!
Europe is balancing on the edge of an uncertain future. Changing fertility rates, the process of urbanization and the current financial crisis are strong forces we have to cope with. These circumstances call for Europe-wide action that would not only challenge the top down practices driven by the governments and markets, but that would also propose institutional innovations for deepening democratic governance and increasing social equity.
In the context of CULBURB- cultural* acupuncture*treatment*for*suburbs-, organised by the Centre for Central European Architecture in Prague (CCEA) ,the NGO Onorthodox, tackling urban issues, presents ‘Nostalgia’.
Their bottom up approach in combination with active participation and empowerment was selected to be realized on the tri point area of Austria, Hungary and Slovakia.
While this area is largely affected by suburbanization, Onorthodox aims to expose the almost forgotten past and raise the awareness of citizens and local authorities. The process of suburbanization slowly makes borders blur and weakens social ties. This made Onorthodox curious to seek the existing social relations within this geographical area. What are the common roots and how can stories from the past tell us?
Onorthodox decided to give the floor to ‘the most experienced ones’. About 75 elderly participants (re)told their stories by means of photos about the former days to Onorthodox and their fellow participants. Now it is about time to combine and show these photos and stories of the three villages (and countries). All these individual pieces of the past merge into a collective memory.

DEMOGRAPHIC WINTER: DECLINE OF THE HUMAN FAMILY
(USA, 2007, 52')
One of the most ominous events of modern history is quietly unfolding. Social scientists and economists agree - we are headed toward a demographic winter which threatens to have catastrophic social and economic consequences. The effects will be severe and long lasting and are already becoming manifest in much of Europe.
A groundbreaking film, Demographic Winter: Decline of the Human Family, reveals in chilling soberness how societies with diminished family influence are now grimly seen as being in social and economic jeopardy.
Demographic Winter draws upon experts from all around the world - demographers, economists, sociologists, psychologists, civic and religious leaders, parliamentarians and diplomats. Together, they reveal the dangers facing society and the worlds economies, dangers far more imminent than global warming and at least as severe. These experts will discuss how:
The population bomb not only did not have the predicted consequences, but almost all of the developed countries of the world are now experiencing fertility rates far below replacement levels. Birthrates have fallen so low that even immigration cannot replace declining populations, and this migration is sapping strength from developing countries, the fertility rates for many of which are now falling at a faster pace than did those of the developed countries.
The economies of the world will continue to contract as the human capital spoken of by Nobel Prize winning economist Gary Becker, diminishes. The engines of commerce will be strained as the workers of today fail to replace themselves and are burdened by the responsibility to support an aging population.
