One of the deceased was located near a gun and ammunition but that person has not been identified as a shooter. Three people have been killed in a shooting at Columbia Mall in Howard County, Md., police confirmed. The suspect was among those found dead. His body was located near a gun and ammunition, police said. Three witnesses described the gun as a shotgun, though police have not yet confirmed the weapon used. The scene is now secure, though police are asking shoppers who took shelter in the mall to wait for police to evacuate them. No other information has been released about the other victims. The initial call that shots had been fired at the mall came in at about 11:15 a.m., Howard County police said. Police then entered the mall. News4 spoke to one man who said he was in phone contact with his daughter, who was taking shelter in a Bank of America inside the mall, along with dozens of others. She described a chaotic scene as shoppers at the mall were told to evacuate or shelter. "People were panicking," the man said. A statement from the mall said only that "Mall is closed. Believe that the situation may be over, but the mall is closed." The mall is popular with shoppers throughout a large area of suburban Washington, D.C.

News Conference 1/26/2014: Police say shooter at a #Maryland mall yesterday was 19-year-old Darion Marcus Aguilar Police find explosives on body of Columbia mall gunman Crude' homemade fireworks devices found on unidentified shooter's body as mall remains closed for continuing investigation (Guardian) Police investigating a shooting at a Maryland mall which left three people dead said on Saturday night that they had found explosives on the body of the shooter. A news release said police found and disabled "two crude devices that appeared to be an attempt at making explosives using fireworks". Police searched the Mall in Columbia, which is close to Baltimore and Washington DC, with dogs overnight, which is standard procedure, and the mall was to remain closed Sunday. At an afternoon news conference Howard County police chief William J McMahon said authorities had difficulty identifying the gunman, who had used a shotgun, because of concerns he was carrying explosives and were proceeding with an "abundance of caution". By late Saturday, police said they had tentatively identified the gunman but declined to release his name while they followed up on leads. Police identified the victims as 21-year-old Brianna Benlolo and 25-year-old Tyler Johnson. Both worked at Zumiez, a store selling skateboarding apparel and equipment. Benlolo's grandfather, John Feins, said in a telephone interview from Florida that his granddaughter had a two-year-old son and that the job at Zumiez was her first since she went back to work after her son's birth. "She was all excited because she was the manager there," he said. He said he had spoken with his daughter, Brianna's mother, earlier in the day, but didn't know who the gunman was or whether the person knew his granddaughter. "It's senseless. It's totally, totally senseless," he said. He described his daughter's family as a military family that had moved frequently and had been in Colorado before moving to Maryland about two years ago. He said his granddaughter was on good terms with her son's father, and they shared custody. "I mean what can you say? You go to work and make a dollar and you got some idiot coming in and blowing people away," he said. The chief executive of Zumiez, Rick Brooks, released a statement that the company is making counseling available for employees in the area. "The Zumiez team is a tight knit community and all of our hearts go out to Brianna and Tyler's families," he wrote. Howard County General Hospital said it had treated and released five patients. One patient had a gunshot wound, while at least three other patients sustained other injuries.
