How Sustainable Development Can Lead to Economic Growth: Finland, Indonesia, and Mexico (2011)
How Sustainable Development Can Lead to Economic Growth: Finland, Indonesia, and Mexico (2011)
Economic growth is the increase in the amount of the goods and services produced by an economy over time. It is conventionally measured as the percent rate of increase in real gross domestic product, or real GDP.[1] Growth is usually calculated in real terms -- i.e., inflation-adjusted terms -- to eliminate the distorting effect of inflation on the price of goods produced. In economics, "economic growth" or "economic growth theory" typically refers to growth of potential output, i.e., production at "full employment". As an area of study, economic growth is generally distinguished from development economics. The former is primarily the study of how countries can advance their economies. The latter is the study of the economic aspects of the development process in low-income countries. See also Economic development. Since economic growth is measured as the annual percent change of gross domestic product (GDP), it has all the advantages and drawbacks of that measure. Happiness has been shown to increase with a higher GDP per capita, at least up to a level of $15,000 per person.[55] Economic growth has the indirect potential to alleviate poverty, as a result of a simultaneous increase in employment opportunities and increase labour productivity.[56] A study by researchers at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) of 24 countries that experienced growth found that in 18 cases, poverty was alleviated.[56] However, employment is no guarantee of escaping poverty, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimates that as many as 40% of workers as poor, not earning enough to keep their families above the $2 a day poverty line.[56] For instance, in India most of the chronically poor are wage earners in formal employment, because their jobs are insecure and low paid and offer no chance to accumulate wealth to avoid risks.[56] This appears to be the result of a negative relationship between employment creation and increased productivity, when a simultaneous positive increase is required to reduced poverty. According to the UNRISD, increasing labour productivity appears to have a negative impact on job creation: in the 1960s, a 1% increase in output per worker was associated with a reduction in employment growth of 0.07%, by the first decade of this century the same productivity increase implies reduced employment growth by 0.54%.[56] Increases in employment without increases in productivity leads to a rise in the number of working poor, which is why some experts are now promoting the creation of "quality" and not "quantity" in labour market policies.[56] This approach does highlight how higher productivity has helped reduce poverty in East Asia, but the negative impact is beginning to show.[56] In Vietnam, for example, employment growth has slowed while productivity growth has continued.[56] Furthermore, productivity increases do not always lead to increased wages, as can be seen in the United States, where the gap between productivity and wages has been rising since the 1980s.[56] The ODI study showed that other sectors were just as important in reducing unemployment, as manufacturing.[56] The services sector is most effective at translating productivity growth into employment growth. Agriculture provides a safety net for jobs and economic buffer when other sectors are struggling.[56] This study suggests a more nuanced understanding of economic growth and quality of life and poverty alleviation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_growth- published: 21 Aug 2013

European forestry innovation: charting a path towards a green economy
This film highlights how Finland is setting an example in sustainable forest management and how the many and varied innovations emerging from Finland's forestry sector can help, not only Finland, but the rest of Europe, in achieving the goal of greening their economies. Wood, unlike fossil fuels, is a renewable resource, because trees regrow as the result of seed sowing, replanting and natural regeneration. Finland's work in developing innovative wood products, is demonstrating how wood can be used as a greener option not only in traditional industries such as construction and pulp and paper production but in fields as broad as energy, pharmaceuticals and medicine.- published: 09 Dec 2013

Alternative Economy Cultures part 1
The ‘Alternative Economy Cultures’ (alt.econ.cult) programme on April 3rd & 5th, brought together leading international and Finnish thinkers, cultural practitioners and activists, to present alternative economic visions, during Pixelache Helsinki Festival 2009.
The seminar aimed to tackle not just the financial, but the social, cultural, institutional, human, material, emotional and intellectual forms of capital. Not just about individual gain, boosting, balancing or bail-outs, but common good, peer-to-peer, shared wealth and appropriate reward for effort involved.
The discussion-based workshop about peer-fundraising brought together artists, researchers and business representatives interested in P2P funding models. Focusing upon emerging practices and related topics, it also raised the topic: Can the crowd-sourcing phenomena be applied to support alternative cultural events in Finland?
The programme was initiated and organised by artist-researcher Andrew Gryf Paterson (independent / http://www.agryfp.info / Medialab TaiK), in cooperation with Marita Muukkonen & Ivor Stodolsky of Perpetuum Mobilε (http://www.perpetualmobile.org) and Roope Mokka of Demos Helsinki (http://www.demos.fi). We aimed to offer a new strand to the Pixelache Network discourse.

Creating Innovators: Web Trailer
http://creatinginnovators.com
In this groundbreaking book, education expert Tony Wagner provides a powerful rationale for developing an innovation-driven economy. He identifies a pattern in the lives of young innovators — a childhood of creative play leads to deep-seated interests, which in adolescence and adulthood blossom into a deeper purpose for career and life goals. Play, passion, and purpose: these are the forces that drive young innovators.
More than a book about innovation, Creating Innovators pioneers an entirely new reading experience. Noted filmmaker Bob Compton, who teamed up with Tony to make the movie "The Finland Phenomenon," has produced more than 60 original videos that expand on key ideas and passages in the book through interviews with young innovators, their parents, teachers and mentors.

Special lecture by Helsinki Design Lab’s DAN HILL
Dark Matter & Trojan Horses:
How might we use design strategically, to build better cities – and societies – by redesigning our cultures of decision-making?
Date: Tuesday 27 March
Venue: Prince Philip Theatre, Architecture Building, University of Melbourne
Designer and urbanist, Dan Hill has been leading the way in information and communication technologies since the early 1990s. Throughout a career focused on integrating design, technology, cities and people, Dan has been responsible for shaping many innovative, popular and critically acclaimed products, services and strategies including the iPlayer.
He currently works for Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund, in their Strategic Design Unit in Helsinki, exploring how design might enable systemic change throughout society, particularly in the context of governance, cities and sustainability. Prior to Sitra, Dan was an Associate at Arup in Sydney, Web & Broadcast Director for Monocle, Head of Interactive Technology & Design for the BBC, and he also writes for City of Sound & Domus, amongst others.
In this special public lecture, Dan will discuss the work of Sitra's Strategic Design Unit in Finland, describing this new and potentially valuable design practice through an emerging vocabulary, as well as outlining the role of a sovereign fund as a strategic delivery platform.
Strategic design is focused on the systemic redesign of cultures of decision-making at the individual and institutional levels, and particularly as applied to what we can think of as the primary problems of the 21st century: healthcare, education, climate change and resilience, urbanisation, social mobility and equality, immigration and diversity, democratic representation and so on. It helps government leaders see the "architecture of problems" and uses aspects of design practice to prototype and steward solutions in these areas.
Dan will discuss the Helsinki Design Lab Studio Model and other initiatives including Low2No, a programme designed to help transition cities to a low carbon future by balancing economy, ecology and society through strategic investments and interventions in the built environment (though on the face of it, it looks like a building).
Dan will also discuss Sitra's recent work regarding street food, which tries to understand the city through the lens of food, which describes the city's approach to public space, cultural diversity, health, regulation and governance, habits and rituals, logistics and waste, and more. Dan will also talk about Sitra's work developing platforms for decision-making at the community level - the Brickstarter project.
Formerly based in Sydney as an Associate at Arup, Dan has worked extensively on urban projects both within Australia and internationally, and is well-placed to connect these issues for a Melbourne audience.

Nokia is deeply rooted in the Finnish psyche, a source of pride from how it boosted the economy. Now Europe's last big handset maker has been delivered into American ownership and Finland's Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade told euronews of the national mood. Alexander Stubb said: "The personal reaction, probably of every Finn who has grown up with a Nokia in their pocket is a little bit emotional. I, of course, belong to that generation; I had the first huge mobile phones which were like bricks, so we have an emotional attachment, because it is also linked to the modern success story of Finland; we grew out of being a top 30 to a top three country with Nokia in the 1990s and 2000s. Having said that I always see the silver lining in every cloud and the positive side. "Now we have two enormous IT giants in Finland, one being Microsoft and the other being Nokia, over half of its business is still left [in Finland]. "Our IT hub for Europe is going to be Finland, for now and for the forseeable future. It's a marriage of two giants, and I think something good will come out of it." Nokia's fate serves as a warning for other consumer electronics giants. At its peak the symbol of Nordic entrepreneurial engineering prowess and design accounted for 40 percent of the world's mobile phone sales, a fifth of Finland's exports, and one-third of its home country's research and development spending But its abrupt fall symbolised the sector's breakneck speed and unforgiving competition. Nimble rivals can quickly upset established industry leaders and Nokia was not nimble enough, for example failing to bring to the market the touch-screen handsets it pioneered three years before the iPhone.
